  • let's not get carried away here. The only good trade the Sox have made in the past few years was while Theo was ina gorilla suit following PJ around the world. How much did the Wonderboy pay Gagne this year? About $7 mil for 2 months of sucking?

yeah the Nomar trade didn't work out either.

I guess the Evil Empire forgets about the Red Sox picking up Dave Roberts for a minor leaguer as well. He might have had a little bit of an impact in the 04 post season. ;)

Only team to be in the playoffs in 2006 and 2007 is an afterthought? That's not even getting into the fact that they have been in the playoffs every year since 1995. But hey, you do have that impressive 1 year streak of winning the division

I said in the last few years, not ever. You're right though, when Arizona gave away Schilling (and his bottle of ketchup) for a bag of balls, Theo was there to make that trade

And Cashman, Georgie Calzone, Mister Hankey and Shallow Hal were not. But they did get Randy Johnson from the D'backs...how'd that work out for them?

Yea 1 year winning the division and 2 World Series titles since that trade was made. Are you going to the Yanks' first round playoff loss parade for the 3rd year in a row?

Jury's still out. Depends on how Ross Ohlendorf pitches in the next few years

LOL That is priceless. The Sox true luxury with money is the ability to overcome free agent mistakes, the Drew performance would have sunk most teams. at least half of baseball could spend over 100 million. They don't. Don't blame the Sox for that. Revenue is over 6 Billion in this game.

Anyways, despite my hatred for the man at least George always spent what was needed to field the team he wanted. (whether or not that was a good team was the question and the problem)

Isn't that the pot calling the kettle black when the Yanks payroll is currently around 70 million more than the Red Sox and they have the highest paid C, SS, 3B, Closer, DH and Rf in all of baseball - not to mention the 26 million dollar left handed hitting platoon of Damon and Matsui in LF.

Now that is funny coming from a Yank's fan.
The Sox brass just knows how to spend better than the Yanks brass.

well, I can't argue with that. What the fuck were they thinking? he's the worst pitcher I've evers een, and I've seen some bad ones. There's a good chance that the Sox payroll will surpass the Yanks in 2009, when Mussina, Giambi Pavano and Abrue come off the books. That's $60 mil right there. If this Santana deal happens and the Sox give him $25 mil per year, and re-sign Manny, it could very well happen.

Obviously it's way too early to tell especially with the Yanks having to sign Cano and Wang to big deals next year and the Sox the same with Papelbon and Youklis because all would be arbitration eligible.

The Sox payroll with Santana this year would be about 140-145 mil. If Santana gets 23 million or so add an extra ten to take it in the 150-155 mil range. But the Sox have about 35 mil in expiring contracts this year even if they bring Manny back and if they don't they have an extra 20 million off the payroll. It would be hard for the Sox payroll to jump ahead of the Yanks in the near future.

It could, though I'd be willing to bet in 2009 those 4 salaries are replaced by at least as many dollars committed to other players by the Yanks.

If the Sox ever outspend the Yanks, the NY press will be all over the Yanks for failing to attempt to compete with their fiercest rival, even if the Yanks are instead spending more wisely and fielding a team of young talent like the early days of Jeter/Posada/Rivera/Williams. Such is life in the NY media market.

  • Cashman at least seems to be immune to the press. I don't know about Hank. The only big name free agent I see them going after for 2009 is Teixiera. And maybe an outfielder or 2
  • The Yanks have an old team, and until the farm starts pushing new blood they're kinda stuck. Only Cabrera and Cano are young, pretty much the rest of the team is somewhere between 32 and 36, so they'll need more than just 1 or 2 players soon.

SI.com's Jon Heyman believes the Red Sox will enhance their offer for Johan Santana on Tuesday afternoon in order to get a deal done.
Perhaps that means one more prospect will go the other way. First baseman Lars Anderson, right-hander Michael Bowden and outfielder Ryan Kalish would have to be at the top of Minnesota's list if it's going to be a 5-for-1 deal. They're not expected to give the Twins both Jon Lester and Jacoby Ellsbury. Dec. 4 - 12:52 pm et

Wouldn't be the first time. Frank Viola was dealt from the Twins for 5 players to the Mets in 1989 and the Mets let him walk away two years later as a free agent. Not saying I like 5 for 1 but it's not unprecedented.

The Phillies also made a 5 for 1 trade for Von Hayes in 1982. One of the 5 the Phils gave up was the ageless Julio Franco.

Aside from pettitte, every SP in the Yankees rotation is under 27. their 3-5 SP's are all 22 or under. They also have a very promising CF down on the farm
