Awesome news for the Red Sox: Six Red Sox players were named to the AL All-Star team this afternoon, with
Dustin Pedroia, Jason Bay, Kevin Youkilis, Tim Wakefield, Josh Beckett, and
Jonathan Papelbon all chosen for St. Louis.

Sox fans give Nomar a huge ovation in his first at bat as a visitor back in Fenway, that was nice to see.

It was great, I was hoping that the Braves would have done a similar video and salute to Smoltz when he returned last weekend, but then I remembered that the Braves aren't a class organization, even though they think so hard that they are.

I was also very impressed with the ovations Red Sox fans gave to Ken Griffey, Jr over the weekend. Classy fans there in Boston.

Beckett on the ball tonight and the Sox are the first AL team to reach 50 wins this year.

Youkilis is really struggling right now. He only hit .244 for the month of June and he's currently 2 for 26 this month. I kinda wish he wasn't on the All-Star team so he could get some rest next week.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

I wonder if the moving between 1st and 3rd is taking a toll on him.

One thing I've noticed in the past few games, man, he is getting some tough calls with the strike zone ... it seems that past few umps the Sox have had have had some generous (read: large) strike zones

Probably just the ins and outs of a long season. Youk will be fine.

Did anyone else see the article about Bartolo Colon and how he is missing.
Sounds just like the end of last year when he was with the Red Sox.

    it's like a broken record:

Sox take 2 out 3 in the series ...

Paps makes it interesting in the 9th ...

    Love that dirty water ...

Being a closer has to be the worst job ever. No matter what you do, it'll never be good enough unless you strike out the side every time. In Detroit, Rodney has not blown a save all season and has converted like 20 straight or something... but all anyone does is complain about how 'interesting' he makes it ;)

Papelbon is one intimidating motherfucker on the mound.

Ok, he came in with a two run lead ...

    He walked the first batter.

Cabrera laced one down the right field line which, had a funny bounce ... could have gone into the stands or past JD Drew for extra bases, but Drew made a great play and held Cabrera to a single.

Hairston came up and hit one about 380 feet which dies in the breeze, caught by Ellsbury on the track, run scores, one out.

    Strikes out Holliday

Single by Suzuki ... 1st and 2nd, tying run in scoring position.

    Strikes out Cust.

I'd call that "making it interesting" ... woudn't you?

Absolutely. Just saying, closers can never win.

I wouldn't say it if it weren't true ... some Papelbon knowledge to drop on you (seeing as you haven't watched many Red Sox games this year ...)

Strikeout per walk ratio by year
    2006 – 5.8
    2007 – 5.6
    2008 – 9.6
    2009 – 2.3

Baserunners allowed per inning by year
    2006 – 0.78
    2007 – 0.77
    2008 – 0.95
    2009 – 1.32

Of his 37 innings pitched, only 7 times has he had a 1-2-3 inning.

So, while he’s been in better form in the past month or so ... it has been more "interesting" all year.

do you suppose he's tipping pitches this year? it's not like his stuff has fallen off precipitously, but to make those massive changes something has to be going on...

when you watch him. his fastball is "only" hitting 94-95, not 98. It's also a little flatter (not tailing as much) I think the working on back to back nights is wearing on him.

I agree that it's getting to him.

Yet another thing that sucks about working 2nd shift...no Extra Innings...no watching the Sox every night. It's not the same when all you get to do is watch ESPN GameCast at work and follow on message boards...
