In warmer weather I do (I run - everything else bores me so I go with what I know I'll do consistantly), but I have slacked on the cardio since summer 2006.

I do circuits/minimal rest period during lifting, so I get some cardio in while lifting through that. My heart rate is up during much of it. It's not enough to replace a great cardio workout like running, though.

When it warms, I'll take the dog running and get the cardio piece I'm missing. I'm good on the lifting and decent on the diet.....on that alone, I'm down to 167lbs, and I'm 6' tall.

dude what? i weighed 167 at the start of 7th grade! I'm also about 6 foot...maybe 5 11'. i won't even post my current weight, but grab a couple 45 lb plates and get on the scale and we'll start talking. :D

I gotta get some weights in before running. only way i can do it.

ummm, yeah it is. we do drills in the middle of kickboxing and after three minutes of jumping rope my heart is pounding out of my chest.

I did three, five minute stretches with a 60 second break between them.
    Yea it was tough.

Oh yea, I forgot. I hit the double end bag for only two rounds today also.
    That is a good workout

    I hate jumping rope

The worst was jumping over soccer balls in practice. Nothing worse then getting tired and landing on the ball with cleats on  It's a quick way to land right on your ass :D

Man, I'm so not inspired to run. I didn't run last week because I was at a conference, and I'm in a rut. I'll get out, but I'm in it for a while.

I think that's considered to be better for you anyway. I can't imagine going running and then lifting right after.

I'm just usually too tired after lifting to run, especially after lower body. I used to lift first, but I would never run after, all I could do was 30 minutes on the elliptical.
  • fanch do you lift before running/aerobic or lift after?
Yeah, don't run then lift right after unless you have a quick meal in between. One of the worst things you can do is lift while glycogen-depleted. Do that for 3 weeks or so, and you'll probably see muscle loss. But do it the other way around (lift then run), and you'll see fat loss.

I knew there was a reason, but just didn't know what it was. Thanks dude!

And, this is all convenient because lifting after running would be disasterous, pride-wise. :)

The New Years Resolution have all fallen off by now and we have snow on the ground today, so the gym will be empty today. Anyone who goes today is a warrior!!

I have not been motivated either. I blame it on the weather. We have had so few days of sunshine this month and it gets to me. I have S.A.D. (season affect disorder) - self diagnosed. I have been running, but have not done the distance I need to do. The weather is supposed to warm up this weekend which will help. Maybe we will get a little sunshine too.

Jumping rope, now we're talking my language..and please stop referring to it as 'skipping rope,' thanks. People usually get intimitated, frustrated and bored with jumping rope and thus don't practice enough to significantly increase stamina. But really if you can run for 30 minutes/3 miles you shouldn't have a problem jumping rope continuously..

People make the mistake of jumping way too high and swinging their arms all about. It's important to jump only high enough to clear the rope while keeping your arms low, swinging the rope primarily with your wrists. I also do it barefoot to further minimize impact on knees and to build/maintain strong bone structure. Also, don't jump rope on concrete because it will eventually fuck you up big time..

all of this sounds great, but seriously, how do you guys manage to run after lifting? my legs just like buckle under, and I'm usually starving by that point. After lifting for an hour or so, not only do I not have the strength in my legs to run, but I'm just too tired/hungry.

Something that gives a little-like a wood floor, tennis court, field track, gym mat. Of course if you're in a boxing gym you can jump rope within the ring..

An hour or so? Try breaking it down to two body parts 15-20 minute per (30-40 minutes total). Then run/cardio for 30 minutes..Of course it will be harder on the days you do lower body, but it sounds like you may be over doing it if your legs are 'buckling' under..

I have to do all my lower body parts in one work out (and same for upper) because I can only lift about 3 days a week on average- I have to run distance the other days. Plus, the point is to get tired, the more body parts you do, the harder it is to do the others. It takes me roughly 45 minutes I think, i'm not sure I never really time the entire workout altogether.

Well first of all, I don't run because I don't think it's worth the stress on my joints...I use a stationary bike. And second, I get up early to do cardio, then lift in the evening. I'm just saying if you HAVE to cram both lifting and cardio into the same time slot, it's better to do the cardio second. Ideally though, you want to split them up throughout the day.
  • Saturnal wrote:

that's not exactly true...ideally you should work out twice a day, but you should do one "full" work out and one smaller, cardio-based work out.

Look, I'm just saying it's better to split up cardio and lifting into separate sessions rather than do them one right after the other. If you wanna get into what is literally "ideal", then what both of us said isn't exactly true...there's no such thing as ideal when it comes to this stuff.

I have been jumping rope for years now. I prefer it over running.
I used to box for a few years and I still stick with the boxing workout. I love it. I have been slacking the past month but I really love it.

O lord. abysmal today for first day back...

    ran about 1.25 miles
    bike 10 minutes
    light naut lifting (back)

    (talking to self...)

You need to get your fat ass outta gear and get this going. Get this done jackass. If you don't you will blow it just like you did last year, the year before that, and the year before that. You were in top shape once a long time ago. Get it back. Your presumed athletic ability is long gone. Get it back before you die. You were once fast, strong, fit. Get it back. You owe it to your kids.
I love to turn you on

2 miles. I haven't run in over 2 weeks, and it was pretty cool. I listened to In the End about 3 time, and PJ's In my Tree among others. I just hope I don't get swept at the Cherry Blossom Run. Of course, we'll see when we get there. No matter what I'm having cake afterwards. If I'm really on the ball it would cake I bake :D

From one of those people who was always last or second to last during the runs during gym in elementary school, junior high school, and high school . . .

You can do it you can do it you can do it you can do it . . . I can, too!
