well i just made a point about people 'blindly' flying their flags. you just glossed over it, and it wasn't like it was buried in back pages.

i agree, no point debating here because you just want to hear what you think. i've addressed you enough. enjoy yourself!
ooohh that's funny, I could say your last paragraph to YOU :D

Sorry for 'ignoring' your wonderful post which, I'm sure, cleared the whole thing up :?

I'd this debate with anyone who wants to discuss it like an adult... thanks for your input though.
i posted more, but go ahead and ignore it. it's probably beyond you.

and i can, and will say, the last line as well, sweetheart.

  • dear gawd....if you take those seriously...there's no hope. truly. hahahahahahaha.
expressing love of country, patriotism, respect, unity....all sorts of things, you'd have to ask each individual american who flyies their flag why they do so.

and even if others share your opinion...it's STILL opinion!

and alrighty then! who told you not to discuss? i merely questioned why...and now you answered...basically for the fuck of it. gotcha.
why do we talk about ANYTHING? Unless we do something about what we're talking about, we're only discussing it for the fuck of it. Am I wrong???

And you should know, I take very little seriously.

It may be still opinion but it's not just MY opinion... why does it bother you so much that I said something and forgot to put 'IN MY OPINION' after it??? :D

so you didn't see jaegler's constant posts about how we're anti-american? :? dunno how you could miss them. You say it's your choice for freedom of expression... good for you... but I still fail to see what it is you're expressing?
    o.

my "constant posts?" are you fucking nuts helen? i hinted at it in ONE post. then you said you were not. then i dropped it. if your definition of "constant" is one, and a follow up post to defend myself, then i apologize. i just dont see why you and dunk are so preoccupied with what we americans do over here. if you dont care about it, why keep posting and posting and posting about it? i dont get you crazy europeans sometimes ;)

oh, and the fucking point of this whole thread was to talk about the united state's biased media....not some offhanded comment the jeagler made after the fact. you guys are nuts! love ya!

    it's a discussion board!!!!
    because we can discuss!!!!
you don't need to care about a topic at all to post continually about it!!!!
it's all just because we're on a discussion board to discuss things...no matter the topic.....no matter the cares.......and it doesn't mean anything!!!

btw - i think someone seriously needs to alert ringling bros and barnum bailey circus how arrogant and silly and out of hand insulting they are by calling their circus show 'the greatest show on earth!' how dare they! did they go and see 64,232.0023142 more shows to compare before making that proclamation...insulting countless other circuses?! someone alert the media........

of course, the media is so biased....i think they've been supporting cirque de soleil for years now.......;)

well i do get a lot of that in threads of this nature.

i dont get the idea of 'tipping'.. so i say so... and i get replies to me after that of "cheap ass scots" and things like that...

i dont get the idea of needing a gun... i say so.,.. i get told america is the freest nation in the world so shut up.

i dont get needless boasting like 'greatest nation in the world.. so i say i dont and we end up with this... a thread in which americans try and tell me its their culture and it does you no harm, so why bother?

    i bother because i can...

its a very very rare thing that an american will be on this forum who doesnt like an aspect of their culture and is prepared to say it .. probably for fear of them being labelled unpatriotic... whereas i dont care.. be it scotland or the US... if something doesnt sit right with me, i like to probe it and question why.

british/irish people will say about things in their culture that they dont particulary like... not once would they get a retort from a fellow countryman of being unpatriotic... but an american could and probably has been labelled unpatriotic on here... it was probably Commy :D but thats cos he questions a lot of things in his society.

Dream, i dont believe anyone has been harmed by bad spelling... but it 'irks' you doesnt it.... so why bother saying about it? why not just do whats being asked of me here... sit back, shut up and say nothing.

make up your mind....you quote the jeagler as giving lots of anti-american posts...so i assume you are using said comments as 'serious' debate....then you say you take little seriously.....so then, huh? don't put forth a serious argument using things you don't take seriously.

you make a declarative statement that it IS silly, there is NO reason.....people give you reasons...and yet, still not enough...you say more of the same.......so yes, parading opinion as fact, i dislike...always have. dunk should add that to the list he's compiled of things that irk me and that i debate passionately. :P it's not so much that you need to continaully add 'imo'......just not present yours or even others' opinions as something declarative, as if it *proves* it's silly, or serves no purpose/reason...b/c it doesn't. btw - chiqui clearly stated that in the post you missed. ;)

when were there any irrational tangents??? Sounds like you're a bit paranoid.

nope, just accurate. comparing flag waving to female circumcision, presuming that americans are all the same. pretty damn irrational.
I didn't do that... nor did dunk. It wasn't a good choice in comparison... but he meant there are things about other countries or cultures that we don't like... and since when is the moving train about sitting back and shutting up. There's been some debating here and that's welcome... but there's also been plenty of 'what's it to you?' and 'you obviously hate america'.

HAHAHAHA... "dunk didn't do that... but when he did it was a bad choice." Only you could type that with a straight face.

    spare me.

i have CLEARLY stated numerous times over that i think tipping is a ridiculous practice. there are many things about my country and culture that i will criticize, as do many. i don't participate in gun debates b/c i don't see much to debate.....i'm pretty anti-gun.

as to what 'riks' me dunk...i addressed that when you first posted about it....not going to post it for ya again.

this thread was meant to be about media bias.....many times people tried to bring it back to that track...but the flag-waving and god bless america took over....so sure, i weighed in numerous times.....b/c i can. and for the umpteenth time no one is saying to shut up about it, not discuss....we're actually trying to understand WHY it irks you so. i got all the bind patriotism stuff, but ya know...that's a ssuming a lot. i am not blindly patriotic, not in the least. so beyond that point....since we ARE discussing the topic, for me, the point is to gain some understanding as to 'why'.....it is so irksome. i guess i just can't imagine being so 'irked' by something harmless, that has no effect on me...whereas bad spelling adoes effect me, deeply.

i've also not asked that it be stopped... just dont get it nor the need to do it.

The problem isn't that you don't get it, the problem is that you refuse to even listen to or attempt to understand what it means to this culture. As when we tried to explain that 'God bless America' is simply a cultural idiom with as much religious meaning as Santa Clause anymore... but when we offer this explanation to help you understand what it means here, you say "no, it clearly means that Americans believe God only cares about the US and says fuck all the rest." Which is as ridiculous as me telling you that the phrase 'taking the piss' means literally that people in Ireland literally try to steal each other's urine.

and maybe to some americans, it IS the greatest country on earth. i mean, seriously, it is not a sentiment based on weights and measures. as some have said, it's like saying pearl jam is the greatest band, etc...it is based on emotion more than anything else...or so i have always thought. that's the point. when it's said, in speeches, to fellow americans...it's meant to be unifying, a rally-call, what have you.......i mean, i have not seen a president go and say 'god bless america' to a foreign crowd, etc....it's directed at americans, for americans.

ya know, as ed sings....this is not for you. ;)

so yea.....the flag waving at home, the displays, the anthems, the speeches......not for you. for us. too bad that's not OK with you.

and christ! we can take criticism, but have criticism of something that truly effects anyone! criticize the government, criticize our tipping customs, lack of universal healthcare....ya know......things that actualy impact people's lives. and hey, criticize the flag waving too...but allow the reciprocal courtesy for us to criticize the criticizm. we enjoy it, so fuck it........*waves flag* :) amazing! debating back is not being able to handle criticizm..i'll have to remember that.

i'll make a concession... if i go into a restaurant and i see an US flag, or they bless america or somewhere their promo material says "greatest steaks in the world served in the greatest country in the world" then i wont tip...

if none of the above is mentioned i'll most definitely tip and wish the waiter/waitress all the best.

    thats fair huh?
