Vaccines aren't the puzzle piece to this solution. How many people in the world saw this pandemic and decided to live a healthier life? We don't hear about that side of the pandemic at all. If you live an unhealthy lifestyle, your odds of getting even more sick go way up. How people stopped smoking due to the dangers presented by COVID? How many obese people saw that this disease really hits the obese people hard and have decided to lose weight? Living a healthier lifestyle would not only help with COVID, but with the healthcare costs in America as a whole.

I'm fully vaccinated and have been for some time. I do believe in the vaccine but there's so much more that we should be doing to protect everyone from COVID and everything else that doesn't get discussed. I see the government all day long pressuring everyone to take the vaccine but I don't see the government pressuring obese people to lose weight.
I recently worked on a report that contains a lot of this data. I can PM you a link of you like.

    Let me know.

I genuinely would like to see that if you have time.

Do you remember Michelle Obama being ridiculed for advocating for all of those things you mentioned? Do you remember her leading by example by planting a vegetable garden and speaking to the virtues of more kale in your diet? The ever present bowl of apples in the Oval? How about Bloomberg's soda tax? Remember that? Compared to POOTWH and his fast food celebrations with stacked boxes of crap hamburders? Universal Health Care is also a piece of the puzzle and we once had a POTUS who tried to get it done. I wonder when that cheaper, better version the repubs have had 11 years to introduce will come out?

The Health 202: You might have gained the 'covid-15,' but many didn't.

Often dubbed the “Covid-15” or the “2020-20,” pandemic-related weight gain has been a common complaint.

But a database of electronic medical records suggests the pandemic didn’t worsen the nation’s overweight and obesity problem, contrary to public perception.

Americans kept gaining weight last year, but not more than usual.

That’s according to an analysis of more than 19 million patient records stored by Epic Systems, one of the largest medical records companies in the United States. When researchers looked at Americans’ average weight gain in 2020, they found it was consistent with the previous three years.

The trend is this: Adults are gaining, on average, a little less than one pound a year. That held true in 2020, regardless of age or sex. When the pandemic started in March 2020, the patients averaged a little over 191 pounds. By the end of the year, they averaged nearly 192 pounds.

The patient records also showed that 35 percent of people lost weight during the pandemic, only a little less than the 39 percent of people who gained weight.

A handful of widely-cited surveys claimed the opposite — that weight gain did intensify.

In a March 2021 Gallup poll, 36 percent of Americans said their weight “got worse” during the pandemic.

Yet the survey relied on self-reported data, rather than measurements actually taken in a doctor’s office or hospital. And there can be some downsides from relying on how people perceive themselves.

“The actual numbers don’t necessarily jibe with people’s perception of what’s going on,” Epic’s Christopher Alban said. “People’s perceptions can vary.”

Even if it’s true the pandemic didn’t prompt weight gain, that’s hardly the only health indicator.

The unintended consequences of lockdowns — like the possibility that social isolation could lead to increased substance abuse or mental illness — have been hotly debated through the pandemic. It's something President Donald Trump warned even as he prematurely claimed the pandemic was almost over.

“People are dying the other way, too,” Trump argued in spring 2020. “When you look at what’s happened with drugs, it goes up. When you look at suicides, I mean, take a look at what’s going on. People are losing their jobs. We have to bring it back, and that’s what we’re doing.”

Canada currently has 48.45% fully vaccinated, 69.4% with at least one dose. Of entire population. Based on 12+ eligibility, the stats are 55.55% and 79.7% (about a 20% vaccine hesitancy).

United States is 48.4% fully vaccinated and 55.4% with at least one dose of entire population. It has 65% with at least one dose of the 12+ eligibility (about a 35% vaccine hesitancy).

Wasn't the base always around 35%? It is crazy to me how this can be politicized so much. I am proud of Canada for doing as well as we have done with the vaccine and I am proud of those in the US that can see through the bullshit and do whats right. That said I would never have guessed we would be 15% off from each other when close to the final numbers were in. Not a competition just a jarring number to me.

How are you not talking about how amazing it is that the deaths and hospitalizations have barely increased with all of these cases? Why are we always focusing on the negative? I get talking about the negative as that is important but where is the the positive talk as well. Look at your seven day average of daily deaths with 50K cases. There is 40. Now look what it was like when the last time you had 50K cases back in late December. The deaths were 500. That is over 10 times the deaths and hospitalizations are way down too. How is this not what you are talking about?

Look at this. How is this not a miracle that more are focusing on? Yes there is long covid yes it still sucks if you get it for some but the vaccine works. If this data is not enough for some to finally get the shot nothing will be. At this point for me case numbers are becoming less relevant and deaths/hospitalizations are what I will be focusing on going further. Notice the big uptick in deaths with cases last September? That is not even close to an uptick this time around.

Correct me if I’m wrong but from what I understand that if fully vaccinated and get Covid it resembles a cold in most cases.  Is this true.  Because I can deal with a cold.  What I hate most of all is hospitals…I really do.

All of what you say is correct, with qualifications. The data definitely look good in places that have a highish  rate of vaccination, which include Canada and the UK. Unfortunately, Rob is correct that covid is going to rip through the US again, or at least the large chunks that are under vaccinated. Deaths are already up 23% in the last week.

Globally, only 5 countries have 60% or higher of their total population fully vaccinated. That’s a sobering statistic for me. I am happy and grateful to live where I do, with its benefits of great vaccine availability and a mostly willing populace, and also worried for other areas.

It is not about him or I being correct over one another. We both can be. Its about the focus of talk constantly in the negative and nothing on the positive. I know that the low vaccinated states in the US are going to have a hard time this fall. That is inevitable.

You don’t think there has been focus on the amazing effects of the vaccines? I am not seeing that. I think there’s been more of a tendency to dismiss the ongoing impact of the pandemic now that the vaccines are making such an impact.

Yes a lot of good work has been done…I’m not sure there is a lot to be positive about in the bigger picture.  And Ontario’s CMO expects cases to rise in the fall and we are getting vaccinated here.  And to me, there is the unknown whether Covid causes long term effects 20 years down the road…so I prefer never to get it…

60% of people being admitted to UK hospitals had two COVID jabs - adviser

LONDON, July 19 (Reuters) - Britain's Chief Scientific Adviser Patrick Vallance said on Monday that 60% of people being admitted to hospital with COVID-19 have had two doses of vaccine.

"In terms of the number of people in hospital who've been double vaccinated, we know it's around 60% of the people being admitted to hospital with COVID," Vallance said.
