That is such a steal for the Red Sox as well, he is just getting better and better. Nice to see the hometown discount because if he waited out he probably could have made more money through arbitration and those free agency years.PJ:

Anyone here anything on Manny? Where is he going to be in the up and coming season(s)???
Manny will most likely be a Dodger.
Pedroia made $380k his rookie year and made $457 last year.
Next year he makes $1.5 mil plus a $1.5 mil signing bonus.
Not a bad little bit of chump change.- Busted down the pretext

there is actually a chance Pedro would get in with the Big 3 (Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz) if all 4 don't come back in 2009 ...

Not that I know of, just offered him arbitration. I am sure we will see some action when the winter meetings start in Vegas. Texiera wants to be signed by Christmas so you may see him sign, as well as C.C. Then all the other free agents will go fast. I love this time of year, can't wait to see what happens!PJ:

While it still could have a happy ending for you ... it may take a while ... looks like Tek is declining arbitration and willing to hit the free agent market ...
~~~~~~~
LAS VEGAS - A source close to Sox catcher Jason Varitek confirmed that Varitek would decline salary arbitration from the Red Sox before the midnight deadline. This will allow Varitek to pursue his free-agent market without being tied exclusively to the Red Sox for the upcoming season.
Varitek's agent, Scott Boras, who was due in here late tonight, always believes he can create a market for a player. While the market for Varitek doesn't appear to be vast at this point, Boras understands it's still early in the process and there are teams - the Tigers, Marlins, Dodgers to name three, who could use an experienced catcher.
Declining arbitration certainly doesn't mean Varitek, who hit .220, can't continue to negotiate with Boston, but accepting arbitration would have insured he'd be a Red Sox for another season and he could have continued to negotiate on something long term. Varitek is coming off a four-year, $40 million deal and would likely have made at least the $10 million per year he earned in 2008 if he went to arbitration.
i see the yanks dusted off Reggie to persuade CC to go there. I assume the pitch is all about tradition and things that happened ALONG time ago.
Well you know how the Yankees work whatever it takes to get there man and you know they will. Money the key to getting the free agents of choice.
The market has now changed on Tek. With Detroit getting Laird there will be no one willing to give him a long term deal at $10+ million a year as well as part with a first round draft pick that now comes with him turning down arbitration.
My guess is he comes back here on a one year deal at around $9 million.
