    What a braggart.
I honestly think Canadians are super jealous of the us since all you do is ridicule and complain about it.
you honestly believe that? that we are jealous of the US? of what exactly? our cultures are incredibly similar, except for the political divisiveness and the violence.

is it not allowed to be outraged and baffled at the senseless violence towards other humans and shake our collective heads at why the leaders of your country refuse to address it? THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS. I guess if it doesn't happen in canada, we aren't allowed to react to it.

unfortunately, I've been noticing a bleed towards the north of the political divisiveness. I hope it doesn't get worse.
I don't know what you guys are jealous at but it is a constant bombardment on how bad the US is.  It gets old.  And it just isn't gun violence it is everything.  Our election process, how we eat, how fat we are, how are pizza is inferior, etc.
most threads about these topics are started by AMERICANS. are we not allowed to comment? the vast majority of posters here are AMERICANS. why are some focusing on the canadians?

when a thread is started, and titled, "is america the greatest country in the world?" are you expecting just a bunch of patriots to sit around in a circle jerk praising the virtues of america the beautiful? or do you welcome honest discussion?

I don't know about the pizza. I guess I haven't travelled enough in the US to notice a difference. I always thought many american cities were famous for their pizza (chicago, NY, etc).

there's a canadian political thread.  you are welcome to join any time you wish. say what you want. but my guess is you won't. because from what I've seen, the only things americans on this board (think they) know about canada is moose, syrup, hockey, and how we apparently (but don't) say aboot.
Stop lying, I know plenty of Canadians that say “aboot” and ride a moose to every hockey game!  Fucking hosers!

In fairness to the White House, they didn't doctor the video. Their press secretary shared it from the twitter account of a conspiracy theorist who works for info wars.

What is a "country" and what is "greatest"?

If a country is a land mass and greatest is a quality, then yes, America is right up there.  We have a marvelous diversity of landscape that includes several marvels from the massive wall of granite known as El Capitan in Yosemite to the dramatic layered rock of Badlands South Dakota to the sheer beauty of Maine's Acadia Nation Park.   The list could go on and on.

If a country is a national group of people and greatest is a quantity, we might be seen as lacking a bit.  For all our wealth, our educational system is not nearly as successful as it could be.  We don't have the greatest number of people but we used and abuse the greatest quantity of natural resources and energy.  Our potential is huge and yet our wisdom in applying that potential is often lacking and seems to be waning.

In other words, we could be viewed as both the best and the worst.
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
Variously credited to Mark Twain or Edward Abbey.

This reminds me of the inevitable comments from women who act like total cows going around accusing all other women of being jealous, when is fact all other women just can't stand her because of her rotten personality. Suggesting we're jealous is just dumb. What we are is concerned and frustrated. Americans keep forgetting just how much what happens in America affects us. It affects us A LOT! They also tend to underestimate just how connected we are to and how knowledgeable we are about America and what goes on there. I know it's not at all a two-way street, so maybe that's hard to understand from your perspective?
Come on McGruff. Think about the thread topics. The Canadians here are just as on topic and their opinions are just as relevant as anyone else's. If there was a thread about "Things that are great about America" I'm sure we'd have plenty to say about that too. But all the threads are about Trump, American politics, American violence and crime... Of COURSE we've got a lot of bad shit to say when those are the subjects at hand. If you don't think that's reasonable maybe you need a reality check.

Yeah, everyone already knows those things. Do you think it changes anything? And are you really quoting Trump's shithole remark? Anyway, if it makes you feel better to compare America to third world and totalitarian nations, then have at it, and rest easy. I guess I'm glad you're very proud of you country for not being a total shithole. I'm very glad it's not too.

FWIW, I often dreamed of living in New York or Washington - so much about part of America appealed to me (and still do for the same reasons). But then the GOP went crazy and gets worse everyday, the biggest piece of shit asshole motherfucker within its borders was elected to desecrate the White House and crap all over environmental protections, all the racists started crawling out of the woodwork as their leader emboldened them, the free press started being threatened on a constant basis, xenophobia and racist propaganda became a government mandate, the government started lying about, well, literally everything, abortion rights came under real threat, and the country's gun fetish was freshly highlighted. That's when the idea of living there became a non-option, at least until it works its shit out.

A lot of people would think the opposite - the smaller the better. An overpopulated place isn't generally appealing.... But yes, the richest nation in the world manages to handle its too-large population much better than the other nations with far less wealth. That is true.

it doesn't. when the US falls behind, miserably, the apologists use their go-to "but we need to compare like-populations!".

the point is simple... managing large populations and maintaining a high quality of life is nearly impossible on planet earth... especially a country as diverse as America... look at the list of most the populated countries, it speaks for itself... a country this large is going to have problems, but compared to other countries our size we are a fucking utopia... poor people have I-Phones and air conditioning in this country for Christ's sake... that's amazing for a country this size

big picture, America is fucking amazing really

you say richest nation like that is a bad thing... did that happen by accident? did America just wake up an economic superpower? did someone hand it to us? you think your comfy way of life isn't in part because you have the USA as your southern neighbor and #1 trading partner? get real

by the way... notice something about #9 Japan and #20 Germany.... the only other large nations I would consider upper echelon places to live on the list... American involvement, rebuilding, and support since WW2 ring any bells?

    not coincidence

How did you get that I said it as a bad thing?
And no, it sure didn't happen by accident, lol. My goodness, do you really want to get into a conversation about how America accumulated all its wealth and power throughout its history?
Okay man, I'm not sure what you're driving at here, lol. If you want us to bow down to America as though its out lord and saviour, it ain't happening. But rest assured that we know exactly how America benefits us, exactly how it harms us, exactly what it's done for and against us over time, and that is probably why we actually give a shit. Again, you fail to acknowledge that the reason we are so into the issue of America's problems right now is because we care about America, and about how America impacts us. You really don't seem to get that. You seem to think we're all just a bunch of bullies who want to pick on someone for shits and giggles. Or out of jealously, apparently, lol. It's a pretty immature perspective. Like, literally the kind of reasoning you find on a a playground.

"America is really amazing as long as you ignore all these other countries that are much better"

    What a stupid argument.

We're behind every other modern industrialized country on every quality of living metric.

America is the shittiest house on the nicest block.

the point is simple. you massively benefit from having us as your neighbor and major trading partner, no? you need us a lot more than we need you, whether you like it or not
