    How many migrant encounters are there at the southern border?

    While border encounters occur all over the country, including via sea and air in states without international land borders, 81.3% of encounters from October 2020 to June 2024 occurred along the US-Mexico land border.

    I would assume that the vast majority of illegal immigrants cross the southern border and that is why it gets talked about the most.   I'm not editorializing or giving an opinion, except that I'm not surprised at all that folks on here don't acknowledge that the vast majority of crossings are on the south border when they talk about how racist it is to focus on the south border.  This board is made up of extreme posters who leave no room for conversation or nuanced debate.

    and in that time after a surge they had fallen to below historic levels. once biden had that app created allowing folks who wanted asylum to remain in place or get to mexico and apply from there , crossing dropped dramatically. what do you think happens now that the current admin has deleted that app and left all kinds of folks following the new rules hanging especially thos ewaiting for their apppointment to apply legaly from outside our borders?

    if as fuckstick says we are such a failing miserable country why in the fuck would anyone want to come here?

    Your assumption about the vast majority isn’t correct. Many enter legally and then overstay their visa. I think I saw a 40% estimate

    Agreed.  I did a Google search and looked at various sources that show that the percentage of illegal immigrants that come over the U.S./Mexican border runs between 37% and 45%.  Hardly a vast majority. 

    As for extreme posters, bootlegger10, well, yeah, we have a few MAGAs here.

    It’s also increasing in the number of posters whose posts consist largely of whining about nuanced debate. 

    Simply not true. If you pay attention, most reasonable posters acknowledge a problem at the southern border. However, it’s a carefully balanced line, as it is also used constantly as a racist dog whistle by their leader. 

    People call out racism when they see border misinformation/disinformation based on the lies told by trump/fox/etc.

    AND its fully within the scope of both chambers to come up with a reasonable plan that both sides might not be 100% fully behind but both can live with to get us moving in the right direction. One that allows for reasonable immigration in general , addresses the backlog of asylum cases with room for other new asylum cases and also addresses security concerns. in balance.
    Immigrants are incredibly hard working folks as a general rule. opening and maintaining small businesses, buying homes etc. same for the undocumented. the volume of hard goods purchased as well as general consumables, I'd wager the economy takes a significantly impactful hit just on goods purchases much less the production side.

    Seem to recall one such plan here recently. oh thats right. tell ya what, how about we reintroduce the agreed uppon bill NOW and see where it goes?
