So ... the Sox have ...
Picked up the option on V-Mart.
Had Tek pick up his option.
Resigned Wakes
Made an offer to Jason Bay (still pending)
and traded for Jeremy Hermida ... untapped potential?
The only thing I've seen that's a tad out there thus far ... rumors that the Phils are looking at the possibility of acquiring Mike Lowell."You're one of the few Red Sox fans I don't mind." - Newch91

Well, the Lowell thing is a rumor ... and I think if that happened, the Sox would make a serious push to get Adrian Gonzalez from the Padres and move Youk back to 3rd ... which is a huge upgrade for the team. huge."You're one of the few Red Sox fans I don't mind." - Newch91

If the Phils want a DH in the NL they should trade for him. I love Lowell, but I doubt he'll ever get back to being a mobile 3rd baseman. He is just fighting to gain back any range next year. If the Sox get anything of value for Lowell it opens up possibilities. They can search for a big bat for 3B, LF, or a 1b then. They will need at least 1. Probably 2.
I think Theo is going to get creative this year, but aside from Gonzalez I am not sure where the creativity will come from.9/7/98, 8/3/00, 9/4/00, 4/15/03, 7/1/03, 9/28/04, 9/29/04, 5/24/06, 5/25/06, 6/17/08, 6/22/08, 6/28/08, 6/30/08, 5/17/10, 10/15/13, 10/16/13.0 -

Im just glad Vtek is on for one more year. It sucks that VMart is catcher but BUT what Vmart brings to this team is hitting. Vtek is a great guy and knows his shit. With his old ago in baseball terms he's not a big hitter obviously but still one of my favorite players.
The resigning of Wakefield however has me pissed. He's good but not that good. Beckett? cmon. . . he's blown more games than Dice K when. . when Dice K wasn't being a pussy<a href="http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v44/brother123/?action=view¤t=thewh0.png" target="_blank"><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/brother123/thewh0.png" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>0 -

So ... the Sox got a pitcher!!!
Boof Bonser ... uh, ok.
ok, sincerely, the kid had his moments, he does K a good amount of guys, but he also missed all of 2009.
I see him as a Sox type pitcher gamble (high K's, good K/BB), but, he's not the answer. Hell, I don't even know if he's healthy.
Now, on to this Mike Lowell for Max Ramirez potential trade.
Ok, so we get a very good catching prospect, good bat ... needs help on the defense, but, Tek can be his mentor (seeing as he'll have more time with V Mart starting) .... but, do we REALLY need to pay 9 of the 12M due to Lowell next year?
FUCK, I hate these deals where we end up paying for soemone to play somewhere else. Especially, like in the case of Renteria, they have a great season.
I'll miss Lowell, but it's obvious he cannot play 3rd without being a defensive liability ... and the Sox have the DH spot filled. I'm just glad the Lowell for Milton Bradley rumors aren't going to happen, man, I want no part of that asshole.
Overall, feels like we're losing gorund to the Yanks ... (and the rest of the AL) ... Sox seem to think that the kids they got in the minors are too good to be traded, so, we'll have to wait and see about that. Guess we may have a few years of hoping for 90-95 wins and a wild card."You're one of the few Red Sox fans I don't mind." - Newch91

Trust in Theo. He's a Pearl Jam fan after all.
Plus, it's 12/10. We're a long way from Spring Training. Plus the Yankees will always outspend us. We're hoping that the development machine and Theo's smarts make up the difference. Just wnat to point out my comments are not a "THE SKY IS FALLING" panic .... just an observation.
It's not about the Yanks outspendng the Sox ... I think the Yanks are a lot smarter with their spending these days*.
And Theo's thrown a few clunkers out there as well. Do I trust him/them yeah, but, it's not a 100% hit rate .... just got the feeling they'll have a tough time winning the AL East as currently constructed and with the direction they are heading.

The Red Sox spent 80 million more than only one team. The Yankees outspent the Red Sox by 80 million. The Red Sox are no paupers, but please do not categorize them as the same. Similar maybe, but the Yankees are the Babe Ruth of spenders.9/7/98, 8/3/00, 9/4/00, 4/15/03, 7/1/03, 9/28/04, 9/29/04, 5/24/06, 5/25/06, 6/17/08, 6/22/08, 6/28/08, 6/30/08, 5/17/10, 10/15/13, 10/16/13.0 -

Let's take a step back.
The Yankees didn't knock the Sox out of the playoffs last year, the Angels did, and they spent a little less than the Sox.
2 years ago it was the Rays that knocked the Sox out, and they spent significantly less.
I wish Sox fans would stop throwing up the salary chart. Do the Yankees benefit? Yeah, they do, a lot ... but, it just sounds so silly for Sox fans to be the ones pointing it out."You're one of the few Red Sox fans I don't mind." - Newch91

I agree with you, but actually the Red Sox were 6th in payroll last year. The last link didn't take into account dead money on payroll (i.e. the Phillies paying Eaton 9 million and Jenkins 7 million to not show up)
http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key= ... pPRtt9qIGw
The chart also shows payroll obligations as of the end of last season for the next 4 years.
It's kinda funny because of all the long term contracts they have signed the last few seasons that for of all the contracts that exist for the 2013 season, the Yanks are responsible for over 25% of the total salary commitments for all of baseball.- Busted down the pretext
