    they sure did have different mothers. johnny's mum killed herself, hence their growing up and now living together. so just how solid those building blocks were was open to interpretation. they were almost the same age as well, with hamish being older by just two months. so their father had some explaining to do. not that he ever did.

    i was outside when hamish showed up, with johnny looking his usuual sheepish self two steps behind. i was beyond thrilled to see him. to see anyone from 'the outside'. controlling myself better than i thought i could, i strolled towards him with a grin on my face. i wrapped my arms around him as he did the same and kissed his cheek. i didn't want to let go.

    'oh my lordy it is good to see you hamish.'

    i looked over to johnny. he was hard to read sometimes. i reached out to him pulling him into our hug.

    'good to see you too johnny. how have you been?'

    Hamish took my hand and dragged me along to the back of the car. He smiled as if he was about to let me in on a conspiracy. He opened up the trunk and showed me my gear.

    i looked up see security walking towards us. they must have thought i was planning an escape or something. it was great being watched all the time. i walked away from the car to show i had no intention of going anywhere. i heard the trunk close and then felt someone's hand in mine. it was hamish. of course. i put my other hand up in surrender.

    'relax i wasn't going anywhere.'

    ignoring security i turned to hamish.

    'i think after today it'd be better if you stayed away.'

    i pulled my hand from his and went over to johnny.

    but even as he said it, he started after her. johnny stayed where he was.

    Johnny thought he'd do the more practical thing. He got Anna's stuff out of the trunk and walked over to the reception to ask what he should do with the stuff.

    the receptionist didn't know what she should do. fortunately david was in the office at the time. he asked johnny if he was here for anna. when johnny said he was, david told him to leave it and he'd take care of it. the receptionist looked at david like he'd lost his mind. not knowing what else to do, johnny retreated back outside.

    When he got outside he just sat down in the car and listened to the CD player, seeing that Hamish and Anna were nowhere to be found.

    touching me was not something hamish should have done. his hand on my back made shivers run through my body. when i moved away, he moved with me. would it be so bad to fall. yeah it would. i can't be thinking about hamish in any other way but as a friend. i missed davey. or was it that i just missed men. i took hamish's hand in mine so he couldn't touch me. a stray bit of hair fell across his eyes and purely on reflex, i reached up and pushed it back over behind his ear. he leaned his head into my hand. i pulled my hand away.

    'i can't deal with some things right now hamish. and one of those is being around you.'

    talk about a wounded puppy. i didn't want to hurt him, but i had to have things clear in my head.

    'it's not just you though. i don't want you to think i don't appreciate you. i do. but being by myself since davey left, is not really the best thing i could have done. i miss him. or i miss having a man, i don't know. but what i do know is that i don't want to end up doing anything i'm going to regret later. you need to give me space. can you understand that?'

    He could not find anything to say or was still searching for something he could reply with. I didn't wait around to find out, I jumped of a small wall on to the sand that led to the lake. Hamish followed still a little uneasy with what I said.
