Well to be accurate this was moved to AMT as the discussion morphed into what it has become.

Personally I don't see the hubbub, but whatever. People fly flags for a variety of reasons all unknown to me. When a flag was flown at our house it was because my brother was in Doha, Qatar. We had also hung one of those star flags representing that a family member was in harms way. My brother served as Fire Chief at Doha AB , setting up/equiping 3 fire stations at the Doha airport. This was during the build up to the debacle we have now.

Once he was home , they came down.

I think flags here are flown as a reminder of what IS good about our country and how far astray we are to our ideals.And that alot of work is required to get us back on that path. Thats just MY opinion.


I do have to say however that seeing another countries flag displayed bothered me in the past. Assimilation mentality. however you guys have allowed for me to change my views on this.Thanks for that. Shows and speaks to what a "melting pot" this country really is.

Really though I think what this thread has become has done nothing more than inflame already misguided nationalism , on all sides.

tell me, where do you think you are seeing all of these miniature flags over here? cuz the only time i see a lot of them are at political events, flag day, and 4th of july parades. i'd venture to guess (and note that i am not stating it as fact as i do not live in your country) that ireland puts their flags out for similar occasions over there...much like every other country does.

its so odd to me that people who do not live in the united states feel as if they know more about it than actual u.s citizens. whats with you guys' preoccupation with us and our supposed flag waving antics?

I never claim to know more... tis just an observation. We certainly wave our flags at sporting events and paddys weekend... we don't have a flag day (what the hell's that? ). I don't see them at political events either... cos we don't ham them up like you lot do and we don't have them on our front porch... and if people were going around with their little miniature flags going 'god bless ireland', they'd probably be American tourists

I looked up 2003 to see if it was for the special olympics or something... but that was in June :? so they woulda been taken down by then. If it was LATE August.. it maybe for the All Ireland finals coming up... but usually they'd display the team colours... and I don't think they do in Grafton Street. Oh this is all very confusing

I'm pretty sure EVERY country in the world does that... even the US... I could be wrong but I doubt it. So your point's null :P (and by sporting events, I mean where Ireland's playing another country). If it were two Irish teams they'd either wave the flag of that team or simply wear the colours. I'm pretty sure these standards actually exist in the US too

grafton street in one month of the year... most likely for a sporting event as i've been in Dublin in August (as helen should quite frankly fucking know) to watch PJ... and i have a huge batch of witnesses who will testify that the streets were not awash with flags

unlike this (type in "US flag homes" into flickr search and the results are incredible... this image was the fourth one down!)

and incidentally, i just noticed my "god bless the u.s.a" coffee cup over here! hahaha...i was born on flag day and my girlfriend gave it to me as a gag gift a couple years ago. its got an american flag waving in the background. you would absolutely love it.

I don't think anyone said it 'irritates the hell' out of them we're just trying to get our head around it. I have less issue with people who aren't FROM a country flying their flag than someone flying their own flag in their own home in their own country... whether it's in America or whether it's in Ireland or whether it's in fucking Timbuktu :? it just makes zero sense... and the issue of ex pats has already been addressed several times in this thread.

and why do you have less issue with someone who isnt from america flying his home country's flag than someone who is from america flying their america's flag? i cant get my head around that at all. that just seems like you might have a problem with america and not flag waving. if not, then what's the difference? to me, each person is proud of their country and wants to show it. so i guess if i ever move to ireland, you wouldn't have a problem with me flying an american flag on my porch. yet, you would have a problem with my brother doing the same in washington dc. doesnt make sense. we're equally proud of our country.

so 4th of july then ....lol....dude, people dont just hang a flag at 12:01am on the 4th and take it down at 11:55pm that evening. often times there are parades and fireworks and the like going on at different times during the week around that time. if the weather is nice like it usually is that time of the year, people will just leave it up for a lil bit. thanks for proving my point though. the jeagler appreciates it.

oh and dunk, grafton street isn't our main street... O'Connell street is... I did a google image search and found ONE flag and I can spot THREE in the crowd... by the looks of the parade, I'm guessing this IS the Easter Rising parade... here ya go soulsinging.

See my post... where I said it doesn't matter if it's in America, or Ireland or wherever... there's no point flying your own flag in your own country for no particular reason. We know where you're from. Don't go turning this into the usual 'anti-america' thing. I couldn't give a fuck really if people wanna fly their flag in their own home in their own country... but it just makes NO sense.
