The Phils are usually not a big player in the winter meetings. Last year all they did was meet with Kris Benson (eventually signed him), met with Aaron Rowand, tried to trade Wes Helms, released Julio Mateo, and drafted Lincoln Holdkum and Travis Blackley in the Rule 5 draft.

But here's the preview from mlb:

On an unrelated note...well, not totally unrelated, but does anyone know of anything good going on in the city for New Year's? We were thinking McFadden's at the Ballpark, but I dunno...suggestions?

Now it looks like there's some substance behind this trade for DeRosa on the Cubs...I actually like that. This way you have a solid guy at second till Utley gets back and then you can put him out in left after that - not bad. He's hit around .290 the past few years and he put up 21 homers and 87 RBI's last year. I'd do that for giving up Happ.

Gerry Fraley of FOX Sports writes the Cardinals and Phillies indulged in some trade talks around 2:30 a.m. Supposedly Rick Ankiel was dangled to Atlanta, but the Phils were probably more interested in Ryan Ludwick:

Ryan Ludwick would be the best fit for the Phillies, but the Phils might not want to break up their bullpen and the Cardinals would want a top-flight reliever in return.

That tells me a main cog in a deal with the Cardinals would have to be Ryan Madson.

That's why I think Derosa would be a better fit. Wouldn't have to give up as much, he'd cost only 5.5 mil and he plays six positions.

You don't know what else that could cost you as well. Ludwick will cost too much. Again, I'll take Derosa. He's a solid ball player.

For a 30/100+ player? I don't think so. That's if the Phils traded Burrell for prospects.

Uh, in his five year career, Madson has had 3 great years, one mediocre year and one bad year.

Rookie year had 2.34 era as Bowa's setup man in 2004
    had a 4.14 era in 2005
They tried to make him a starter in 2006 and he had an era of 5.69 but won 11 games.
Then the last two seasons his era been 3.05 both years.

Ludwick is two years older and truly only had one good season. He put up more numbers last year than he did in the 5 partial seasons he played previously combined.

I really like DeRosa too. I went to college with him and he was a good guy back then. He passed up breaking Penn's alltime record for most passing yards after he was drafted his junior year. He was like 73 yards or so away from breaking it.

Also, Comcast had this on their blog last night:

According to the initial reports, second baseman Chase Utley’s rehabilitation from hip surgery is going well. Better yet, the arthroscopy did not find excessive damage to the labrum. The initial diagnosis and convalescence time has held true for the All-Star.

Nevertheless, there remains a strong possibility that Utley will not be ready to return to the Phillies’ lineup by Opening Day. So in order to be prepared if Utley is not ready during the first part of the 2009 season, general manager Amaro has been investigating a few contingencies just in case.

One of those fallback moves could be former Phillie prospect Nick Punto, who is in town looking for a job for next season. According to the Phillies and Punto, the two sides have had conversations. According to Punto, the two camps will reconvene again at The Bellagio.

Punto also pointed out that in addition to the Phillies, several other teams are also interested in possibly signing him to a contract for the 2009 season. Reports indicate the Mets, Pirates, Tigers and A’s are a few of the teams talking with the infielder.

Meanwhile, Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Punto isn’t the only player the team has an interest in.

“He’s versatile,” Amaro said. “He’s not the only utility guy we’re targeting.”

After leaving the Phillies with Carlos Silva in the trade that sent Eric Milton to the Phillies before the 2004 season, Punto spent the last five seasons playing for the Twins. His best season was in 2006 where he batted .290 in 135 games. In 2007 he played in a career-high 150 games, including 108 of them at third base.

Last season Punto played in 99 games (61 at shortstop) and batted .284.

And finally, it seems like Ed Wade is interested in bringing So Taguchi to the Astros.

Yeah, like I said, I'm a big fan of the Derosa move. Also, how bout the winter meetings being in Vegas? "Wanna make a deal?" "Hold on. I'm doubling down on 19, waiting on a cocktail, and the waitress keeps staring me down so it may have to wait."

I'm wouldnt be surprised if someone makes a blockbuster with it being in Vegas

I like DeRosa as well - be a good move. Inquirer story says it might be part of a 3 team trade with Peavy ending up with the Cubs.

I'm picturing a bunch of old guys sitting in the pool with drinks discussing deals.

and I'm sure Ed Wade is one of those dbags who won't hit 16 against a 10 (and other dumb blackjack moves)

Have him and Norv Turner at the same table, and you'd have the coldest table in the casino.

i can see Norv splitting tens - you know taking a good hand (team) and making it worse.

lol...I say that because one of the Sports Guys' stories in Vegas involves his buddy and Norv Turner, which people in San Diego have turned into a website...check it out here...awesome....
