Having been a bit put off by a couple of book I recently started but then abandoned (one, simply because the print was too small for my old eyes), I decided to re-read an "oldie but goodie", John Steinbeck's Sweet Thursday.
    Sweet Thursday novel - Wikipedia

But, wait!  Oldie, yes, but goodie?  I'm dismayed at how I could have ever thought this was one of my favorite Steinbeck's (it's been quite a few years since last reading it).  It doesn't hold a candle to the vastly far superior Cannery Row (which I read again last year for  the fourth or fifth time.)  For one thing, Doc is not nearly represented as well in the earlier Cannery Row, and I was really put off by his torturing of octopi on page 42.  And his representation of women in this book was, well, dated, to put it nicely.  That just doesn't fly today.  If I recall correctly, the book gets better toward the end and it's a fairly quick read, so I'll probably finish it, but I would never recommend this as a good place to start with the great John Steinbeck.

When I was a kid, my teacher read Jackson's chilling short story "The Lottery" to us.  I think that was probably the first time I ever experience something akin to being traumatized.  As much as I absolutely hated that story, truth is it's a brilliant work that epitomizes the horror genre and clearly illustrates the dark side of human nature through conformity.
It's a shame I was too young for that story at the time because it kind of permanently block my curiosity about others of Jackson's work which are said to be quite brilliant.

Yes!  Creepy as all get out!
Good point about her not explaining anything.  I think that adds to the unsettling nature of the story.

I you like creep-out stories, another good one (considered a "novelette) is called Sandkings by George R. R. Martin.  It was first published in Omni magazine in 1979.  It was described as being "about a cruel dilettante who buys exotic, insect like pets that evolve into a hive-minded species that eventually turns on him and his world."  I still have that issue of Omni around here someplace but it can also be found in his collection of stories, Dreamsongs: A Retrospective. Super creeeeepy!

I need to check out The Lottery! Always been on my list.

If we are talking short stories, you can’t do better than Night Shift and Skeleton Crew by Stephen King! My favorites!
