I think the post count just reflects the threads which were transferred to this board. But what do I know.
Nice Jason Stark article on ESPN.com today about arbitration and what it could mean for the Phils, Boston and other teams.
It was good and explains why I think the Phils have a problem on their hands in a few years because of in place salary structures.
I don't think it's nearly as big a problem for the Red Sox because even if they let Youk walk, their best prospect in AAA is a slugging 1st baseman and there is no way they let Papelbon go. Of course what I think they do is trade Lowell after the 2009 season, move Youk to 3rd and call up the 1st baseman.
The Phils have a problem because Hamels is going to want to get paid and he looks around and sees Moyer making 8, Eaton 9.5 and Myers 12.5. Hamels will break the bank if he stays healthy.
The Phils are definitely in a spot, especially with Hamels. Hopefully, the organization steps up and gives him a salary at or above what his service time dictates. Although I can see them paying at or close to Cole's arbitration number for a 1 year deal this year and then worrying about a longer term deal after the season, since Cole has arbitration till 2011 or so.

That sounds about right...Im worried about the Howard AND Hamels deals...I want these guys locked up long term
First baseman Ryan Howard and left-hander Cole Hamels will be the Phillies' biggest challenges in salary arbitration, but right-hander Ryan Madson will be no pushover. Madson, a free agent after next season, is represented by Scott Boras, and already has turned down a three-year, $12 million offer, according to a major-league source. After the Phillies won the World Series, Boras compared the combination of Madson and Brad Lidge to Mariano Rivera and John Wettleland ...

Yeah, but that's all posturing on part of the agent and his client. Anybody need a ticket to the St. Patty's Day game in Clearwater? I have an extra one and looking to get rid of it - $10. PM me if need be.
Madson turned down a 3 year $12 mil offer.... I see him being traded at some point during the season. He wants closer money but won't be the closer here.

Sign Hamels, yes... but I'm not so keen on signing Howard to a long term (A-Rod type money) deal. I just don't see him being worth it.
Especially since he will be 31 when he's a free agent. He and his agent are going to try and cash in for being left in the farm system a year or two too long.

That's the same offer that Romero accepted.
There's two differences though:
Madson is a lot younger and Scott Boras is Madson's agent.
That's too funny. Might as well enjoy him this year because he'll be traded after the season.
Yeah I can see a during or post season trade coming.... and I think he may end up losing arbitration, but I haven't looked at comparable numbers yet, just a feeling I have about the numbers.

I doubt he wins too. I mean he's asking for more money than Pujols who is better than Howard offensively and defensively. But you never know what an arbitrator will decide.

howard and the phils should just agree to 16mil and be done with it.
i really hate all the "lets trade him" and "he wants too much money" talk. his numbers through the first 4 years of his career are not only great, they are fucking historical. only somewhere around 4-5 other players in the history of the game compare to him in regards to his run production--home runs and rbi's. and this game is a 140 years old or so!
this is a run producing, offensive player for the AGES gentlemen. sure he is not a good defensive first basemen. but lets not lose sight of the fact that we won the fucking world series with this guy playing first base!! its not like you cant win with him there! oh, and if it wasn't for his, again, historical (in terms of the franchise's history) september, we dont even get in the playoffs. come on people...appreciate what you have for once.

Social awareness does not equal political activism!
5/23/2011- An utter embarrassment... ticketing failures too many to list.
i really hate all the "lets trade him" and "he wants too much money" talk. his numbers through the first 4 years of his career are not only great, they are fucking historical. only somewhere around 4-5 other players in the history of the game compare to him in regards to his run production--home runs and rbi's. and this game is a 140 years old or so!
this is a run producing, offensive player for the AGES gentlemen. sure he is not a good defensive first basemen. but lets not lose sight of the fact that we won the fucking world series with this guy playing first base!! its not like you cant win with him there! oh, and if it wasn't for his, again, historical (in terms of the franchise's history) september, we dont even get in the playoffs. come on people...appreciate what you have for once.
