What a great show! It really was much better than I was expecting...the band sounded awesome--WMA and Nothingman were pleasant surprises :-) We had a great little group of fans on the rail to the far left, Mike's side, and I had a blast...no voice left, sore calves, and Mike and I both got picks,so that means it's a great night for me!!
Such a great show, and the band sounded amazing. Came down for the weekend with 5 of my friends, 3 of which never saw Pearl Jam. They were all blown away, the band had such great energy, and not sure how we're going to make it through the Springsteen show tonight because I heard he played almost 4 hours last night. Respect to Drake too for ending his set a little early to make sure PJ got the full 2 hours, he even said it was an honor opening for one of the greatest bands ever, which I thought was pretty cool of him. Thank you for another great show Pearl Jam!!!

I was on the rail that split the crowd in half ( pretty close up- got to main stage and stayed there at 2). Jay, Beyonce, and Ron Howard all walked right by me and I had something to lean on all day long . Plus didn't need to worry about someone getting in front of me. Amazing show. They killed it last night. I did however notice some odd ways to end the songs-like they were just a little bit off with timing at the end of a few of them. Probably because it's their first show in a month with (I think) just one rehearsal. Man these guys were amazing last night and I'm already itching for another show.
It's funny because I had a lot of friends who basically were there more for the first night and are just casual PJ fans at best...after the show I got about 3 or 4 texts since they all know I am a PJ degenerate and they all said something along the lines of, "PJ is clearly the best band I've ever seen live"
The band was on fire from the very beginning and did it right last night with opener GO!!
A few lyric flubs by EV but we are used to it by now.
I couldn't help but chuckle when EV talked about making more things here in the US as the Made in China jacket made it's short lived debut here on the "Shop". LOL.
Thank you so much PJ for returning to Philly. I needed it and you are truly THE FIXER. I have been down and frustrated, starting to lose some faith not seeing you as a full band since 2010 and Philly missing you since 2009 and this was the fix I needed. Every thought and doubt goes away when the guys are up on stage, leaving it all on there and pouring every fiber of their being into giving us fans the very best.
I would have loved a longer show and not under festival conditions but I'm not complaining. Hopefully just a prelude to PJ returning to Philly or Camden in 2013 with hopefully a new album to debut.
Thank you PJ, management, and all the amazing friends I got to see last night and spend some time with for another memory to keep for ever. I didn't get to see everyone I wanted to including my best friend and my sister, LOL, but there just wasn't enough time to do everything. Props as well to those who organized the MIA weekend. Nicely done!!
Great time yesterday! Festivals are a pain in the ass, but I ended up real close in a wild crowd. Really feeling like I got my ass kicked at this point.
Kind of wanted a slow traditional opener, but Go was kick ass and really got the energy going fast. Band came out like a house of fire! Really good versions of RVM, Jeremy, RITFW. WMA/BMA was really cool. The stacking of the hits kind of started getting old after a while. Also it was uncanny that they kept playing songs I already had, despite it only being my 3rd show  . Like the 2 Avocado songs, Comatose & Unemployable, are 2 of the 4 Avo songs I already had. Agree with someone else that the Backspacer songs (esp Fixer) kind of dragged it down a little.
Thanks to eeriepadave for the carpool (valet service). Nice to see pearlgirl2010, met zarrocat (sp?) at the preparty, met some other cool people.
Other acts I saw:
Gary Clark Jr (was his dad the Redskins WR???) was freaking awesome.
Run DMC was sweet. Didn't really know the backstory behind them, and it was cool their tribute to Jay.
Drake - well everyone seemed to really like him. He had some nice things to say about PJ, so that was cool.

Hell yeah! I gotta get on his side the next time.

Was in line to enter at 11:45 and sprinted to the gate mikes side when it opened and didn't move all day. Run DMC was awesome but pearl jam was totally worth the sore legs today. Got o e of mikes pics, tons of energy, good setlist, WMA was great and it was pretty cool to see the, with Jay-Z
Couple cool things to mention, during alive (or maybe RITFW) Eddie came off stage and was splashing wine on the crowd, he ten corked it and walked down and handed it to Ron Howard who looked quite speechless, pretty amazing. Also, before they came on the head security guy called a little meeting right in front of us and told all the guys - if Eddie comes off stage let him go, don't touch him, dont help him, if he goes into the crowd he will ask for help if he needs it, just let him do his thing. I though that was hilarious. Also before Drake they took down the huge dolly camera rig that rolled back and forth in front of the stage. We asked them why (even tho we were quite thankful they did) and they said Pear Ja, doesn't want it up because they don't want it obstructing any fans view. How cool is that? Great night.
oh, and PS:
WMA sounded awesome!! The drums at the beginning were haunting and the only version better is probably the Atlanta Fox Theatre 4/3/94 with King's X version. IMO....
Hit set, yes. I expected it and I was with a casual fan and was hoping for a large amount of hits for him. But, damn!!! As mentioned by a few, the band was on fire and wanted to be there. I for one had a great time and this will rank high on the list of PJ shows. Doesn' touch the Spectrum run, but what can.
The festival was set up way better than I imagined. Hats off to Philly and Jay-Z for pulling this off.
As for Jay-Z. Not a fan, I just can't get into that music. When he paired up with Linkin Park he seemed to only add a few "uh uh, yeah" through out songs. I was initially not in favor of him joining PJ on stage. Then WMA to follow Alive? I knew something was up, then Jay was on stage and I was thinking "I hope this goes well"
Wow!!! That was crazy and I enjoyed the hell out of Jay-Z's bit.
Great festival, great set, great finish.
The Hives, Run DMC were outstanding and to those on the boards who said to check out Gary Clark Jr....THANK YOU

Where do I start???? It was was 2 hours of pure bliss! Mike was beyond amazing, he was channeling something??? I don't know what but he killed and BLACK was beautiful. I was about 2 from the rail, just to the left of Mike and saw Ron Howard there the entire time, he even did his own camera work for the doc! I can't wait to see it! The stage was a great set up!
I've run out adjectives to describe last night's show already. I'm guessing this is some where around my 20+show, and only my second time w. GA. Randall's Island on the ticketmaster boycott tour in 96. Anyway, I enjoyed every single second of it, and thought Matt & Mike were on point. Eddie seemed a bit nervous, or was that just me?
Also, I did enjoy the Jay-z 99, but was sort of upset that they went with that song because of how supportive they are of women's right, and felt "bitch" was kind of a smack in the face.... but than again I can be pretty silly about that sort of stuff. It just is a wee bit hyporitical, and I'm nit picking.
Now, I'm sitting here with that sinking feeling you get after a PJ show, with no other possiblity of a show in the near future. Sigh......
McCready completely went nuts on the Black solo; more than usual!
This! Yes, it was a greatest hits sing-along, but as a Philly guy, seeing the band with the Art Museum in the background closing out a 2-day festival with an incredibly diverse list of bands and followers was amazing. This may have been the best, most epic version of Black I have seen live (nearing 40 shows) and has to be in the top 3 Blacks of all time.
This was an incredible vibe and I was lucky to share the show with some great guys from Atlanta as well as the infamous PJEV2003 who I remembered from the "2004 Reading PA incident," but was one of the coolest guys I have ever rocked out with during a show.
A breezy night, a light rain at times to cool off the dancing crowd, and a fired up PJ... Oh, and while waiting 6 hours to see them, you get to see The Hives, Gary Clark Jr, and X... that is a "day before Labor Day" I will take every year.
Crowd was very cool, no incidents/assholes that I could see... Philly did it up right!
37 PJ Shows, 3 EV Shows, 1134 Total Songs, 24 Different Openers, 9 Different Closers, 252 Unique Songs (never enough)
It's funny because I had a lot of friends who basically were there more for the first night and are just casual PJ fans at best...after the show I got about 3 or 4 texts since they all know I am a PJ degenerate and they all said something along the lines of, "PJ is clearly the best band I've ever seen live"
Speaks volumes.
Yes it was amazing how much of the younger not necessarily PJ fans stuck around and rocked their asses off. Such a great crowd and it seemed as if PJ had just as much fun; they were all into and feeling every song despite it being a kinda greatest hits set. I even enjoyed Even Flow, probably because Mike was in the zone all night.
Fastastic show. I was fortunate to make it to the 2nd row after getting in at 6:30pm (had a family gig before..). Made it up front with pjpitt89 and some other buddies and rocked along step by step with Mike all night. Was able to get one of Mike's pics, as did my 4 other buddies, which was one off the bucket list for sure. By farrr the closest I've been to the guys, so it will stay up their with the last night at the Spectrum for me!
Loved that Ed changed the words to "He made it to the City of Brotherly Love" in Given To Fly. I love when he puts those subtle changes to bring in the crowd. Ed took at least 3 falls on the stage that I caught - one was a pure slip, two others when he tried to jump off of something and just ate it hard. He got up and rocked on no problem, as always.
Mike threw two picks to Ron Howard, the first drilling him in the head, and the second one a much slower attempt that Ron caught. Mike starting laughing, pointing, and smiling when Ron caught the second one - pretty cool to see. Mike had an amazing solo at one point, I think Black, where he was curled up in a ball in front of us..got a great picture of that one.
All in all a fantastic night. Thanks for coming back to Philly - we love you guys.
I've seen a few shows, one being the last night at the Spectrum (and that was very special), but I've never seen energy like this. Now mind you, I was not around for the early shows(I was 11 when Ten was released), but last night was really incredible for all of us. It was fast and hard and I completely enjoyed it- smile on my face a mile wide. I had never been to a PJ festival show and I liked how it was different from the normal PJ shows (which I live for). I like my rarities and non-mainstream songs just as much as the next dedicated fan, but I enjoyed last night's set list thoroughly! The guys were having fun and that was so great to see- so many smiles! WMA was a huge highlight for me, and I hadn't heard Know Your Right's live before. I just can't convey the energy that I felt. I have felt 'at one' with the band and the crowd before, of course, PJ always makes that kind of connection, but I found myself rocking out with everyone else and thinking: This feels like Christmas and every single 'alive' feeling I have ever felt in my life, all rolled into one. It was a great night and I am so grateful to have been able to experience it. I love this band....I love this feeling.....Thank you Pearl Jam- you guys ROCK!!!!
99 Problems has always been one of those difficult to argue for/against because the lyrics can be "read" as if Jay-Z is happy with his woman, because she doesn't cause "girl problems". In other words she's there for him as a partner in life, and that's one thing he doesn't have to worry about. At the same time what are "girl problems", and is any girl who causes said problems a bitch? Who defines this? In the end though PJ did get invited by Jay-Z and they were probably going to let him pick whatever he wanted to do - it was pretty interesting and fun nonetheless.
I can't for the life of me understand everyone claiming this was a greatest hits set?! I have been seeing pj since 1992 and can safely say that 99 problems is not one of their greatest hits, neither is Comatose or Go or a full WMA nor is Unthought Known....so they played Alive, Even Flow, Daughter, Nothing Man etc..and no Crown of Thorns or Smile or Reach Down...they are in the music business. Have you ever seen such a diverse crowd at a PJ show? It was their chance to get turned onto PJ....do you maybe think Alive and Jeremy is a good start?
Know your rights and Unemployable in a set everyone is saying is a greatest hits set? C'mon, just because it was a a festival doesn't mean you have to get all Pavlov and start screaming greatest hits set.
Forget that a set list is a completely one dimensional way to rate a show. I have made the mistake of criticizing set lists before only to find out upon listening that energy levels, band tightness etc..are all part of the experience.
This was a very solid performance by a band that was hand picked by Jay-Z to represent America. Our homeboys were Made in Seattle and Montana and San Diego and I am glad they rocked the shit out of that festival last night. I loved it.
Very well said Kaluss and I totally agree with you. highlights for me was a rockin and heavy wma. Go was an absolute killer opener. Rvm had an intense jam in the middle. And Mikey s solo during black was insane. Ed s voice was strong and sounded fresh. Even stone was rocking out! Overall a great show; I can t wait for the next one. And jay z was phenomenal when he did 99 problems. Ed was completely focused when playing the song.

I noticed through the whole show from beginning to end that Stone was all over the place. I never saw him actually move around like that since videos from back in the day. A nice refresher from his boring shoulder shrug coupled with the "I think I just sharted" face.

If you read "Decoded" by Jay Z (must read IMO) you'd know EXACTLY what this song means...
If you ever saw the video you'd know EXACTLY what this this song means...
It's a police dog reference in addition to racist cops and rap critics...a PERFECT interlude into/from WMA (again, imo)
I can't help but dribble pee laughing hystercially reading RW81233's "description" or "interpretation for him" -- now I know where Eddie Murphy, Jamie Foxx & Dave Chappelle get the inspiration of the "white voice" in their comic stylings...
My cousin went last night and said it was the coolest festival he'd been a part of and he thought Eddie was really into performing with Jay Z...can't WAIT for this boot!
Glad you all had a blast "Hail Hail" (I refer to the lucky ones)
Did anyone record the full performance of W.M.A? I am so angry at myself for letting the opportunity slip, but I was just in awe that they were performing the song.

I loved it.
"I love reading that the band was on fire last night!!!"
The song is about a police dog, tho.

It was badass. It sounded incredible. Whoever came up with that thought of the perfect way to bring Jay onstage.
