TORONTO (AP)—Red Sox right-hander Josh Beckett won’t be facing the New York Yankees on Tuesday after skipping a bullpen session Saturday because of continued numbness and tingling in his pitching arm.

Manager Terry Francona said Beckett has “inflammation” in his elbow and likely won’t start again until next Friday, when the Red Sox return home to open a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox.

Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, out since Aug. 7 with tightness behind his right shoulder, threw in the bullpen Saturday and will come off the disabled list to start Tuesday when the Red Sox begin their final regular-season series at Yankee Stadium. Wakefield is 7-8 with a 3.67 ERA in 23 starts.

Beckett, who took Thursday off, threw in the outfield for the second straight day Saturday and won’t throw off a mound until Tuesday. He said the decision to push his start back was made after he felt numbness and tingling in his hand again Friday.

“It’s gotten better,” he said. “We had the one day (Friday) where it kind of came back. That’s why we decided to do what we did. It has gotten better. The treatment and stuff is definitely working.”

Francona intends to be “overly cautious” with Beckett, who is 11-9 with a 4.34 ERA in 23 starts.

“We’re talking about a guy’s pitching arm,” Francona said. “Let’s make sure it’s perfect.”

Beckett first reported numbness and tingling in his right hand after sleeping on his arm the night before his latest start, Aug. 17, when he gave up eight runs and eight hits in 2 1-3 innings in a 15-4 loss to Toronto. He’s now sleeping with a special sleeve to prevent a recurrence of the problem.

“It’s like a cast,” Beckett said. “So we’re dealing with that, too. The doctors say it’s going to help, so we’re going with it.”

Concerned that taking Thursday off may have contributed to the numbness returning, Beckett intends to do light throwing every day.

“I think that was part of the problem yesterday, having that whole day off and not doing any treatments,” he said.

Beckett didn’t mind not pitching in what could be Boston’s final visit to Yankee Stadium.

“There’s a last time for everything,” he said. “This didn’t happen to be it.”

Yeah I honestly don't know what's up with that. I can see not scoring against our bullpen, but Listch is kind of hit or miss.

Thats cool FLA's not bad esp during the winter so I dont blame ya..went to my 1st Panthers game when I was still down there with my friend from Buffalo who's a Sabres fan and my cuz and godmother on Thanksgiving..against the Rangers. Let me tell you..it was like 60% Rangers fans and 40% Cat fans...seemed like all the NY'ers visitiing for the holidays wnet to the game..felt like I was @ msg and was even going at it with 2 Puddy Tat fans next to me like.."YEA...SIT DOWN!" after the Rangers tied it to go to OT..MAD shit talking all game..homegirl thought I was gonna get into a fight for sure! lmao!! We lost in a shootout tho so they got at me and I told em yea..ok..MAKE THE PLAYOFFS scrubs!! hahahah
anyways, I was out all day, just got back...heard the yanks won..what happened with the Sox and TB?

edit-been meaning to tell you, love the Michael Franti part of your sig..used to listen to Spearhead back in Greece alot and here also a bit ;)

Oh man NOW you've moved up to the Ultra MEGA Cool Dude.

Michael is a dear friend of mine and we hang out all the time when he's either in Florida or DC or anywhere else in the world, he even came to my birthday party 2 years ago. Had the best time with him in London though walking the streets at 1am in Camden singing the Clash song *Straight To Hell* then we went clubbing in SOHO at Club 13 He has a new album coming 9/9/08 called *Rebel Rockers*

Back to baseball it appears the Red Sox are getting smashed today and I can't go up to Camden Yards to see the Yankees play the O's I'm stuck here at work all weekend. :(

Same with the Bruins/Panthers game in February and the best hockey game I've seen live. I think it was 4-3 Bruins in OT and mostly Bruins fans in the house too. The Cats got hot after that game and almost made the playoffs.

Forgive Yankee fans for the diversion from your team. :)

    Peace people

so what's the word on Burnett up there? Do you expect him to opt out? You guys need one or 2 more bats, and you'd be really dangerous

It seems like he wants to stay, but with the money he's gonna get I wouldn't blame him for leaving. Hopefully we can go on a Colorado type run while we still have him.

alright, all the bitching put aside.

how many innings is pavano going to last tonight before his arm detaches from the socket and goes flying in the air towards pudge?

dude, it's common knowledge, and widely reported that one of the reasons they finally had enough of him, and traded him, was that he faked a knee injury to get out of facing Felix Hernandez and Joba. When they sent him for the MRI, the idiot didn't know which knee hurt, so they MRI'ed both. Both came back clean. But don't let facts get in the way of a good argument. As we all know, facts, and the truth, have a well known Yankee bias.

Since I enjoy these discussions we have here, you and would hate to see you get banned, you should probably cut the name calling out. I mean seriously, and I've asked before based on some of your posts----are you 12?

you really wanna go there when one of your fellow Sox fans recently skulled a guy with an aluminum bat for the high crime of having a NY license plate? Perhaps we agree that violence over what team you root for is stupid, regardless of which side starts it. Unless you think every single Yankee fan would run over a rEd Sox fan if he saw them, and that it's okay for Sox fans to walk up to anyone with a NY plate and take batting practice on their head?

    From the Chicago Tribune
    DOUBLE TAKE

Red Sox nation not Yankee fan-friendlyJuly 8, 2008
A man was ordered held without bail Monday in Falmouth, Mass., for allegedly beating a New York man with a baseball bat because he thought the man was a Yankees fan. As it turned out, the New Yorker allegedly beaten in the land of the Red Sox isn't even a big baseball fan.

Police say Robert Correia, 20, and others spotted a car with New York license plates leaving a fireworks display Friday. The group approached the car and began yelling about the Yankees and proceeded to attack him and vandalize his car, according to police.

The victim, William Nestor, 29, of Northport, N.Y., said his family was traveling in two cars and stuck in heavy traffic after the fireworks on Cape Cod when he was attacked.

"When they saw the plates, they came at me," Nestor told the newspaper.

Nestor said he's not a particularly big baseball fan and didn't know the Red Sox were playing the rival Yankees over the weekend. He was treated and released from Falmouth Hospital.

Correia pleaded not guilty to charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and malicious damage to a motor vehicle.

you mean like when the Yankees signed Jose Contreras, and Theo destroyed a hotel room? When Theo booked every room in the hotel besides the one Contreras himself was staying in, to keep the Yankees away? Yup, he signed with the Yankees anyway

didn't pitch great, but good enough. pitched into and out of some trouble.

P.S. Sorry to anyone bothered by my jousting with fairweather Red Sox fans. I'm sure it's useless and annoying to anyone who just wants to talk Yankee Baseball.

pavano def. labored, but pitched well enough to give the yanks a chance to win, and i guess that is all you can really ask of him.

i am looking forward to his next start.

Man, the Angels are really hurting the Yankees. First they beat us like nothing. Then lose to teams in front of us in the standings. They lose 2 of 3 to Tampa. Then the first 2 games against the Twins. And now are in the verge of blowing a 6-1 lead. Now 6-5.

that reminded of the joke about Randy Johnson being the Ultimate Yankee killer:
He killed them when he was a Mariner
He killed them when he was a DBack
And most of all, he killed them when he was a Yankee

nice. Hopefully Toronto stays hot tomorrow. Matsuwalksalotofguys vs. Burnett. And the Yankees finally hit Cabrera. hasn't been a problem for the rest of baseball.

Then we get to the main event

    Pettitte vs. Wakefield
Ponson vs. Byrd (oooof, should be a slugfest, unless Byrd has been to his dentist for some HGH lately)
    Mussina vs. Lester

I like Pettitte over Wakefield, and Mussina over Lester. The middle game though, who knows.
