Epstein likes Werth alot and I assume Boston will be after him in the offseason but I don't see any reason to make that trade ever.
Papelbon has one year left in arbitration and I either see the Red Sox keeping him for one year or trading him in the offseason and making Bard the closer.
No way Epstein would take Lidge and 14 mil guaranteed plus whatever is owed this season onto the payroll. Epstein has the Billy Beane mentality where it's not prudent to overpay for a closer which is why I see Papelbon being traded this offseason.
The Sox have a lot of flexibility this offseason with only 100.5 million committed for next year. In contrast the Phils already have 134.7 million committed to next season.- Busted down the pretext

there's still over 2 months of baseball to be played and we're only a handful of games out of the playoffs right now with our best player not on the field.
gotta at least wait until we see what we do at the trade deadline before waiving the white flag...
I'm not saying it's over, but this team is frustrating. What pisses me off is their holier than thou attitude and general lack of emotion.
The wild card is gonna be next to impossible to win since cincy/STL play in that joke of a division. They will be playing pittsburgh, houston, chicago in sept. Barring injuries I think you can pencil those two teams into the playoffs right now. The phils need to catch atlanta. Not impossible, but it's never a good idea to give the team you're chasing a 6 game lead with only 2 months to go.0 -

I'm too lazy to look up the schedule, but don't they play them 6 times in the final 2 weeks of the season? Obviously don't want to be in a position to have to win all 6 of those games.0 -

Fixer, like I said, and trying to reiterate your comment that hopefully Amaro doesn't fuck this team up. Then, by that, I just hope he doesn't make any irrational decisions just to stay in the race this year. I don't think it's worth it. If it means trading Werth to make you stronger in 2011, by all means do it. Don't do it to try and tread water for two months. This team is spending a shit load, so it's comfortably easy to say - financially - this team will always be in the hunt. Just as long as that money isn't committed to the wrong players. And also by not pissing away anymore prospects on rentals - ie see Boston or St. Louis about teams who have gotten tremendous help from their farm system this season. I'm willing to sacrifice the rest of this year to be back on the horse next year, and the many more following.0

Not at all, man. Not to bring everything back to the Yankees but similar to what they did in 2008. It was tough to watch but they didn't press the panic button, trade away young pieces and missed the playoffs only to retool in the offseason and win it all. Everyone wanted them to make moves being the last season of the old stadium and all but they didn't and it worked out. I feel like the Phillies are in somewhat similar situation, minus about $60 mil in payroll.0 -

And I don't think it matters that they don't have that 60 mil. Personally, I don't want that 60 mil, nor do they need it since their core is already in order, but they have the financial freedom to make moves. They're just going to have problems, if they miss the playoffs, explaining to the public why ticket prices went up again.0 -

For sure, they can work with the budget they have, although a few more dollars would not hurt and I think they can stretch it a bit in the next few years, going to have to with what they have committed. Fans also need to understand they have a good core and will be back in it, if people are giving up season tickets after one bad season, the Phillies have bigger problems.0 -

Ya see, to me, calling Brown up too early is an irrational decision. The cost of what he could bring in the next two months compared to what they may lose by bringing him up too early and stunting his growth doesn't equal out in my book. I believe in this developing shit, and think it would be a terrible decision to put too much on his shoulders. It's a different story to bring him up on August 31st just in case they make the playoffs and he would become eligible for that roster. That way he gets everyday playing time still in the minors till the AAA teams ceases in early September, and doesn't put too much on his back. There's no reason to accelerate this process.0 -

I'm pretty much in agreement with this. unless they trade werth, brown should stay in AAA. I'd love to see them move werth to LF and platoon brown/francisco in RF, with ibanez going to the bench...but that ain't gonna happen. ya know, since amaro overpaid for ibanez by about 20 million0 -

It's not that it isn't a baseball town, as much as too many numbskulls approach the game with an "Eagles mentality" - a football mentality. Plus, A LOT of people have been spoiled by what they've done the past few years. I don't think the majority of season ticket holders will go away, but it won't nearly be like this year if they took a step back - ie I'll be able to get a ticket to at least every postseason series again, hopefully. Hell, it might be a good thing. This year has been the pinnacle of the Phillies being "The Place To Be" - too many douches just wanting to be there to be seen and take pictures for Facebook. Yuck.0 -

I completely agree. This is gonna sound stupid, but the games were more fun to go to before they won the WS. At least you knew the people attending were real fans. Now it's a shit show and the game is secondary to most people. When they are paying attention you hear things like who the hell is ross gload?

The age of innocence is gone, dude. Que sera sera. Sunrise, sunset. All that shit.
2007 was probably my most entertaining season. I'm not discrediting 2008 at all, because shit, that will be with me the rest of my life. But 2007 was my first season with going in on someone else's plan, went to Chicago to see the Phils beat the Cubs while also going to Lolla to see PJ, was there on the last day for that incredible division win. Just unreal.
Actually, I'd say 2007-2009 was one whole season.0 -
