Eskin out as afternoon anchor at WIP
    Published: Monday, August 15, 2011

    Tweet 0diggsdigg 0By TIMOTHY LOGUE

Whether by choice or by shove, it appears legendary WIP sports talker Howard Eskin will soon be gone from the all-important 3-7 p.m. time slot.

Eskin, 57, revered by his fans as "King," will reportedly continue working with the station as a sideline reporter and consultant.

Multiple sources confirmed that Anthony Gargano, currently paired with Havertown’s Glen Macnow from 10-3, is expected to slide into Eskin’s spot. It was unclear Monday afternoon whether Macnow would be a part of the show or what would become of Eskin’s co-host, former Eagles linebacker Ike Reese.

Eskin was on air at the time of this report and Gargano could not be reached for comment. “I’ve got an announcement coming up which is important to me,” Eskin told his listeners at 4:40 p.m.

“It was time,” Eskin told listeners minutes ago. “I approached our program director Andy Bloom and we agreed on a new contract that would give me the freedom to pursue some of the national opportunities that I have been able to dabble in over the last couple years while still having a role here at WIP. So after Sept. 2nd I will be giving up the 3-7 p.m. shift but will still continue as part of WIP, as part of the Eagles broadcast, along with the pregame shows and other shows and projects.”

Eskin got choked up at the end of what sounded like a prepared statement.

“You have often heard me say, ‘I’ve never had a bad day in my life,’ and I mean it,” he said as his voice started to crack. “This really another great day in a terrific streak and I’m just starting a new chapter.”

Known for his fur coats, natty attire, enduring relationship with Sixers legend Charles Bakley and penchant for telling disagreeable callers to “beat it,” Eskin is one of WIP’s highest-paid and controversial employees.

Once the king of the afternoon drive, Eskin now plays second fiddle to Mike Missanelli at 97.5 The Fanatic, Philadelphia’s ESPN affiliate. Missaneli was fired from WIP in 2003.

Sources said ratings are the main reason for the Eskin move. His chummy relationship with the Eagles has also been a point of contention with some at the station.

    Eskin’s contract runs through 2011.

It appears there will be no changes to the WIP Morning Show, which features Angelo Cataldi, Rhea Hughes, Al Morganti and Keith Jones. WIP’s highest-paid jock, Cataldi has three years remaining on his contract with an option for a fourth.

None of us think he's a perfect player, and everyone agrees he's overpaid. (but not nearly as overpaid as AJ Burnett, Joe Blanton, Brad Lidge, Danys Baez, Alex Rodriguez...) But I just don't think it's the same team without him. And he is hitting over .300 with RISP. He's doing his job. What's his job? Get RBI's. That's just how it is dude, don't know what to tell ya.

Ugh. Here we go. I say the same thing every time this argument comes up, every 3 days or whatever it is.

I'm not getting into it again. I don't completely disagree.

no you're clearly not getting into it again.

Maybe you guys are right about him signing before he becomes a FA, shoulders are scary. Even if it's nothing, I'm sure this will make him think twice about waiting it out

I was there friday as well. there were a lot of cheesedick anti-werth signs too. morons.

also, glen macknow is a tool too. supposed to be sports radio, not food and movie radio.

jody mac is the man though. I used to listen to him all the time when 950 went on air (I remember him when he was on 660 up in NYC -- that is a real sports station).

Just saw Halladay at Bonefish Grill in Newtown Square. We were sitting at a high top table in the bar area. The guys sitting at the end of our table work there and said he's there all the time.

I had a plan to kidnap one of his sons, but the wife wouldn't let it happen. damn her

but jodi knows his shit more than anyone else on radio. him and macnow were great together back in the day.

Hats off to Thome. If you take away the steroid users (Bonds, Sosa, and A-Rod), then Thome is 5th all-time in MLB history behind just Aaron, Ruth, Mayes, and Griffey Jr.

This was my first thought Though it would be really tough since we would literally be the last team to get a shot at claiming/trading for him.

Cool. I ran in to Halladay at the Wawa in Media last year. He grabbed a coffee. It was funny to see his sweet ass BMW parked next to my beat-up Chevy Cavalier.

Phillies sign a top draft pick
The Phillies announced Tuesday they've signed shortstop Roman Quinn, their second-round selection in the June draft - No. 66 overall.

The Phillies had until midnight Monday to sign their draft picks. Earlier, they announced the signing of outfielder Larry Greene, who was the No. 39 pick overall.

Quinn, 18, is a switch hitter who batted .385 with a .610 on-base percentage at Port St. Joe's High School in Florida. Overall, the Phillies signed 30 of their 50 draft picks, including nine of their first 10 selections.

    Skip the rest of August.

No structural damage. But for precautionary reasons they will skip his next start. Good move.

6-man rotation for a couple weeks is what I foresee.

I've gotten bombed at that sports bar a few times. Not a bad spot to watch games

I might have to start going to get my hair cut there too. And I see more meals at bonefish...especially on phils off days

figures I have tix for that game. Hopefully they move oswalt up a day (which would really be his regular day because of the back to back off days) so I'm not stuck with kendrick

EDIT: oswalt friday, kendrick saturday. very nice

I'm reading about the signings now. Sounds like they went overslot for a few guys. That's awesome and not normally their style.

They signed a 6'6 LHP that they took in the 27th round. Apparently he throws fire

The 5th rounder, Mitch Walding...got 800K. Apparently he was a tough sign too. I'll check out BA and post some stuff

    yikes

the Astros have a chance to hit big on outfielder Domingo Santana, the fourth piece they got as the player to be named later in the Hunter Pence deal. Santana was only hitting .269/.345/.434 at Class A Lakewood. But he was also seventh in the South Atlantic League in doubles (29). He just turned 19 this month. And scouts gush about his raw skills.

"This guy has a chance to be Vlad Guerrero," one scout said. "He's still crude right now. But he has the highest ceiling imaginable. You put him in there with the other guys they got, and this has a chance to be like the [Bartolo] Colon deal was for Cleveland." To refresh your memory, the Indians got back Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee and Brandon Phillips -- whoever they are -- when they shipped Colon to Montreal in 2002.

just realized phils feed is on MLB Network. They just showed the statue. Looks pretty awesome.

I still don't understand why the phillies didn't make something like that happen. Kinda weak a fan had to initiate and pay for the project. I'm glad something was done
