funny that all this howard talk is heating up just as the R6 is in the middle of a patented homer streak---another bomb today!

fielder is entering his prime (he's only 26). howard gives diminshing returns on his contract because he's already peaked. fielder should make more if you are paying for expected performance. amaro doesn't believe in doing this...he'd rather pay for what a player has done, not what he will do. that's why he has sucked as a GM

howard's like pearl jam. they'll never top Ten...but they've remained pretty damn good for the last 2 decades. so the whole "peak" thing isn't quite fair to him. those first 2 seasons were not just good, they were historic. other than the hr numbers (which the whole league is down in right now--but i fully expect his 2nd half #'s to be better than 1st half) he's having one of his best season's since those first couple.

also--olney called fielder the worst fielding first baseman in the league...not howard. just saying.

thought this conversation was over?

    shane with a solo shot!
    GO PHILS.

great analogy with the PJ Ten - first 2 howard years. that is perfect.

howard is still productive. he just shouldn't be the 2nd highest paid player in baseball.

fielder and howard are both awful in the field. howard does have more range than fielder...which is scary since he moves like a dinosaur

common ground. it has been acheived!

Sabermetrics are little bit overrated these days. Bobby Abreu is a sabermetrics hall-of-famer, but he's a loser. Never goes for the big hit in the big situation; just looks for the walk. Helps his OBP, but it doesn't help his team win.

Howard comes up with 2 outs in the 9th and beats the Rockies in Game 4. He's certainly frustrating to watch a lot of the time, but he can get the job done.

werth got the GW hit in that game vs the rocks

Ok, but Howard tied it and scored the winning run. It was a huge hit and if Howard doesn't tie that game we're down to Game 5 with Cole Hamels. No blue flag in 2009 without Howard. He is a franchise player, certainly with some flaws, but a franchise player nonetheless. We should all have a litlte more appreciation after watching Rico Brogna et al.

By the way, I'm glad we're paying Blanton $2M less that we would've been paying Lee this year.

but brogna had back to back 100 RBI seasons as a phillie!!!

the howard double off huston street was huge. most times people forget about the hits that tie close games(like victorino's HR in the stairs game vs LA) and they are more important than the game winning hits.

I never complain about umps, but I think blanton is getting squeezed by this dude

I said that his 1st 5 seasons are probably the closiest in comparsion. Never did I say he was ruth. Not sure but I'd be suprised if there where more then a handful of players who had more hrs then howard to start a career.

we agree with No Code. that album is so underrated. sabermetrics prove that

As long as howard is wearing a phils jersey I will hope he does well.

Funny that you didn't mention the pickoff throw that just went off of his glove, allowing a runner to get to second

ruth, sosa, griffey and howard are the only players in mlb history to hit 45 hr's and have 135 rbis in 4 seasons in a row....he's also the fastest, in terms of games played, to reach 200 hr's in the history of the game.

In Ruth's first 5 seasons, he pitched over 1,000 innings to an ERA of just over 2.

    Stay Thirsty My Friends.

Anyone who tries to compare Ryan Howard to Babe Ruth loses every ounce of their credibility in any baseball conversation they ever have, period.
