Nope it's not me... but the title 'Laurie waving the flag of Ireland' somehow makes me think she might be American . And that was taken on Paddy's day... I already said yeh, we fly the flag on Paddys day.

See my post... where I said it doesn't matter if it's in America, or Ireland or wherever... there's no point flying your own flag in your own country for no particular reason. We know where you're from. Don't go turning this into the usual 'anti-america' thing. I couldn't give a fuck really if people wanna fly their flag in their own home in their own country... but it just makes NO senseTO ME.

but people arent flying american flags to tell people "where they're from!" the "reason" they are flying it is because they are proud of their country--or perhaps they know someone in harms way and flying the flag is their way of showing support. to say someone flying their own country's flag makes no sense just shows a level of ignorance, i'm afraid.

we don't... I just deducted the girl is most likely American... we tend to buy the HUGE flags and wear them.

Why should I feel bad or have to apologize for flying the flag of MY country outside MY house????? Whether it is beacuse of a patriotic day (Flag Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July etc.), to honor our veterans or those serving in the armed forces, to show pride in the country or just because I can....
And Helen, no you don't know where I am from... you can't possibly unless I told you. So driving by my house and seeing a flag flying outside doesn't tell you where I am from or why it is there.

I fail to understand how flying the flag supports somebody in harms way :? but that's just me. When my brother was in harms way, I showed my support by calling him, emailing him, sending him stuff. Made much more sense than sticking a flag on my porch

and to lots of other people, it DOES make sense...so your opinion, even held by a great many....doesn't 'prove' anything....simply...opinion. it's a part of american culture. i do not find it odd that someone outside the country doesn't 'understand'...just as i may not understand all in another countries culture. only difference is, i don't try to tell said cultures that what they do is wrong, makes no sense, is silly, or what have you. it harms no one, many enjoy it, it's our culture...not yours...so who cares? i think that question has been asked numerous times over. i could not care less if everyone in another country sang to the rooftops their country is the greatest in the world, nor would i care if they draped every inch of it in their flag, people danced and sang only national anthems, etc.......it has zero effect on my life, if they enjoy it, more power to em.

ummmmmmmm yea...pretty sure people call/email and all those other good things in addition to flying a flag for their loved one's fighting wars. i think there's just something symbolic about raising your flag to honor that loved one or to honor loved one's who have died for your freedom, or to just honor the country you love so much. its just like you guys at your sporting events waving irish flags. you could just yell and scream to show your support. but the flag is symbolic to you. it brings attention to you and what you are supporting.
you know it....because he clearly loves america and isn't afraid to show it. and silly squirrel, as i assume most don't fly off to other countries....apparently no one has informed him how silly it is to fly a flag in your own country for no reason. i guess the rule book of what is appropriate doesn't come in squirrel size. altho, i don't even know of it's existence in human scale either.....guess we didn't get a dumbed down version for america telling us what we should do, and that displays of patriotism are silly and should be frowned upon.

I personally don't have a problem if people want to fly a flag. It's when they start wearing or draping it over themselves a la Bon Jovi that I start to take issue.

if i choose to display our flag on february 26th.....or on september 17th....on days that apparently would be 'no reason' to display a flag in your opinion, but hold great significance to ME.........how is that 'no reason'...and more importantly, why is it a concern of yours...or your place to say it's silly, has no meaning, etc, etc. we americans often get accused of being insensitive to other cultures....and all i can say is, clearly, the same can be said for a great many others.

my poor squirrel, getting dragged into this mess lol
been casually reading thru this thread. i still don't understand the rancor people have towards those who fly their country's flags. what does it matter to you? who cares what your opinion is? should flag-wavers care, really? people have different ways of expressing their love of country, there's no right or wrong way. it's opinion.
yet i keep seeing the same opinion regurgitated as "fact", time and time again, by people who haven't even stepped foot in the U.S., or clearly have a chip on their shoulder when it comes to the U.S. at least base your opinion on knowledge instead of supposition.
doth protest too much. the more the U.S. keeps getting slammed, the more i think it's an insecurity thing about your own country. i don't have a flag up by my front door, that doesn't make me less patriotic. if someone chooses to think that, that's fine, i'll just consider them to be an idiot and move on.
i know by posting this it will either get ignored, or glossed over and misinterpreted because it takes more effort to actually understand someone than to continue spouting off nonsense. so i'm not expecting an answer to anything, none that are lucid anyway.
and for the record, i was born here, to immigrants that came from cuba and spain (communism and facism just didn't sit well with them, go figure). they went thru hell when they first got here, but i'm glad to be in this country. and i have had the luxury (and that's what it is, a luxury...like fanch said, not everybody gets the chance) to travel to other countries, so i can't be accused of being some ignorant american that's never stepped beyond my borders.
so whatever. bottom line - don't get twisted thinking your opinion is fact, cuz it ain't.

$51.7 million
Dollar value of U.S. imports of American flags in 2001. The majority of this amount ($29.7 million) was for U.S. flags made in China.
The bulk of these flags were imported in October 2001, the first full month following 9/11, when $34.8 million worth were brought into the country.
...because that's a lot more normal....
