  • I think it depends on how "school shootings" are defined. If I recall, some folks here were contesting the numbers because some of the incidents happened on school grounds after class hours or on the weekend. Classifying, compiling and keeping statistics on firearms and firearm health impacts is something the NRA vehemently opposes. Its a slippery slope to coming to take your guns away.

If you want to ban the ar-15 isn't that taking your guns away?
Ban future AR15s. No one's assault weapon was seized after the 10 year ban went into effect. Can't begin to address root causes of issues unless you fully understand the problem. But we all know what the problem is, not enough firearms, including assault weapons, in the hands of "responsible" gun owners.
As long as I can buy or sell an old one I don't have a problem w this.  I just want the right to own one.

Last time w the ban all it did was drive up prices for them.  They weren't cheap before either.
I don't think you have anything to worry about regarding access to firearms. There's plenty to go around and with 3D printing available and getting better, anyone will be able to make their own. Nobody is "coming to take your guns."
You don't understand gun laws then.  You can't just make your own gun legally.  You should have a class 3 machinists license then it has to be registered and have a serial number.  If I got caught w an unmarked gun I would be nailed w a felony.  I don't see why anyone would make one anyways?

I want to own something legally.

Also those 3d printed guns aren't up to snuff just yet.  You won't be taking out zee Germans with one any time soon but it could happen.
I didn’t say anything about it being legal or not, just that the capability exists. It’s another thing the NRA is against regulating because they think everyone Is “responsible” like you.

And ask the parents of the young woman killed with a 3D printed gun whether they’re effective or not or law enforcement agencies that are seeing more and more of them used in crimes. Like I said, in another way, your right to bear arms won’t be infringed.

Cant a “responsible” person buy a gun kit and associated parts individually and assemble a gun and not violate the law?
To your last part, no, yes, depends.  Can you do it?  Yes.  What kind of gun is it?  Are you building a Moissin Nigant or an Ar-15?  The AR you can not legally.  Those serial numbers mean something once you add a firing pin.  hand gun?  Absolute no no.

You can do these things yes but the ends don't justify the means if you get caught.  It's just not worth it.  I would talk to people about these things and always stated I wanted to be able to own a firearm legally.  Sawing off the barrel of a shot gun or making my own gun was never something that excited me because of the consequences.  Why do something illegally when u can do it legally.
Not illegal. Operative word is "sale." What was that about understanding firearm laws, again?

Federal law requires that a person or business engaged in the sale of firearms be licensed. A finished firearm bears a unique serial number and must be registered with local authorities. Additionally, a person buying a firearm must meet certain requirements (for example, not be a convicted felon) and submit to a background check before purchase. However, it is legal to make and own a firearm as long as it is intended for personal use only and the user does not intend to sell it. An individual need not obtain a license to make a firearm, nor must the gun be registered. (18 U.S.C. § 922 (d).) This includes firearms created with 3D printers, except in New Jersey and California, as discussed below.

I was one. I wouldn’t consider a shooting on school grounds on a Saturday morning at 2 AM among adults a school shooting. I even remember one event on the list was on a former closed down school.
I think even 5 school shootings is horrible, no need to inflate the numbers that create a side debate and distract.

If I have a hand gun, in any state without a serial number on it, I'm going to jail.  That is plain and simple.  I also said you could make one but if you get caught with it, it won't end well.  I don't know what that is that you cited but I would invite you to try it out and see what happens.  There is no way you get pulled over and have a 3D made gun and not be arrested.  No way in hell.
  • Also when I actually read the gun magazines no one ever promoted doing any of this as it usually leads to trouble somewhere in the future.  I have also lived in Cali and NY where they are strict.  No way I would make a firearm and try my luck with it and say "But it's legal",  F that.

That's you. That's different than saying its illegal, or in my case, saying it's not. My understanding is, is that its not illegal to 3D print a gun for your own possession and use. You are required to put a metal plate in it though as it can't be 100% plastic or undetectable. Plenty of people are promoting it. Currently a court injunction on the dissemination of blueprints for 3D printing of firearms. Gee, I wonder where the NRA sits on that one?

“Once those 3D-printed firearms are made, they're firearms,” Charlie Patterson, who is the new special agent in charge of the Washington Field Division for the ATF, said. “Those firearms are being recovered as we speak and are being used in violent crimes in cities.”

According to federal law, people who build their own firearms may use 3-D printing, as long as the firearm has some kind of material, like metal, making it "detectable." In order to sell them, you have to have a federal firearms license, authorities say.

It's not just federal authorities seeing 3D-printed weapons. The DC Department of Forensic Sciences released a photo of a 3D-printed gun frame police confiscated.

Yeah I have read about the metal plate and people trying to get all plastic ones on an airplane.

I still find it hard to believe that if you are found in say Texas, w one of these and the cops not bringing you in on SOMETHING.  A cop would not be doing their job.  I wouldn't test these waters of it being "for personal use" .  What the hell personal use does it have being in your vehicle?

See, it makes no sense at what is written as "legal".  What is personal use?  No way you get let off for wandering around w one of these.

This is a big ol can of worms waiting to be a precedent one day...

I didn't say anything about having a 3D printed gun in your vehicle, on your person walking around, etc. What is personal use? C'mon man? Now, other aspects of gun laws, in some states, may cover some of the scenarios you posit but the initial one that began this conversation does not.

Yeah, I still wouldn't try out the legality of it.  No friggin way.  It doesn't sit well, sound well or smell well.  Even if that article says it's legal.

It is legal to own them but not to sell them, as the article states.

I also have zero interest in building, assembling or owning one of those things. They seem to only serve a portion of the public who cannot legally own guns. The ability to make, or finish making a gun at home provides an end run around the laws that prevent criminals, domestic violence offenders etc. from obtaining guns through legal channels.

It wouldn't hurt my feelings one bit to see home made or 3D printed firearms banned. If anything, I suspect that they would continue to be used in crimes, therefore proving again that criminals don't care if something is illegal.
If hope can grow from dirt like me, it can be done. - EV

More details emerge about teen in Michigan school shooting
    By ED WHITE
    Yesterday

DETROIT (AP) — Two parents charged with their son in a Michigan school shooting failed to get their $500,000 bond reduced Friday, as prosecutors offered new allegations about the teen's hallucinations, passion for guns and boasts about violence.

James and Jennifer Crumbley, who are charged with involuntary manslaughter in the Oxford High School shooting, ignored numerous warning signs about Ethan Crumbley and instead bought him a gun that was used to kill four students and injure others on Nov. 30, assistant prosecutor Marc Keast told a judge.

In August, Ethan made a video with a different gun and told a friend in a message that it was “time to shoot up the school — jk, jk, jk,” Keast said, apparently a reference to “just kidding.”

The 15-year-old was fascinated with Nazi propaganda, even keeping a Nazi coin in plain view in his bedroom and drawing Nazi symbols in a notebook that was also used to make family grocery lists, Keast said.

Earlier in 2021, Ethan told his mother in text messages that he thought “there was a demon or a ghost or someone else inside the home,” the prosecutor said. “These weren’t one-time messages. He would repeatedly text what he was perceiving to his mother, who sometimes would not respond for hours."

Keast said the parents failed to intervene. He also said Ethan started seeing online ads about mental health after regularly searching for information about school shootings and guns.

“They did not schedule therapy,” Keast said. “Did not investigate what might be in his room, on his phone or on his (internet) browsers.”

What a great nation, ‘Murica. And “responsible.”

The sisters in Ohio, both in elementary school, were shot by their father. The boy in Texas was shot at home by someone in a passing a car. The ninth-grader in Arkansas was shot at school by a friend. The girl in Kansas was shot by a toddler, who didn’t mean to do it. The teenager in South Carolina shot himself, but he did mean to do it.

All of them were killed in an epidemic unique to the United States, where, on average, at least one child is shot every hour of every day. Many survive, but many others do not. In the nation’s capital, nine children were killed in gun homicides last year. In Los Angeles, 11 were fatally shot. In Philadelphia: 36. In Chicago: 59. Those figures don’t include the hundreds of other kids who died in accidental shootings and by suicide. Just how many were taken by gun violence last year will remain unknown until the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention releases its data months from now. But in 2020, the number exceeded 2,200 — by far the highest total in the past two decades — and 2021′s tally is expected to be worse.

Another “responsible” gun owner. Should she be allowed to keep her firearms?

Just before the Page County School Board voted Thursday night on whether to keep requiring masks in schools — as dozens of school districts throughout Virginia grappled this week with a hotly contested executive order from Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) declaring masks optional — parent Amelia King stepped to the microphone.

King said she had decided, against her normal custom, not to prepare a written statement for the evening’s public comment session, which was recorded on video and posted to YouTube. She warned that, “when I go off the cuff, I get really passionate.” Then she threatened the board with a promise to show up with guns if it did not make masking optional for the rural Virginia district of 3,000.
