Mr. rrivers...if you are a fantasy fan, read Erikson's work! Oh my gosh, the man is a master. I'll admit, it's a little rough getting through the first book, but it was so worth it. He's rather...brutal concerning gore and futility, so I warn you against that
And I definitely recommend Robert Jordan's stuff. Whereas the story is long, the characters are unique, which is really rare. As are Erikson's. I just hate stereotypical characters. *gag*When life gives you lemons, throw them at somebody.0 -

I remember starting that one when I was in high school; never able to get through it, though....
I've been on a Jane Austen & Bronte sisters kick lately; I just finished Wuthering Heights last night. I don't know how the relationship between Heathcliff and Catherine is considered a 'great' love story - Heathcliff is psycho!!<a href="http://s2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/kittykat699/?action=view¤t=PennysHawaiiDec2006031d.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/kittykat699/PennysHawaiiDec2006031d.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Thanks for the recomendation. I wouldn't say I am a fantasy fan, per se, just a fan of good stories no matter the genre."We're fixed good, lamp-wise."0 -

On the subject of Robert Jordan, I like some of the Wheel Of Time books but that series got stupid after a while. The guy can't write female characters to save his life (pardon the pun - R.I.P Robert).
I'm eagerly anticipating the new Song Of Ice And Fire book.0 -
Hannibal Rising....I'm shiting in my pants...brrBeavis : Is this Pearl Jam?
Butt-head: This guy makes faces like Eddie Vedder.
Beavis: No, Eddie Vedder makes faces like this guy.
Butt-head: I heard these guys, like, came first and Pearl Jam ripped them off.
Beavis: No, Pearl Jam came first.
Butt-head: Well, they both suck.0 -

I have heard that about the later books in the series, which might be one of the reasons I haven't read the second book yet. I think the final Wheel of Time book will come out relatively soon. I remember reading that he was giving his family members notes on what was supposed to happen."We're fixed good, lamp-wise."0 -
"The Destruction of the Bismarck"....yet another book on the German Battleship of WW II fame. All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.0

I love David Sedaris! I know my neighbors have to think I'm a little off, because I listen to Sedaris while working in my yard, and I don't even realize I'm laughing out loud until I'm wiping the tears from my face! "When you are engulfed in flames" is good, but if you need to laugh, and lift some of your day to day stressors, listen to "Me talk pretty one day". You should listen to David Sedaris, his narration is awesome, especially when he is speaking as his mother, sister or brother. My husband and I went a few years ago to hear him read from "Dress your family in courdoroy and denim" and it was priceless. My husband hadn't read anything of his before that night, but really got into it that night on.
Right now I'm reading "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" by Barbara Kingsolver. She is a fantastic fiction writer but this book is about her family's year long project to eat only local or personally grown foods. It's really been an eye opener for me, specifically about how much petroleum is used to grow and manufacture food.
This is a great thread!I'll ride the wave where it takes me

i just read "The Poisonwood Bible" by her. I liked it for the most part but I gotta be honest...the first 300 pages or so moved SO slowly for me. After that though it got interesting. She does portray things very well0 -
an instructional book on kayaking - i just got one last year and have been experimenting and reading up on techniqueAs you live your life in sometimes quiet desperation, facing adversity and tragedy: if you have hope and love, that mixture helps you overcome that tragedy and go on with the rest of your life.”

Poisonwood Bible is one of my favorite books ever. I agree with the first part of the book moving slowly. I am so glad I stuck with it, though. The book def. changed my life. It really motivated me to research Africa. I was supposed to go on a medical missionary trip in 03, but it was cancelled due to increased violence where we were going to be. My hope is to try again with another group.I'll ride the wave where it takes me
