That's neither here nor there. This game was decided by two really bad pitches to the same batter. Carpenter I don't think would've gotten into this game if they had a 2 run lead going into the 8th.

I still don't get that mentality... why does Hamels have to start at all against the Mets during the season??? I can see if it is the last week of the season and the teams are close but to shuffle the rotation just so your ace can start against a rival during the season is stupid. I'd rather him start against the Cubs and give us a nice kick off to a tough series.

are you freakin' kidding me? Does Tony LaRussa or Joe Torre shuffle their rotation? of course they do - so you would rather have Kyle Kendrick start against Johan Santana than Cole Hamels? Again I'm not just talking about this 2 game set - not ALL year has he started against them in what 15 games now. It's stupid and makes absolutely no sense to have your best pitcher face your biggest threat to the division title - a team you've been chasing for the past month.

Hamels started against the mets in april. This series will let us know if we belong in the playoffs. And if Rich Harden pitches another gem against us pat gillick and the rest of the front office should run and hide for not going after him. keep the faith,LETS GO PHILLIES!

Dude, look at this way. Nothing is fucked here (lebowski), and now you have to play a 4 game series against the team with the best record in the majors. I would definitely like to have Hamel tonight now looking at it. Dempster I think has lost only two games at home this year. I would definitely want our ace out there tonight.

The Mets. I knew they were gonna split, but we're not the one's who gave up a SEVEN RUN LEAD. Giving up seven of anything is pretty popular with you guys isn't - whether it be runs or games.....Let's talk on September 29th again, and we'll see what the deal is. That bullpen of yours I mean bound to hold up right?? Hahahaha.

Don't worry, the Mets will be on the golf course before the Phils.

Not sure why everyone was so wrapped up in this series ?

1/2 game lead at this point means nothing

I'm actually starting to feel the Mets' fans pain of having an unreliable bullpen...

Durbin was rock solid in the 1st half, i think the innings are catching up with him, which I don't get since he was a starter in Detroit...

Can't believe we let that one slip away... hopefully we bounce back strong today in the battle of the A's starters.

    Go Phils!!

yeah well since ole Charlie used 3 pitchers in the 8th they probably aren't available for the next two days (this is sarcasm people).

oh and it's time for our pitchers to start knocking someone down - after Ramirez's home run the next guy should have been plunked - watch and stare a bit longer Aramis.

and I know Wrigley is a shrine and all but you could invest in some fucking lights? how dark is that ballpark. Even in High-Def you could barely see the names on the players backs and the people in the stands.

Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to send Matt Stairs to the Phillies for a minor leaguer to be named later.

    Stairs
The trade, first reported by FOXSports.com, gives the Phillies a left-handed bat off the bench to replace the injured Geoff Jenkins.

Stairs, reached by phone Friday at a hotel in Tampa, declined to confirm that he was going to the Phillies.

"All I was told was, I'm being traded to some team, and to sit tight until they get the deal done,'' he told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.

The Phillies have had discussions about several left-handed hitters in the last few days -- primarily Stairs, Minnesota's Mike Lamb and Atlanta's Mark Kotsay, who was just dealt to Boston. Jenkins injured a hip flexor this week and figures to be out for most, if not all, of the rest of the regular season.

Just heard that Cole needs to buck up a little more. I sometimes feel he is worried too much about his next contract then the current season. I understand not killing a guy who leads the nl in innings already, but a true ace (gamer) would never tell u to take him out after the last game agianst the muts. Our bullpen has been sorta sketchy as of late. I just wanna see cole get like myers did a coulple of starts ago when charlie took him out.

I guess Stairs is a decent left-handed bat off the bench... hey, he's hitting .450 at CBP.

Is Fuentes suspended? I thought they put him on the bereavement list because of a death in the family.

Hahahaha, I hope I never see Hamels act like Myers. Nah, you can't keep drilling Hamels with all these innings though. Especially with his arm & back problems. I think he's consistently been in the top 3 in innings pitched every year. It's not Hamels' fault they lossed. The problem was putting in Madson who's does nothing more than pad his stats & is a mop-up pitcher. Any time he goes into a game with a 3 game lead or deficit he makes things worse. I would've never have turned to him in that spot. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I would've put Condrey in over Madson. Though I would've gone right with Durbin. And Durbin isn't at fault either. 2 pitches into the inning they asked him to warm up, and then 2 pitches later they brought him in. There's no way he was loose. Madson was the fuck up here, along with Manuel on making that decision. But, we're only down one game and I don't think the Mets can keep it up. I just wanna split this series and get the fuck out of Dodge.

I think Cole is a stud and even said i know he logs a ton of innings but a True ace would never say take me out in a playoff race. i'm sorry im not blaming cole for the loss but cole just seems like he has had another agenda and it's all steeming back to him not gettn a long term deal this past offseason. He wouldn't move up his slot after the allstar break and he could have said i wanna pitch aginst the muts. I understand myers has his problems and handled the manuel pulling him thing wrong ,but at least he wanted to be in there. When i was younger dead arm or not there was no way in hell i was leaving that mound inless my coach came out there and got me.

That's all well and good. He went way over his pitch count mark(something like 110+ i think? And the most he's ever thrown is like 125). Yes, back in the day that didn't mean anything, but now they groom these guys this way and it's ridiculous in my eyes. But it does mean something. Anyway, he went 7 innings and looked nasty. You should be able to count on your bullpen for ONE LOUSY INNING of work. Then of course it's wrapped up in the 9th with Lidge.

How did Cole take himself out of a playoff race??? He pitched 7 innings and left with a 3 run lead. I'd rather have him say I'm done then go out there and serve up base hit after base hit or blow out his arm.

agreed. not sure how anyone is faulting cole on this.

i feel bad for him... it's almost comical how they manage to lose games where he is pitching. if it's not the offense not showing up it's the bullpen....

Good points all around. Like I said, you should be able to expect your bullpen to get through one friggin inning.

3 outs is all they needed to get to Lidge

The last few times Cole has thrown over a hundred pitches the next few starts he's gotten shelled

I dont have a problem with going to the bullpen...I would have taken Madson out after the first batter HR'd
