I'm not a Sox hater - at all - but once again I'm struck by how the big $$ teams can eat their mistakes and the small $$ clubs are stuck. Makes being a GM a LOT harder. If I had known then what I know now...

Jason Bay rejects Sox offer of 4 year 60 million he's seeking a 5 year deal. Mets offering 4 year 65 million with Angels and the Mariners showing interest.
So where do the Sox go from here, I don't he's worth 15 million a year but what do I know and who can replaced @ what price???

Sure I don't think so either, but if they want a productive hitter then they have to pay. It's either going to Bay or Holliday, OR we are going to have to trade the farm to get someone in those guys class.
I respect the Sox choice to place a value on a guy and then stick to their guns, I just don't see us competing with the Yankees without two more bats and a couple more arms. Anyway you cut it we are going to have to pay to keep up with the Yanks. $ or A prospects. :x0 -
Is there any good news?
They HAVE to put a cap on these salaries!!! It's just ridiculous the amounts of money these players are getting paid!!! :wtf:  :wtf:

Did you know that major league players are given road meal money of a daily allowance of $106. What i don't know is....... is that per game which equals $8,586 or per day?? If it's per day it could be near $15,000 this is outside of their salary.
Amazing huh

It's funny how baseball and I'm sure other sports have changed so much over the years. Athletes had to work on the off season. Some of the athletes these days in some cases, have to take dangerous drugs to enhance their playing performance, just to try and break the records of those earlier years in the sport...

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/1052 ... deal-close?
Source: Lackey has BoSox physical; deal close?
Free-agent right-hander John Lackey underwent a physical Monday with the Red Sox, an indication that he is close to an agreement with the team, according to a major-league source.
The deal is expected to be similar to the five-year, $82.5 million contract that the Yankees awarded free-agent right-hander A.J. Burnett last winter.
The Red Sox generally do not like to award five-year contracts, which is one of the sticking points in their negotiations with free-agent left fielder Jason Bay. It is not known whether they would guarantee Lackey five years, or award him a three- or four-year deal with options.
The signing of Lackey would represent the Red Sox's second major move of the offseason; the team earlier signed free-agent shortstop Marco Scutaro to a two-year, $12 million contract."You're one of the few Red Sox fans I don't mind." - Newch91
"I don't believe in damn curses. Wake up the damn Bambino and have me face him. Maybe I'll drill him in the ass." --- Pedro Martinez0 -
CONTINUED ...
The Sox still need to address left field and their corner-infield positions. A major investment in Lackey would indicate that they might not spend heavily on Matt Holliday to replace Bay, perhaps going with a platoon of Mike Cameron and Jeremy Hermida in left.
They also could sign free agent Adrian Beltre to play third if they complete a trade of Mike Lowell to the Rangers, or sign first baseman Nick Johnson and move first baseman Kevin Youkilis to third.
Bay's agent, Joe Urbon, said Saturday that his client was prepared to "move on" due to a difference of opinion with the Red Sox on what he should be command as a free agent.
The Sox's move on Lackey appears to be an aggressive response to Bay's position — and their signing of him would be a devastating blow to the Angels, who earlier this offseason lost free-agent third baseman Chone Figgins to the Mariners.
The Angels and Phillies are the front-runners in trade discussions for Blue Jays right-hander Roy Halladay, according to major-league sources. Another possibility for the Angels would be a trade for Braves right-hander Derek Lowe.
Lackey, 31, is considered the top starting pitcher on the free-agent market. He was 102-71 with a 3.81 career ERA in eight seasons with the Angels, and 3-4 with a 3.12 ERA in the postseason.
The Red Sox, in addition to Lackey, are trying to sign right-hander Josh Beckett to a contract extension. Beckett, 29, is entering the final year of his contract. His career numbers are slightly better than Lackey's, and he would command at least a comparable deal."You're one of the few Red Sox fans I don't mind." - Newch91

Beckett, Lester, Lackey with 2 of Dice K, Wakefield and Buchholz is a solid rotation.
Do you guys like this?
I am not a huge fan of Lackey and think he is a bit overrated but he is definitely a solid pitcher.0 -

I don't like him for 5 years, if that's what it ends up being ... just don't like signing a 31 year old for that long. If he pitches 200 innings, I like it ... but the last two years, he's been under 180, make me a tad nervous.
Certianly hurts the Angels, that's for sure.
Also, it could free up Buchholz to head to San Diego for Adrian Gonzalez! Which, I would love."You're one of the few Red Sox fans I don't mind." - Newch91

Yeah, I would not want him signed for 5 years either (edit:if i were a red sox fan). his innings have been down for the past couple years and like you said he is 31. That is a good point about Buchholz though. Interesting move if it happens, I surely didn't see it coming.0 -

It's how the Sox like to operate, I think it goes back to the Contreras scoop the Yanks made on the Sox.
Within the Sox ... loose lips, get fired."You're one of the few Red Sox fans I don't mind." - Newch91

I like the move, the 5th year worries me, but you need pitching and sometimes you overpay on the free agent market.

Jimed, here's a little off the wall idea for LF. Instead of giving big money for Holliday or Bay for 5 years or so, would you be happy with the unconventional signing of Vlad for LF. He has little range left, but LF is so small at home and with his gun he should cut down on the number of wall ball doubles. Plus you have Ellsbury patrolling Center who even with Bay and Manny always made plays by the wall in left center covering for them.
Plus you have Hermedia to spot him and he can DH if Papi slumps again. Even in his decline the last three years he's hitting .316 against righties.
I don't think he'll demand more than a 2 year deal for 8 mil per year.
Assuming you sign Beltre a lineup of:
Ellsbury
Pedroia
V Mart
Youk
Ortiz
Vlad
Drew
Beltre
Scutaro
is pretty good.- Busted down the pretext
