  • A few interesting tidbits from M & MD today.

Reyes went down the toilet, both personally (Attitude, etc...) and on the field (hustle, heads up) as soon as soon as Valentin went down. They said they're hearing rumblings that valentin was a father figure type, and kept him in line, and that castillo may actually be a bad influence on him.

The Mets will look into trading beltran for a young starting pitcher

Loduca has pissed off ownership pretty good and is more than likely done

They've absolutely killed Milledge all day

He did a bit a few years ago with a Yankee (Uncle Sam type) punching an Angel. I'll try to find that.

there's a lot of things that go back to last year. like that slapping hands with the fans after his first home run, that rap video and apparently his celebration of his home run on saturday irked the marlins a bit.

No hustle and no smarts at all. He loafed after Willis liner into the corner, stretching a double into an easy triple. Also, he hit a HR to make it 9-0 on Saturday and was showboating, doing a chest bump at home plate. A few marlins have come out and said that woke them up and motivated them to knock the Mets out on Sunday

Oh RIGHT. The rap video! I remember that! It wasn't even good.

I saw Keith Hernandez talking about that, the way he was showing up the Marlins when he was celebrating a HR during a blowout game. Then somebody on the Marlins said 'f the Mets' before the game?

this contempt for the mets from the rest of the national league is nothing new either. i still remember when the cardinals won game seven, they were whooping it up by doing the "Jose, Jose" chant in the clubhouse.

I mean yeah he sucked yesterday but it's not his fault they were in that position that it was a must win game. He's going to become the goat. The Buckner, if you will :)

well his last four starts were rather awful also. he's had a nice career but there's no way the mets can consider him their top starter next year if they do bring him back which i'd guess is unlikely now.

    well of course not
It was his turn in the rotation? Maybe they should have went with Duque?

I mean Andy hasn't been having quality starts later but I'd still put $ on him in a playoff game. I really thought Tommy was going to come up big yesterday.

By the time Willie got someone else in the game it was too late. :(

a met fan friend just forwarded this email he got from the mets:

    Dear Mets Fan:

All of us at the Mets are bitterly disappointed in failing to achieve our collective goal of building upon last year's success. We did not meet our organization's expectations -- or yours. Everyone at Shea feels the same range of emotions as you -- our loyal fans -- and we know we have let you down. We wanted to thank you for your record-breaking support of our team this year.

Equally important, Ownership will continue its commitment in providing the resources necessary to field a championship team. Omar will be meeting with Ownership shortly to present his plan on addressing our shortcomings so that we can achieve our goal of winning championships in 2008 and beyond.

    You deserve better results.

Many thanks again for your record-breaking support.

I think that may be what costs Willie his job. The fact that these guys repeatedly do not hustle. The only thing that could save Willie here is if this goes over his head. As in, upper management told him that under no circumstances is he to ever again bench Reyes. That's just my speculation, but if true, Willie's doomed anyway. I was on here Saturday carping that Reyes absolutely should have been pulled for not running to 1st. maybe if he was, The mets would have been the team playing with some life yesterday, not the Marlins

Veterans don't always come up big. Look at Mo in 2001, WS Game 7. It happens
His timing was unfortunately atrocious. Maybe he was hurt and didn't want to say or something. Who knows.
