edit: ya you were right, i was hoping the ref would step in
well, it was supposed to be a rematch with paulo filho on this card, so baker was the replacement. there's speculation that filho is undergoing therapy for substance abuse problems.
it was sonnen vs. filho for the MW title that filho has at one of the WEC events a bit ago. the match was controversial, though, because sonnen knocked filho down in the first and many thought filho was ko'd and the fight should have been stopped. later, filho would catch sonnen in an armbar that made sonnen scream, but he didn't tap. the ref stopped the fight and declared it a verbal submission. i didn't see the fight, so i may be wrong about some of that.that's what i seem to remember happening.
in any case, it's supposed to happen again when filho is done recovery. no one really knows what his problems are, so i guess it's a waiting game.
really sonnen and filho are the only two MW's of note in the WEC. so given the controversy and the fact that there aren't a lot of challengers, they want to do the rematch. their heavier divisions aren't their strong suit in the WEC. the lighter fighters are usually in the spotlight.0 -
had to watch the replay to see that one.0

ya, that was a short fight, but a good little war.
I'd like to see that fight between shonnan/filho that you mentioned, it'll probably surface somewhere when the rematch is going to happen. I haven't seen filho fight so i can't say anything about him, but i'd also like to see shonan fight some closer competition before i make a decision on him.
Still a pretty good card with a couple stand out fights. Thought the Elicit card was better, but still a good night of fights... Now to go and watch the card that was on earlier today"I'll ride the wave where it takes me"

enjoy the yarennoka!
nice to have you as a partner in crime this evening for the shows, leafs. i'm usually flying solo on the strikeforce and some of the elite xc shows.sorry that releash couldn't join us with the damn comcast.
the elite xc was more entertaining for sure. the crunkilton vs. gomez match i have watched a few times now and so i really enjoyed that one too.
filho is ranked number two in the world by most people, behind anderson silva. he has his critics, though, who say he is a boring lay and pray style of fighter. personally, i'm kind of indifferent. some of his matches are good, some are just ok, but he always wins so you can't argue with that.
man, i can't wait for wednesday!0 -
they're showing the replay of yarennoka again on the fight network, so i'm catching the part i missed earlier...i forgot how good the bustamante vs takimoto fight was! personally, i would have given it to bustamante despite the knockdown, but still an exciting fight. ishida vs. melendez is on now. i could watch the first round of this one over and over again. great grappling, great action.0

leafs4ever wrote:that fight was all fickett... the reverse on the takedown was amazing and it really looked like he just out classed Lim
so i was still awake enough after yarennoka to watch the elite XC show again (i think i might have a problem) and i have to say after seeing that again on slo-mo a couple of times, that was incredibly slick and timed perfectly. perfect use of momentum. i like the little things like that can turn the favour in a fight. a subtle mistake, or a good read on how your opponent is going to react to a move.
also, i didn't notice the first time that lim made the mistake of trying to hook his arm under drew's leg, allowing drew to trap his arm as he jumped into the guillotine. again, very slick move from fickett. sometimes i have to watch the submissions and reversals a couple of times to truly appreciate the skill involved. "master"ful jiu-jitsu from fickett.0 -

lol, i didn't even watch yarennoka last night, i turned on the replay of the leafs/habs game (even though we should be losing, it's also nice when we beat the habs) and then went to bed. I just turned the event on now and i'm going to watch it before wrestlemania comes on tonite. i love that they are doing the introductions of all the fighters to Rage, gotta love some rage to pump you up.
I'm going to rewatch the elite xc event again probably tonite after mania, but ya ficket was amazing and that reverse was timed absolutly perfect. I noticed him pretty much tricking lim into that guillotine by going after a leg 1st, but didn't notice him trap the arm with his leg, that's pretty damn impressive and something i'll be looking out for when i rewatch it.
Ya last night was fun watchin them and having somebody to talk to about the events, i'll be at work on wednesday so i'll be pvring it and i'll be checking out this page while i'm watching it. So hopefully somebody can take my place for that one."I'll ride the wave where it takes me"

yes, that rage at the beginning was nice.sorry if i posted any spoilers! i think the only outcome i mentioned was the decision in bustamante vs. takimoto, and the one from ishida vs. melendez you would have known anyway from watching the elite xc strikeforce show.
sorry you won't be able to watch the show live on wednesday, leafs. :( should be a doozie! no doubt there'll be a few of us here (me, ceg and releash..maybe lbc) with some wow!'s and holy pie!'s. i can't see any way this card won't be exciting...but maybe i shouldn't jinx it!

uh-oh! i even went with manny by leg lock submission this time!this is a tough card to call with so many close matches...then there's the altitude factor in denver. i tried to stay away from too many decisions because of that. (watch them all go to decision! haha) also, i'm hoping for pre-lims, so that warped my thinking too.
p.s. aurelio by submission!0 -

i switched to manny by arm lock this time... i still don't think he could choke someone with those stubby little arms!~~*~~ ...i surfaced and all of my being was enlightend... ~~*~~0 -

i see how it is.good point about the arms, particularly in this case. i think jeff is close to a foot taller than manny, so the legs are likely too short for triangle chokes too!
yep, crazy size difference in this one...even moreso than we're used to seeing in manny's matches.
p.s. aurelio by submission!0 -

i know! i noticed the height difference... that's crazy! i'm pretty confident Manny can still pull off a win, but i think his methods are going to be limited...
p.s. i checked last night... i picked Roberts... that's only 7/12 winners the same... but we'll see what happens!
p.p.s. choo choo!~~*~~ ...i surfaced and all of my being was enlightend... ~~*~~0 -
haha!
making me laugh, ceg.
good luck to you! i tried to tells ya, though...
i'm getting giddy for wednesday!0 -

and a new season of TUF!! i seem to be developping a teeny tiny crush on Forrest... so i already know which team i'm rooting for!~~*~~ ...i surfaced and all of my being was enlightend... ~~*~~0 -
My picks for tomorrow ... these were particularly difficult matches to pick
Kenny Florian Vs. Joe Lauzon - Florian by TKO
Karo Parisyan Vs. Thiago Alves - alves by TKO
Matt Hamill Vs. Tim Boetsch - Hamill by submission
Nate Diaz Vs. Kurt Pellegrino - Diaz by KO
Houston Alexander Vs. James Irvin - Alexander by TKO
Frankie Edgar Vs. Gray Maynard - Maynard by TKO
Pre-lims:
Marcus Aurelio Vs. Ryan Roberts - Roberts by decision
Din Thomas Vs. Josh Neer - thomas by submission
Manuel Gamuryan Vs. Jeff Cox - Gamburyan by submission
Clay Guida Vs. Samy Schiavo - Guida by TKO
George Sotiropoulos Vs. Roman Mitichyan - Sotiropoulos by submission
Anthony Johnson Vs. Tommy Speer - Speer by TKO
I apparently was favoring TKO's while picking the methods of victory... I may have to rethink some of these before tomorrow.
VAS Y GRAY!!
ps My Bully shirt finally arrived today! Ceg, it has SPARKLES! Which makes it the girliest shirt I own!0
