Just like I thought - this season will end like 2005, and of course at the hands of the Astros. If they split they would be 3 back, and if they took 3 out of 4 they'd be 2 back and right in it. Ah well, I'm still going to the game on Tuesday for my 30th.

Why is everyone giving Larry a gift? Wasn't sucking as a team from 94-2006 gift enough? Hey Larry, as a phillies fan I just like to say FUCK YOU.

Even though you're a good player and I respect your game.

Yeah I couldn't give two fucks about his retirement. The best gift we gave him was knocking their lame-ass team out of the playoffs last year (which in turn got us knocked out, as I semi-predicted).

    300 career home runs 8-)

2nd fastest in the HISTORY of the game to get to 300 career home runs. pretty darn impressive. only in philadelphia would fans constantly criticize a player with such credentials. gotta love this town

ralph kiner was 1st in 6 less games than ryan.

andy ryan is a career .272 hitter and has a higher career average, slugging and ops than the greatest phillie of all time michael jack schmidt.

2nd base is far and away the easiest position in Baseball.

    major fail

What the heck is easier than 2nd base? Some would argue 1st base but Utley sure isn't gonna be playing there. And you have to deal with fielding tough throws from SS/3B. I dunno, I played 2nd base in high school and it was a cakewalk. A THOUSAND TIMES EASIER than shortstop or outfield.

And what the heck is this "major fail" bullshit? Agree, disagree, or whatever. But fucking elaborate.

any position up the middle is difficult. 1b, 3b, LF, RF are all much easier than 2B. Think about what a 2nd baseman has to do

1 - run into the OF to take relay throws
2 - sprint for balls down the RF foul line (especially when there's a whale playing 1B)
3 - turn the pivot on DPs...2B is conisdered much more difficult than SS doing this because your back is always turned to the runner...ie, you can't see him coming most of the time so there is a better chance of him getting into your shins/ankles
4 - you have to occasionally cover first base

second base is not easy. I played OF in high school (mostly center, but I also played the corners as an underclassman)...OF is a cakewalk. Anyone can play the corner spots. Well, except for dom brown

as his downtrend continues on this path he will be luckily to finish his career with an avg above 240

Ended up at the Valley Forge Casino on Thursday. I had never even heard of the place.

Not bad. They have $15 blackjack. I had the best BJ night of my life as I walked away with $600. I love me some blackjack.

This came up at our table multiple times throughout our session...when the dealer shows an ace, 2, or 3 and you have a 12-14 do you take a card or stay?? things got heated towards the end of the night.

well let's bring some facts into your ridiculous assertion.

ryan currently has 1099 hits in 4043 at-bats for a .272 career average.

if the plays 5 more years and averages 400 at bats (below his average but lets take some at bats away for age and injury) for 2000 more at bats to get down to a .240 average he could only get 352 hits in those 2000 at bats since 1451/6043 gives you a .240 career average/ so ryan would have to have an average over 5 years of .176. to lower his career average to .240. virutally zero chance of that happenning.

dealer ace - always take a hit. for a dealer to bust with a starting ace they need to have an ace to six under and turn over 2 cards 7 or above to bust. beating a dealer ace is one of the lowest percentages in blackjack so you have to make a really good hand to beat it.

dealer 2s and 3s are some of the most difficult decisions in blackjack.

    - hit 12 against a 2 (i do and it never fucking works but supposedly you are supposed to).
    - supposedly you are to hit 13 against a 2 but i never do.
    - you should hit a 12 against a 3 as well but it's not something i do all the time. that is one i play more by feel and what the other people at the table are like.
    - never hit a 14 against a 2 or 3.

I kept hitting my 12's and 13's and these dipshits that passed thru our table around 2 AM were giving me all kinds of shit. I was drunk by that point and I just didn't want to listen to them. I asked them how they were doing tonight and they all said shitty. then I showed them my stacks of chips and told them to lick my balls. they stopped serving beer at 2, so this is right around the time we left.

nothing worse than when the dealer shows an ace. I was busting them up on 12's and 13's though. one of my friends was calling me a retarded genius

I don''t really like casinos, but I do enjoy blackjack.

another thing I was doing that I took shit for was doubling down every time the dealer had a six showing and I had anything less than 12. I could have a two and three and I'm doubling against her six (if not splitting that type of hand...I'm not even sure if you can split two diff card numbers like a 2 and 3)
  • Johnny AbruzzoJohnny Abruzzo Philly Posts: 11,962
Yeah, hit a 12 against a 2 or 3, stay on 13. These are borderline cases though. Playing on feel wouldn't be a horrible thing to do. Gotta hit on anything up to 16 against an ace. $15 blackjack sounds good. I hate dipshits who think they know all the "rules" when they really don't. I sit there and say "I'm an actuary, and you don't even understand what that is and you certainly don't understand what's going on here at this table."

Team gets to 3 games back Friday night (still a long shot). I pay for my playoff tixx Saturday morning. Team tanks rest of the weekend. Ain't life a bitch.

Can only split two of the same card.

    Never split 10's (or 5's I'm pretty sure). Always split aces & 8's. Split 7's against 2 through 7. Split 2's & 3's against 4, 5 & 6 I think - starts to get confusing. Split 9's against something weird like 7 & 9, maybe. I have no idea when you might want to split 4's.

You're allowed to bring a cheat sheet to the blackjack table, and you can use it to shut up the morons who don't know what they're doing.
