  • didn't get a run in this weekend because the weather was ppppooooop!

saturday I just did a 3.5 mile run on the treadmill, 30 minutes on the elliptical, and some abs/core stuff and deadlifts. didn't work out yesterday :(.

I have to work out tonight, which I generally hate, so I'm not sure what I'm going to do. my body can't take an intense work out late in the day. maybe I'll just do another hour of cardio or something.

4 miles treadmill. When I felt that my running was natural I went with it, and did not get overwhelmed by the coolness of finally feeling that way :)

yeah. T ride, shower, changing, etc.

the crazy thing is until the end of the month I belong to another gym that's closer, and I thought about going there but I was like "nah I want to lift" (you can't get any lifting done at this closer gym) but then I didn't have time to anyway!

    oh well live and learn...

Well, my workouts have gone to hell the last few days. We have had terrible, terrible weather. Ice everywhere, breaking trees, power lines and covering the roads. So I haven't ran since my race on Saturday. I haven't been to the gym because I have to cross the Ohio River to get to work and/or the gym. One of the bridges was closed and the other is the interstate bridge with lots of traffic so I was fearful to cross it with the ice. I didn't want to get slammed by a semi. We didn't have power Tuesday night, blah, blah, blah. Anyway, the temps are supposed to get up to 49 or so today so maybe the ice will melt enough for me to get out early evening to run. However, I did some strengthening at home the last couple of days and got on the bike (trainer) too.

Thanks! I like being an inspiration! It fits too, since I am probably older than most people that post in this thread.

But you should give yourself some credit. You are working hard on the Cherry Blossom and sticking with it...... even on days that you don't really want to get out there! That is what it takes and it seems as if you have "got what it takes." Keep on running.

Now I am going to tell a story about one of the local "inspirations." Joe is 82 years old. His daughter and I were college room-mates way back when. He didn't start running till he was in his 50's probably. And he ran and ran and ran. Finally his knees gave out so he started bike riding. He rode and rode and rode. In his 70's I had a hard time keeping up with him on flat rides. He doesn't ride on the road as much anymore - mostly on rails to trails. He was featured on a local news program a couple of weeks ago. I think he rides 4-5 days per week. The longest ride is 40 something miles and the shorter ones 20 or so. I hear so many people say, "I want to be like Joe." That is what I am working towards!!!! :)

The plan was 2 miles. At 1.9 miles this song comes on my shuffle:

I knew right then and there I was running a little more than 2 miles. I ran about 2.25.

    My question:

How do you get lats like the ones that The Diamond One (David Lee Roth) is boasting here?

Great running song! Makes you feel like you can run forever! Combine that with the runner's high and it is awesome! Surely no drugs can do that!

    oo burning gluts :)
I have like gluts of steal. they're never sore no matter how hard I work them. also why I'm a maniac on a bike. Even out of shape, my glutes remain strong.

ugh still not happy about lower body tonight. It will include:

    30-45 minutes running or elliptical
    squats/jump squats
twisting lunges/wall squats with a swiss ball and bicep curls
    side lunges/stationary lunges
    calf raises/mountain climbers
    abducters/aductors

...I feel like I'm missing something...

Looks ok, but have you been doing cardio before lifting? If so, I'd definitely reverse that, and do it after you lift. You'll burn more fat that way typically.

today...tough run after yesterday's chocolate fest...
    2 miles running...getting a tad easier
    10 min. bike

    this past wednesday...
shoveled snow/slush for 4 hours...gotta count for something cause yesterday was all day painful!
I love to turn you on

    well here is thing...

I go back and forth on this one. right now, cardio before lifting seems to be working out better. especially for lower body because I work my legs so hard while lifting I can barely walk let around run after (like it's difficult to stand). But yeah I have heard that lifting first is better, but when I REALLY got in shape I was doing cardio first (I used to sprint intervals before lifting, but it's too hard now). for some reason it's just feeling better now to do cardio first. it's also confusing because going back to a simple cardio/strength work out is very weird. I used to do a more wholistic cross training work out. again, I can't do it anymore :(.

oh and also, if you work out in the morning on an empty stomach you're supposedly supposed to do cardio first. As I usually work out in the morning, I'm probably just in that habit when I work out at night.

I should've mentioned this before, but it's not so much that it's better to do cardio after lifting...it's more the fact that it's bad to do cardio BEFORE lifting. The reason you don't want to do cardio before lifting is because you deplete the glycogen from your muscles with cardio...then when you go to lift after, you're very likely to burn muscle in the process.

Doing fasted cardio first thing in the morning is ok, but you definitely never wanna lift on an empty stomach. You'd lose muscle that way for sure, and your metabolism would go way down.

If it feels better doing the cardio before lifting, at least have a quick meal right after the cardio that has lots of fast-absorbing protein and carbs. Like a whey shake and some Gatorade.

I say it counts for something. If I shoveled snow for 4 hours I would think I deserved some chocolate cake, and ice cream, and cheese doodles, and chocolate chip cookies, and hot chocolate, and apple crisp and . . .

hmmm this is sort of the opposite of what I've been taught. I've always learned that you lift first to run down the glycogen in your muscles, and then you're hungry/tired when you do cardio, so if you are working out at night you would do this to mimic doing cardio on an empty stomach, which burns more fat. So really the only important thing is to do cardio while you have no sugar in your system (see body sculpting bible for women).

Nahhhh...I'm a girl dude, I'm trying to gain lean muscle, not mass (and I can build mass incredibly easily). It's a completely stupid idea for me to be having whey shakes or gaterade while working out. Way high in calories. I don't need that. the only time I go near gaterade is before/after a race 12k or over. I used to drink whey shakes for breakfast, but they contributed to me gaining 40 lbs.

Yeah, if you lift or do cardio, you run down the glycogen. So if you're glycogen-depleted and doing cardio, you'll probably burn mostly stored body fat. But if you lift while glycogen-depleted, you'll probably burn mostly lean tissue. Lifting is anerobic, not aerobic like cardio.

I'm not recommending the quick meal in between because I think you'll gain more mass if you have it. I'm recommending it because I think you'll LOSE lean tissue if you DON'T have it. If it's properly-portioned, you won't put on weight.

yea...wednesday sucked big time. had i gone out an hour earlier when it was just sleeting, the snowblower would have done some help. but no, i had to wait and feed the kids breakfast. damn near killed meself out there!

I get what you are saying but 1) I think I really have to be careful NOT to put on mass 2) is 30 minutes of cardio really going to be THAT detrimental to muscle tissue? I mean 30 minutes on the treadmill is like nothing. I mean I can see your point if you talking like a 12k beforehand...

I've been to some really good trainers...at one point I was trained for like 6 months and he had me doing sprint intervals before I did anything else, and he never mentioned eating anything after...

I'm not like trying to be a bitch, btw, I'm just arguing the point because I am taking you seriously so I'm trying to kind of figure it out.

It was great running weather today. 3 miles . . . 3 torturous miles! Ohmygawd, can I run any slower. Actually, the first couple miles weren't that bad, but at about mile 2 I thought I would make a great lava lamp - constantly moving, slow, blobbous, and mysterious :)

My twin's husband came home early to make sure to give me enough time to run before he had to leave again (I'm at their house on Fridays so an adult is home when they aren't) Anyway, he comes in, says he made sure to get home in time, laughs at me, and says "You have no excuse!" hahahahahahahahahaha :D

Afterwards, when I came into the house, their little boston terrier is all set to play ball with me. That's a great way to relax arm muscles after a run. I just threw the ball and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, then switched arms, and again, and again, and again, and again. Little guy has stamina!

Well, I got my long run in, but it wasn't as long as it should have been. Planned on doing 16 or so. Ended up at about 13.5. Today was a glum, dark, dreary day, accompanied by a damp chill that went to the bone even though it was high 30's and low 40's.

However, like SteveDunne I did some other stuff, like dragging limbs and branches around trying to clear a path after the disastrous ice storm on Monday & Tuesday.
