and to lots of other people, it DOES make sense...so your opinion, even held by a great many....doesn't 'prove' anything....simply...opinion. it's a part of american culture. i do not find it odd that someone outside the country doesn't 'understand'...just as i may not understand all in another countries culture. only difference is, i don't try to tell said cultures that what they do is wrong, makes no sense, is silly, or what have you. it harms no one, many enjoy it, it's our culture...not yours...so who cares? i think that question has been asked numerous times over. i could not care less if everyone in another country sang to the rooftops their country is the greatest in the world, nor would i care if they draped every inch of it in their flag, people danced and sang only national anthems, etc.......it has zero effect on my life, if they enjoy it, more power to em.

my poor squirrel, getting dragged into this mess lol
been casually reading thru this thread. i still don't understand the rancor people have towards those who fly their country's flags. what does it matter to you? who cares what your opinion is? should flag-wavers care, really? people have different ways of expressing their love of country, there's no right or wrong way. it's opinion.
yet i keep seeing the same opinion regurgitated as "fact", time and time again, by people who haven't even stepped foot in the U.S., or clearly have a chip on their shoulder when it comes to the U.S. at least base your opinion on knowledge instead of supposition.
doth protest too much. the more the U.S. keeps getting slammed, the more i think it's an insecurity thing about your own country. i don't have a flag up by my front door, that doesn't make me less patriotic. if someone chooses to think that, that's fine, i'll just consider them to be an idiot and move on.
i know by posting this it will either get ignored, or glossed over and misinterpreted because it takes more effort to actually understand someone than to continue spouting off nonsense. so i'm not expecting an answer to anything, none that are lucid anyway.
and for the record, i was born here, to immigrants that came from cuba and spain (communism and facism just didn't sit well with them, go figure). they went thru hell when they first got here, but i'm glad to be in this country. and i have had the luxury (and that's what it is, a luxury...like fanch said, not everybody gets the chance) to travel to other countries, so i can't be accused of being some ignorant american that's never stepped beyond my borders.
so whatever. bottom line - don't get twisted thinking your opinion is fact, cuz it ain't.

just....damn. incredible.
to a devout jew living in Jerusalem saying "god bless america" could be horrendously offensive no? a muslim from Kabul?
basic human rights to us perhaps... but its the culture of other countries to do things to do their bodies... amazonian tribesmen paint red dots on their bodies and the bodies of their sons and then have giant ants bite them to highlight the tribes strength.. its painful, not very nice to watch and could be seen as violating human rights... but those people dont see it as that and they wouldnt want us to remove their customs because it violates 'our' human rights measurement..
but that doesnt mean to say i dont find it odd, a bit silly... like when people in certain countries spit on their palm to shake on a deal... its their custom, doesnt harm anyone... but its kinda odd and silly... to me.

and odd and silly are not the words to characterize mutilation based on misogyny. and again, your two examples do not even compare to flags or 'god bless america'. please explain how they compare exactly.

ok i fixed your quote again
as i said, and if you had read the thread you'd know, its not the US flag at all... i dislike flags being flown for seemingly patriotic reasons in any country, i said about the idiot who does it here in my hometown... like he's forgotten where he lives.
i also had a thread on the old forum where i asked why people bring their national flag to rock concerts... although the answers on thread were kinda reaonable and so i could understand why... i still wouldnt do it and i find it odd.. so i asked the question.

difference being...i don't lecture people on their bad grammar, poor spelling, in threads that aren't about bad grammar, poor spelling, pet peeves...and i don't involve myself in jokes that involve sterotyping, i only involve myself in arguing against stereotyping when it is actually used as a tool to defend a position on a topic. i do not seek out threads with stereotypical jokes b/c they don't amuse me, but i also don't try to ruin the fun of those who do. that's the part i don't *get*.....b/c this thread was not about flag waving, it was about the media, bias, the obama inauguration.....the fact that the op threw in the offhand 'god bless, greatest country on earth' or what have you (which btw - i took as completely off the cuff, wink-wink comment - shows all our differing inferences) wasn't the subject....but you chose to make it the subject. well, create your own thread about it then, no? :P
but sure....enjoy your flag hatred.
and my husband is an atrocious speller, even worse than i am as a typist  and yet i love him so anyway.
one more btw - no one is asking YOU to respect our flag, just to acknowledge our culture and right to be rah-rah flag-wavers, god blessers and whatever else within our own country.
 well easter isn't in August... hmm... neither is paddys day... I've never seen grafton st. decorated in the irish flags... unless you took a picture of 'carrolls tourist shop'? can I see the picture and maybe I can clarify... it might have been some major sporting event... the rugby world cup was on in 2003 but that was November I think.
It's in my photo album from when I was there that summer. I don't have it on my computer, but I count at least 4 scattered around the street.
that just seems like you might have a problem with america and not flag waving. if not, then what's the difference? to me, each person is proud of their country and wants to show it. so i guess if i ever move to ireland, you wouldn't have a problem with me flying an american flag on my porch. yet, you would have a problem with my brother doing the same in washington dc. doesnt make sense. we're equally proud of our country.
See my post... where I said it doesn't matter if it's in America, or Ireland or wherever... there's no point flying your own flag in your own country for no particular reason. We know where you're from. Don't go turning this into the usual 'anti-america' thing. I couldn't give a fuck really if people wanna fly their flag in their own home in their own country... but it just makes NO sense.
Ever wear a Pearl Jam shirt to a Pearl Jam concert?
we don't... I just deducted the girl is most likely American... we tend to buy the HUGE flags and wear them.
D2D... it makes no sense, not just to me evidently... but to plenty of people according to this thread... so if i were to say 'it makes no sense to me' that would be misleading and making the issue simply about me and MY opinion, which in this case it's not. So thank you but my statement didn't need fixing
Wrong. It makes no sense to exactly TWO people in this thread... you and dunk, our resident "piss on American patriotism every chance we can possibly get" posters.
its cultural in certain middle eastern countries to let women have their clitoris removed... you ok with that? you dont think it's odd? nonsense? wrong!?
its cultural in india that daughters can be swapped for goats or cattle.. you ok with that? you dont think it's odd? nonsense? wrong!?
its the culture in america to fly the flag, say god bless it and to also think that its the greatest country in the world.. i'm not ok with that, i think its odd, makes no sense and wrong.. wrong as in it promotes blinkered patriotism for patriotism sake.
I think you finally convinced me here. I can totally see how an American putting a flag on his porch is on the same level of reprehensible cultural practices as clitoral circumcision or selling people as property. Thanks for helping me to finally see the light!
sigh... this forum cannot and wouldnt function if i had to go back through this thread and highlight and bolden 'important' parts.
i'm pretty sure that i could trawl the internet or ask people for unusual customs that harm no-one but that you would find odd, nonsense or wrong.
Odd, certainly. But not wrong or nonsensical. I can also guarantee they wouldn't "irk" me and certainly not so much that I would spend days posting about how wrong they are.
grafton street in one month of the year... most likely for a sporting event as i've been in Dublin in August (as helen should quite frankly fucking know) to watch PJ... and i have a huge batch of witnesses who will testify that the streets were not awash with flags
unlike this (type in "US flag homes" into flickr search and the results are incredible... this image was the fourth one down!)
good for them. looks like summertime. my guess is flag day or 4th of july. well done dunk. quick! do another pointless random google search! hurry!!
I've been in America at different times of the year and there's always flags flying from houses. Why try and pretend this only happens at certain times of the year?
But as far as having a flag flying outside your home...different ballgame altogether. I mean, why do it? Seems to me like a case of insecurity, or immaturity.
Proud of the country, maybe? Love the country maybe? You do realize that flying a flag isn't the same as putting up a sign that says "Byrnzie's country sucks!", right? If they aren't doing something offensive, why do you care what someone else does?
Insecurity? Immaturity? How?
It's all part and parcel of the same 'U.S.A! U.S.A! 'The greatest country in the world' bullshit. I don't particularly care. It's just a tad irritating and pathetic is all. Which is why we're discussing it.

basic human rights to us perhaps... but its the culture of other countries to do things to do their bodies... amazonian tribesmen paint red dots on their bodies and the bodies of their sons and then have giant ants bite them to highlight the tribes strength.. its painful, not very nice to watch and could be seen as violating human rights... but those people dont see it as that and they wouldnt want us to remove their customs because it violates 'our' human rights measurement..
but that doesnt mean to say i dont find it odd, a bit silly... like when people in certain countries spit on their palm to shake on a deal... its their custom, doesnt harm anyone... but its kinda odd and silly... to me.
learn to use the fucking quote function man!
to some people, mainly in the middle east it has to be said... the US flag is probably more offensive than both of my examples above combined.
i hear you man... but its still the greatest country in the world to the vast majority of people who live in it... so perhaps asking god for even more help is a bit greedy isnt it?
you can think something is odd and silly. it doesn't make it fact.
and odd and silly are not the words to characterize mutilation based on misogyny. and again, your two examples do not even compare to flags or 'god bless america'. please explain how they compare exactly.
perhaps the jew and muslim you suggested would be more offended by US policies. THAT is a whole other story. maybe you're just confused. or just reaching to make a point because you've lost steam. i'm guessing both.
and the flag of whatever country you mentioned that permits cutting off women's clitoris' is pretty damn offensive to me. difference is i dont give a shit if they choose to fly it on their front porch one bit...or if they say "god bless" their country or whatever.
The phrase" God Bless America" may irk . I know you're a scot , But why should God Save The Queen?

but thats you... and i don't respect a flag from the country that allows idiots to own a gun because of a 300 year old 'right' and results in 6 kids dying per day... but thats a whole new thread
everybody gets bugged by silly or mundane things... i know for a fact that even though decides2dream is on this thread saying "c'est la vie, who cares, its not a big deal, etc".. i know that she cannot stand things like bad grammar, poor spelling, jokes that may involve stereotyping... which to me are no big deal ( to a point ) ... but she can pontificate at great length on these subjects as they genuinely irk her and she doesnt get it.
leave me be with my flag waving hatred
god shouldnt... she should be hung.
look at the 4th verse
Lord, grant that Marshal Wade,
May by thy mighty aid,
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush and like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush,
God save the King.

well there you go. i hinted at this earlier with helen and she got a little testy. but you just proved my point. you dont care about flags in general. you, my friend, clearly have a problem with the flag of the united states of america.
you basically just admitted as much.
ok i fixed your quote again
as i said, and if you had read the thread you'd know, its not the US flag at all... i dislike flags being flown for seemingly patriotic reasons in any country, i said about the idiot who does it here in my hometown... like he's forgotten where he lives.
i also had a thread on the old forum where i asked why people bring their national flag to rock concerts... although the answers on thread were kinda reaonable and so i could understand why... i still wouldnt do it and i find it odd.. so i asked the question.
same here..
you tryin' to say jesus christ can't hit a curve ball?
so which is it?
difference being...i don't lecture people on their bad grammar, poor spelling, in threads that aren't about bad grammar, poor spelling, pet peeves...and i don't involve myself in jokes that involve sterotyping, i only involve myself in arguing against stereotyping when it is actually used as a tool to defend a position on a topic. i do not seek out threads with stereotypical jokes b/c they don't amuse me, but i also don't try to ruin the fun of those who do. that's the part i don't *get*.....b/c this thread was not about flag waving, it was about the media, bias, the obama inauguration.....the fact that the op threw in the offhand 'god bless, greatest country on earth' or what have you (which btw - i took as completely off the cuff, wink-wink comment - shows all our differing inferences) wasn't the subject....but you chose to make it the subject. well, create your own thread about it then, no? :P
but sure....enjoy your flag hatred.
and my husband is an atrocious speller, even worse than i am as a typist  and yet i love him so anyway.
one more btw - no one is asking YOU to respect our flag, just to acknowledge our culture and right to be rah-rah flag-wavers, god blessers and whatever else within our own country.
Let's just breathe...
I am myself like you somehow
It's in my photo album from when I was there that summer. I don't have it on my computer, but I count at least 4 scattered around the street.
Pretty much!
Ever wear a Pearl Jam shirt to a Pearl Jam concert?
Wrong. It makes no sense to exactly TWO people in this thread... you and dunk, our resident "piss on American patriotism every chance we can possibly get" posters.
I think you finally convinced me here. I can totally see how an American putting a flag on his porch is on the same level of reprehensible cultural practices as clitoral circumcision or selling people as property. Thanks for helping me to finally see the light!
Odd, certainly. But not wrong or nonsensical. I can also guarantee they wouldn't "irk" me and certainly not so much that I would spend days posting about how wrong they are.
I've been in America at different times of the year and there's always flags flying from houses. Why try and pretend this only happens at certain times of the year?
It's all part and parcel of the same 'U.S.A! U.S.A! 'The greatest country in the world' bullshit. I don't particularly care. It's just a tad irritating and pathetic is all. Which is why we're discussing it.
How so?
