it's not about a magic number to me. Its about grooming good players through the farm system, drafting well, and signing free agents when necessary... spending big bucks doesn't guarantee you anything.

Luxury tax kicks in at $155 mil

I didn't say that either but it does give you a chance and some flexibility... baseball is a long season and you always need alittle luck or to get hot at the night time to win a championship.

Plus I don't think the Phils farm system is that well off and may never be as long as they strictly stick to MLB's signing bonus guidelines for draft picks.

That's a huge jump... I think between arbitration and a couple other things they actually hit 105 this year.

03 was the last year at the Vet.

The payroll numbers are at the start of the season and don't take into account player performance bonuses and in season trades.

:: shakes head :: last time I checked a championship team was just that a team... not two or three great players with some mediocre talent around them. And one pitcher can only pitch once or so a week.... the farm system has had bright spots but not as many for where they have been selecting players.

I love how everyone is talking about how Howard is carrying this team now and he should be MVP. But everyone forgets that Utley and Burrell carried this team through the beginning of the season and the Phils would be 10 games back if it wasn't for their early season play.

All I know is, and I don't care if MVP has nothing to do with team performance, but if you have 2 MVP's and cannot win ONE PLAYOFF GAME. That's pathetic.
All I'm askin for is one stinkin playoff win at home so I can be there for it.

The last MVP to be on a World Series champion winning team was Kirk Gibson in 1988. Having MVPs is nice, but a ring would be better.

Why didn't we bring Happ back up after the all-star break? We are 3-0 in his starts. At a minimum, we should have let him have 2 or 3 starts after the break to see what he could do.

I'm happy to see Howard bringing it on at this point in the season, but I have to agree with Chromiam here.

And I still don't think Howard is worth 10 mil. I think the 7 mil the Phillies offered was a sufficient offer.

But put all that aside and just get to the post season dammit!!

Putting up over 40/120 the past three seasons is worth more than 7 mil.

you are insane. realistically, if he were on the open market, he'd be making 18-20M per season. 10M is a fucking bargain for one of the most prolific home run hitters EVER at this point in his career. fucking pat burrell makes 17M this year!

I don't think Burrell made that much this year but his contract I think averages out to like 16/year.

I don't think Burrell made that much this year but his contract I think averages out to like 16/year.

yea but i remember hearing his last year ballooned up to 17m. i think he made 14 m last year and less the year's before that. so the average very well could be in the 16m range
