A video circulating on social media shows Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), saying “there’s no reason to be walking around with a mask.” Fauci’s remarks were made on March 8, 2020 and do not represent his current stance on face coverings nor the updated guidance issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In the clip, Dr Fauci says “There’s no reason to be walking around with a mask. When you’re in the middle of an outbreak, wearing a mask might make people feel a little bit better and it might even block a droplet, but it’s not providing the perfect protection that people think that it is. And, often, there are unintended consequences — people keep fiddling with the mask and they keep touching their face.”

Fauci made this comment on an interview with 60 Minutes on March 8, during the early stages of the novel coronavirus outbreak in the United States. A longer extract of the interview is visible  youtu.be/PRa6t_e7dgI  (see 30-second mark).   

The interview predates the CDC’s updated guidance on the use of face coverings. On April 3, 2020, the CDC updated its previous advice and recommended people wear cloth face coverings “in public settings when around people outside their household, especially when social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.”

I don’t know about evil intent. Just a consequential statement from someone who should have known better. Or was there a smoking gun study that was conducted between 3/8/20 and 4/3/20 that led to a complete 180 in his understanding of the effectiveness of masks? If the goal was to save supply for front line workers then maybe he should of just said it, trying to back track his statement with that after the fact is chicken shit. That or he truly learned more in those 4 weeks than he had in his previous half century. Which seems more plausible?

Or maybe he wanted to be consistent with Administration messaging and not contradict the Orange Menace, having realized adults needed to stick around and try to prevent even more damage by a clueless POTUS who admitted, on the record and on tape, that he knew how deadly and contagious the virus was but consistently and repeatedly lied to the American public, with far more impactful and deadly outcomes?

Almost 2 years on, who should replace Dr. Ouchie? 

This scenario would lesson his credibility more than the two I proposed, imo. If he was ignoring the facts in an attempt to please trump then I’d say someone with a spine would be a good replacement. I expect a little more integrity coming from his position, if this was the case.

Was there anyone with a spine in the POOTWH Administration? Hell, the repub party certainly doesn’t have a spine. All in all, in the totality of Dr. Ouchie’s service during the pandemic, is it fair, to be faaaaaaaaair, to judge him on one statement during the time and in the context of what we know now about the virusssss and the POOTWH Administration? Remember, this was a POTUS and an Administration that prided itself on its narcissism and turning conventional wisdom  upside down before throwing it out the window, spitting on it and stomping on it, before taking a shit on it and lighting it on fire.

Or is it as simple as Dr. Ouchie owns the cons and POOTWH’ers?

I expect very little from any politician, you should know that. I place more importance on those whose position doesn’t aim to appeal to only a portion of the population.

I’m not sure you understand executive branch executive functioning nor the difference between black and white and shades of gray.

Who hired Dr. Ouchie to serve in the capacity that he did for POOTWH? Why aren’t you blaming them for their obviously poor hiring decision?

I never said he was a poor decision or has done a bad job. The fact is he made a statement and it backfired, even after he changed his tune. Once the anti-mask crowd adopted it, the damage was done. If you don’t think it mattered or played a role, that’s fine, but there is this groovy new social media fad that is rotting peoples minds and it seems things travel very fast on it. Oh, and apparently everything you see on there is true!

If the message had been masks help, but we need to save them for healthcare workers, does anyone believe the public would have heeded that request? Hell no. I hate that we were lied to but just imagine the panic buying, or attempting to buy masks and then the ensuing freaking out about not being able to find them. Pure chaos. this is why, if it was a lie, it doesn't bother me. as much as I hate that our society has to play by the rules of the stupidest, selfish people, I completely understood why they lied. because, as the toilet paper fiasco of 2020 showed us, a global health crisis doesn't bring out the kumbaya in many people. 

It bothers me greatly.  Give us the truth, we can handle the truth.  Doing this has compromised everything they have said and done since making it a lot worse.  

You can control that very differently....you don;t allow the N95's into the marketplace...which is what they did anyhow.

About the effectiveness of masks. Pretty simple. I’m in the business. N95 masks were out of stock in mid January. Hardware stores in NYC were being cleared out and sent to family in China. I had to stop selling them and save them for actual construction and demolition. 

 I know how stupid people are. Just look at the TP situation. But either way , a lie is a lie. And now that lie is hypothetically being blamed on Trump. It’s just so weird to me.

Trump is being blamed on these boards. I’m not providing a link for Faucis statement on masks at the start of the pandemic. I’m sure you can find it. It was posted here as well. And here we go with the what about. So I can’t call out Fauci without calling out Trump? How many anti Trump posts do I have to post before I can critique someone like Fauci, or AOC? And yea I remember what a trump said. And? Do you remember what Biden said? About a president having that many people die during their presidency? That they shouldn’t be president anymore? We can do this all day. It’s a waste of time. All these people say stupid shit and never own up to it.

While Fauci, along with several other US health leaders, initially advised people not to wear masks, Fauci later said that he was concerned that there wouldn’t be enough protective equipment for health care workers. This was also early in the pandemic before public health experts fully knew how contagious the disease was and how it spread.

Fauci explained that at that time, “we were not aware that 40 to 45% of people were asymptomatic, nor were we aware that a substantial proportion of people who get infected get infected from people who are without symptoms. That makes it overwhelmingly important for everyone to wear a mask.”  
“So when people say, ‘Well, why did you change your stance? And why are you emphasizing masks so much now when back then you didn't -- and in fact you even said you shouldn't because there was a shortage of masks?’ Well the data now are very, very clear,” he said.    
“We need to put that nonsense behind us about ‘well, they keep changing their minds,’ ” Fauci said.    
As to Fauci’s other comments, while he occasionally sought to reassure Americans in the very early days of the virus, he consistently advised to follow CDC guidelines and that things could change.

What exactly didn’t I back up? By not doing a google search for you? A lie is a lie. Some agree with the reasoning. Others don’t. What is it to you? Does everyone need to share your opinion on it? Your post proves absolutely nothing. And doesn’t address any of my prior post. At all.
