I think the post count just reflects the threads which were transferred to this board. But what do I know.

Nice Jason Stark article on ESPN.com today about arbitration and what it could mean for the Phils, Boston and other teams.

It was good and explains why I think the Phils have a problem on their hands in a few years because of in place salary structures.

I don't think it's nearly as big a problem for the Red Sox because even if they let Youk walk, their best prospect in AAA is a slugging 1st baseman and there is no way they let Papelbon go. Of course what I think they do is trade Lowell after the 2009 season, move Youk to 3rd and call up the 1st baseman.

The Phils have a problem because Hamels is going to want to get paid and he looks around and sees Moyer making 8, Eaton 9.5 and Myers 12.5. Hamels will break the bank if he stays healthy.

The Phils are definitely in a spot, especially with Hamels. Hopefully, the organization steps up and gives him a salary at or above what his service time dictates. Although I can see them paying at or close to Cole's arbitration number for a 1 year deal this year and then worrying about a longer term deal after the season, since Cole has arbitration till 2011 or so.

First baseman Ryan Howard and left-hander Cole Hamels will be the Phillies' biggest challenges in salary arbitration, but right-hander Ryan Madson will be no pushover. Madson, a free agent after next season, is represented by Scott Boras, and already has turned down a three-year, $12 million offer, according to a major-league source. After the Phillies won the World Series, Boras compared the combination of Madson and Brad Lidge to Mariano Rivera and John Wettleland ...

Yeah, but that's all posturing on part of the agent and his client. Anybody need a ticket to the St. Patty's Day game in Clearwater? I have an extra one and looking to get rid of it - $10. PM me if need be.

Sign Hamels, yes... but I'm not so keen on signing Howard to a long term (A-Rod type money) deal. I just don't see him being worth it.

Madson turned down a 3 year $12 mil offer.... I see him being traded at some point during the season. He wants closer money but won't be the closer here.

Especially since he will be 31 when he's a free agent. He and his agent are going to try and cash in for being left in the farm system a year or two too long.

That's the same offer that Romero accepted.

    There's two differences though:

Madson is a lot younger and Scott Boras is Madson's agent.

My thoughts now too. I figured it would be Howard and Madson holding out but now it seems like just Howard.
