  • oh, and PS:
WMA sounded awesome!! The drums at the beginning were haunting and the only version better is probably the Atlanta Fox Theatre 4/3/94 with King's X version. IMO....

Check out 2/18/95 in Sendai, Japan. Awesome. I think it's the last time the "original" version was played until last night.

99 Problems has always been one of those difficult to argue for/against because the lyrics can be "read" as if Jay-Z is happy with his woman, because she doesn't cause "girl problems". In other words she's there for him as a partner in life, and that's one thing he doesn't have to worry about. At the same time what are "girl problems", and is any girl who causes said problems a bitch? Who defines this?

If you read "Decoded" by Jay Z (must read IMO) you'd know EXACTLY what this song means...
If you ever saw the video you'd know EXACTLY what this this song means...
It's a police dog reference in addition to racist cops and rap critics...a PERFECT interlude into/from WMA (again, imo)
I can't help but dribble pee laughing hystercially reading RW81233's "description" or "interpretation for him" -- now I know where Eddie Murphy, Jamie Foxx & Dave Chappelle get the inspiration of the "white voice" in their comic stylings...
My cousin went last night and said it was the coolest festival he'd been a part of and he thought Eddie was really into performing with Jay Z...can't WAIT for this boot!
Glad you all had a blast "Hail Hail" (I refer to the lucky ones)
Clearly i haven't read the book. I was more pointing out that the song has different readings than the authors intent by different people reading it. As Pearl Jam fans don't we celebrate the fact that we've re-read Alive and made it "our" song? Isn't that what happened with Green Day's Wake Me Up When September Ends? Further i wasn't the one who brought up the idea that it was a "slap in the face to women". For those of us who hadn't seen the video it's not that far of a reach to "read" it differently than it's original intent. Now that I know the background a bit more it makes a ton of sense for W.M.A. and makes it even cooler.
  • It was terrible not being there so I guess having the wife there on the rail was the next best thing!

  • One of the best nights of my life. Got there early, I was right in front of Mike, one person behind the rail, but it was as good as the rail considering I got to look between the two people in front of me, also considering how tightly packed we were. It was amazing. Being so close makes you fall in love all over again. Stood for 11 hours with no food, no bathroom, very little water, and a bunch of rain but it was all so totally worth it. Got to meet Ron Howard and shake his hand, also had to sign a release to be in his film. I was jumping and dancing like an idiot, and several times Ron tapped the cameraman and had him film me! Got to meet him during the encore break, very down to earth. He geeked out when Mike threw him a pick and totally lost it when Ed gave him his wine bottle! Amazing show. Best rendition of Black I ever heard--- Mike's solo killed it and I don't know what Ed was saying at the end but it was intense. LOVED it when Jay-Z came out!! I'm so sore today from all the standing around and jumping during the show but it was all totally worth it to be so close. Thank you PJ!!!!

Was in line to enter at 11:45 and sprinted to the gate mikes side when it opened and didn't move all day. Run DMC was awesome but pearl jam was totally worth the sore legs today. Got o e of mikes pics, tons of energy, good setlist, WMA was great and it was pretty cool to see the, with Jay-Z

Couple cool things to mention, during alive (or maybe RITFW) Eddie came off stage and was splashing wine on the crowd, he ten corked it and walked down and handed it to Ron Howard who looked quite speechless, pretty amazing. Also, before they came on the head security guy called a little meeting right in front of us and told all the guys - if Eddie comes off stage let him go, don't touch him, dont help him, if he goes into the crowd he will ask for help if he needs it, just let him do his thing. I though that was hilarious. Also before Drake they took down the huge dolly camera rig that rolled back and forth in front of the stage. We asked them why (even tho we were quite thankful they did) and they said Pear Ja, doesn't want it up because they don't want it obstructing any fans view. How cool is that? Great night.

Hey, are you the guy with your dad that I was with before gates opened? Had a good day with you if it was you... great fun time. After making jokes about Drake during his set, when he made a joke about me was a highlight for me. I never thought that Drake would have a bigger laugh at me than I had at him, making a poke at me and my meaty man boobs  hanging out of my tank top  Great time during PJ seen them a ton and was disappointed at the Greatest hits set, but still had a blast! WMA > 99 Probs > RITFW was worth the whole day! Ed slipping all over from his intake of wine and the stage's intake of rain was great too. Thought it was awesome how after Reign O'er Me it started to rain, as if the Gods answered Ed's calls. Then again, I always considered PJ shows to be the closest thing to Church that I ever get to see ;)

This was an incredible vibe and I was lucky to share the show with some great guys from Atlanta as well as the infamous PJEV2003 who I remembered from the "2004 Reading PA incident," but was one of the coolest guys I have ever rocked out with during a show.

Sharing a show with Jason (PJEV2003) is always fun. Been to a bunch of shows with him in the past. Was texting throughout the day but my phone died before he got there :( .

I've seen a few shows, one being the last night at the Spectrum (and that was very special), but I've never seen energy like this. Now mind you, I was not around for the early shows(I was 11 when Ten was released), but last night was really incredible for all of us. It was fast and hard and I completely enjoyed it- smile on my face a mile wide. I had never been to a PJ festival show and I liked how it was different from the normal PJ shows (which I live for). I like my rarities and non-mainstream songs just as much as the next dedicated fan, but I enjoyed last night's set list thoroughly! The guys were having fun and that was so great to see- so many smiles! WMA was a huge highlight for me, and I hadn't heard Know Your Right's live before. I just can't convey the energy that I felt. I have felt 'at one' with the band and the crowd before, of course, PJ always makes that kind of connection, but I found myself rocking out with everyone else and thinking: This feels like Christmas and every single 'alive' feeling I have ever felt in my life, all rolled into one. It was a great night and I am so grateful to have been able to experience it. I love this band....I love this feeling.....Thank you Pearl Jam- you guys ROCK!!!!

Completely agree, man. I am completely overwhelmed by what I experienced last night. Having trouble processing it. You are right about the energy. The show rivaled all of the ones I have been to, including the Gorge and PJ20 shows. It is difficult to even put into words.

Hey Dimitri, thanks for the link. The key phrase here is "job creators" - which is not mentioned in the original comments. I was about to make some sniding remark about export/import, the international market, international financial crisis, interdependency etc. - for I thought the remarks, as written down, were a bit chauvinistic from Ed, but I now I get the meaning / drift.

In the end though PJ did get invited by Jay-Z and they were probably going to let him pick whatever he wanted to do - it was pretty interesting and fun nonetheless.

The song is about a police dog, tho.

MUCH more energy last night compared to PJ20 and the one Gorge show I went to and the Philly shows and anything else I've ever seen. They knew they wanted to stick to hours and they intended to absolutely destroy the audience during those 2 hours. So happy I made the trip.

Yesterday was just so, so special. I don't even know where to begin! Our original plan was to see Santigold-The Hives-Gary Clark Jr-Run DMC-PJ. Got there around 2 and went to the front of the GA part on Mike's side to say hello to a friend who got there early and was on the rail, right in front of Ed where the GA barrier made a right angle. Once we saw we were standing right next to him and the stage was RIGHT THERE, we said screw it, we're staying. Only 1 person to my right, only 2 people in front of me separated me from the stage. Incredible. So then came the wait! Santigold was fantastic, Jill Scott had a nice voice but not my cup of tea, Run DMC ROCKED!, Drake was...well...Drake (not a fan), and then, what I came there for...PJ!!!!!!

My 10c number is really high (447xxx) and I am NOT a fan of GA, so I decided being close was just something I'd HAVE to do, as I may never be that close again. When the music started and Go began, I knew it was on! What a rush. I don't even know how to type out my feelings right now...hadn't seen a PJ show since my first 2 and only PJ shows, the MSG's in 2010. Immediately the feeling of 'this is the best feeling in the world' came back. I screamed, I jumped, I sang my lungs out, I almost cried, I could go on.... But that feeling...man, it makes you feel like anything is possible, as cliche as that sounds. Highlights were: WMA/99 Problems (HOLY EFFING CRAP that was one of the most awesome things I have ever, ever seen!), Save You, Black, Given to Fly, Know Your Rights, RITFW, Unemployable, Nothingman, Betterman. Hell, the whole show!! For a festival, was very happy with the set. The friend I took to the show with me really enjoyed, too, which was fantastic!!

I can't believe it's over. I want more! I want that feeling again. It was really amazing to hear some of the songs I heard in 2010 again, as what I have been through since then makes some of the songs so much more meaningful. I feel so grateful to have been a part of it, and so grateful to be up close.

I know I'm biased, but this band is the best band ever. Thank you more than you ever know, Pearl Jam! :D

p.s. saw matt cameron at the liberty bell earlier today, did a quick handshake as he was w/the fam. too funny as i saw his son eyeing my pj20 shirt a little earlier on the street then saw MC smiling. cool dude...

  • We came all the way from Cape Town to see PJ at a festival. And what a festival it was. The show was amazing - loved Nothing Man and w.m.a
Just wanted to say a special thank you to all the Pearl Jam fans who made the trip so special for us - from the awesome pre-party at the Public House, to the ones waiting outside of the 4 Seasons and the philly PJ fans dancing with us in the back.

Loved it. Definitely worth the 17 hours flying time.

I had a great two days in Phila. (Only one at the festival though)..

I guess I'll start by saying that I thought the festival was set up really well, but if I never see another 24 ounce Budweiser Can for the rest of my life I will be very happy. Beer selection sucked but the food selection was pretty decent.

    Sets that I caught:
    - The Hives rocked pretty hard, I was impressed. The all played in Tuxedos. The lead singer was pretty entertaining (joking around), especially when he had everyone in the crowd sit or kneel during "Tick Tick Boom" and then ran up the center of the audience and everybody jumped up.

    - Santigold had me tapping my feet and moving a little bit; and she is gorgeous

    - Gary Clark Jr. was really impressive, I'll have to pick up his album when it comes out.

    - Run DMC was just a hits kind of set, King of Rock, Tricky, Walk This Way.. pretty enjoyable, and I'm happy I got to see them, because I couldn't imagine a setting other than a fest where I would get a chance to.
At one point during Run DMC's set, Beyonce and Jay Z walked within 10 feet or so of me with a huge group in tow.

    - Drake, not really my scene at all, was what I expected. It seemed like there were times during his set where he should have been singing, or pretending to sing into the mic, but was dancing around instead. With that being said, he was really complimentary of PJ and mentioned them throughout his set. He said something to the effect of "you have no idea how honored I am to open for one of the greatest bands in the world.. pearl jam".. so i thought that was cool..

    Finally.. Pearl Jam
    - Hard, hard rocking set. Mostly hits (like we were all expecting). I'm not a huge fan of "Go" as an opener, would prefer something that builds up a little tension.. Release, Long Road, Wash.. but if the opener is any indication of what the band would do.. It was "GO!".. I thought the first set had a great flow, fast and hard.., with the exception being Unemployable, I thought it slowed the pace down a little bit to much. Always nice to hear "Know Your Rights" in there.. just such a rocking tune.. Second set, Love Reign O'er Me sounded fucking HUGE... and of course WMA/ 99 Problems was a once in a lifetime thing, so it was great to see.. RITFW great festival closer...

    - Thought Mike was shot out of a cannon as usual.. just on fire. Ed, and the rest had an unbelievable amount of energy, jumping, running, and moving around. Ed had some trouble with lyrics throughout the show, but I guess being such an isolated show, that is to be expected and adds to the charm. I don't know what he was doing towards the end of the show, if he was running around and jumping over shit and falling, or sliding, but it seemed like there were 4 or 5 times when they hit him with the camera and he was down on the stage...

    Additional Notes/ Ideas:

    1. When did college kids start dressing like the guys from LMFAO? Matching fluorescent hat, tank top, and socks.. what is that?

    2. If you are at a General Admission rock show, someone might bump into you when they are dancing or moving to the music, I'm not saying running you over or pushing you around, but you might get touched. Not everyone is going to stand like a statue.. SO put your fucking elbows down..

    3. I would recommend everyone goes to: a) Tony Luke's on Oregon Ave. for a Roast Pork Sandwich with Broccoli Rabe and Sharp Provolone (I heard John's Roast Pork is better, they were closed by the time I got there though) b) POPE (Pub on Passyunk East) and have a beer.. nice atmosphere c) South Philly Taproom.. great beer and great food..

Hope everyone had a nice time.. I know I did..

    Peace
I'm gone ..Long gone..This time I'm letting go of it all...So long...Cause this time I'm gone

It was mentioned before that it was too "mainstream" which i understand, but knocked out a few other songs off my list like Save You, Unemployable, and Comatose. Picked up a poster and a few stickers. Also Met some great people at the pre-party at Public House :) Also we all knew Jay-Z was performing with PJ. Wasn't expecting 99 problems, but i think it worked out good.

few other things I would like to mention. Gary Clark Jr. was great (even saw Jay-Z & Beyonce in the white tent next to the stage dancing to his music  ). Run DMC i enjoyed a lot but wish they would have played other stuff besides the "hits". Also during the performance Jay-Z and Beyonce and the film crew rushed by us and they were watching the performance from the statue. It was cool to see Jam Master Jay's sons following in his dads footsteps. :) Didn't care for Drake at all. YOu could tell who was there to see him and who was there to see PJ  Also that was the closest i've seen Pearl Jam (one good thing about festivals ;) ) so that was cool also.

I thought the second day went by smoother than the first. First day they barely patted people down or checked bags and the concession stands were a mess. Second day went way better I thought. There was probably less people the second day as well.

One of the best nights of my life. Thank you PJ!!!!

nice review! i was about 15 yards directly behind you. posted earlier that my faves were know your rights and WMA/99 but thinking back now, unemployable w/ed's intro was right up there. always has/always will remind me of a bruce song. now off to bruce (philly 2) where EV will be tonight :o:o:o

p.s. saw matt cameron at the liberty bell earlier today, did a quick handshake as he was w/the fam. too funny as i saw his son eyeing my pj20 shirt a little earlier on the street then saw MC smiling. cool dude...

That's cool that you met Matt! My buddy saw him at a pizza joint in berlin, said a quick hollo but didn't want to bother him cause he was with his fam. Dude and I'm jealous that you get to see Ed with Bruce tonight! That's 2 great shows back to back.. Enjoy!

  • fucking awesome. not the most insane setlist but who cares. being a part of that festival for two days and having pj close it was epic. energy was phenomenal. seeing them at a festival was very different but really cool. as if playing the original wma wasn't incredible enough, when jay-z came out i nearly shit. my life is complete. my favorite rapper and favorite band together on stage. i've dreamed of days of these types of musics respecting each other, more specifically pj supporting jay and vise versa. i've always felt my fav bands and fav rappers are from such different worlds and it really blows my mind when they (rarely) honor each other. this was the holy grail of music genre mash-up for me. and those of you concerned because it mentions "bitch" and things like that, honestly, get the FUCK over yourself. if you are that offended then you most likely are a bitch. listen to "bitches and sisters" by jay-z. he CLEARLY defines the difference.

awesome show. PLEASE do a full US tour this coming year.
