CitiField Rising

    CITI FIELD RISING
AMAZIN'S NEW HOME BEGINS TO TAKE SHAPE

    By MARK HALE

February 9, 2007 -- Once Citi Field is completed, Jeff Wilpon is optimistic about what the excitement level will be.

"I hope high," the Mets' Chief Operating Officer said yesterday. "There's no reason it's not going to be great."

Construction continues on the Mets' new ballpark, and yesterday Wilpon conducted a tour of the site for media members.

Citi Field is set to open in 2009, and while there were some dirt piles, pipes and equipment scattered about yesterday - there were rocks and wood shards in the area of what will be home plate in the new park - media members climbed a staircase and stood on the makeshift metal deck of the main concourse. The basic structure of the right field stands beyond first base is already up.

Hunt-Bovis, the company building the stadium, has also built the new Busch Stadium in St. Louis as well as PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Comerica Park in Detroit and Ford Field (the Detroit Lions' home field).

A total of approximately 6,000 workers will have worked on Citi Field by the time it's done. When it is finished, Citi Field's dimensions will be a tad bigger than Shea's - meaning it should continue to be a pitcher's park.

Beginning next week, Mets.com will feature a webcam highlighting construction updates.

    *

Speaking of Busch Stadium, according to a report on the Cardinals' Web site, the Mets will have to watch the Cards get their World Series rings before their April 3 regular season game.

    Mets Are Rising

    Mets are on the rise

Omar: New park, team built for future

    BY ADAM RUBIN
    DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Mets' new ballpark is beginning to take shape beside Shea. Steel supports are up in area of right-field corner.

Mets COO Jeff Wilpon stands on what will be a concourse at new park as lonely Shea looms in background.

They didn't match the Red Sox's posting bid for Daisuke Matsuzaka. They wouldn't go to the Giants' lengths to sign Barry Zito. Yet Mets GM Omar Minaya could still offer a chuckle yesterday.

"Put it this way," Minaya said. "We do have some money left for the All-Star break. I hope we're in position to be able to use that."

After chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon provided a tour of the construction progress on the Mets' new stadium, Minaya addressed the state of the Mets, whose pitchers and catchers report to Port St. Lucie on Thursday.

    The themes:

Behind Tom Glavine and Orlando Hernandez, the GM expects Oliver Perez and John Maine to claim the next two rotation spots, though he cautioned: "It's not going to be given to them because of what they did in the playoffs." Mets officials glowed about Perez, predicting he could emerge as the staff ace.

As for the fifth starter's slot, Mets officials seem to be privately cheering for former first-round picks Philip Humber and Mike Pelfrey, but the addition last night of Chan Ho Park muddies the picture. Aaron Sele and Jorge Sosa - along with Jason Vargas, acquired from Florida - are the insurance. Sosa would pitch out of the bullpen if he's not needed in the rotation, while Sele signed a minor-league contract that lacks an "out" clause, meaning he'd be locked in to pitching at Triple-A.

All signs point to Lastings Milledge being ticketed for Triple-A New Orleans to begin the year. Minaya spoke with Willie Randolph, and the two agreed Shawn Green should be considered the right-field favorite. "I think if Shawn is healthy, he's going to be given every opportunity to be the guy," Minaya said.

The GM isn't keen on keeping promising youngsters sitting on the bench, which means Milledge is more likely to be a Zephyr on Opening Day than a Mets reserve.

The Mets figure to carry an extra reliever rather than an extra bench player because of a starting staff that may go only five innings on a regular basis. David New.han looks like he has an early leg up for that final bench spot over outfielder Ben Johnson, joining Ramon Castro, Julio Franco, Damion Easley and Endy Chavez. Newhan can play infield and outfield. More importantly, he'd give the Mets a lefty pinch-hitter.

What about the lefty-hitting Chavez? The Mets would prefer not burning him at the plate too early in games, which would prevent him from being a late-game defensive replacement.

The bullpen locks, if everyone is healthy, appear to be Billy Wagner, Duaner Sanchez, Aaron Heilman, Scott Schoeneweis and Pedro Feliciano. Depending on whether Sosa is a starter or reliever, that leaves one or two spots for Ambiorix Burgos, Juan Padilla and Jon Adkins. Adkins is out of options, so he'd have to clear waivers to be sent to the minors.

Minaya said he's never been a part of a Mets camp with so much promising youth. In addition to Milledge, he'll have highly regarded outfield prospects Carlos Gomez and Fernando Martinez in camp. Tony Pena's teenage son Francisco, a catcher, will be there. And joining Pelfrey and Humber will be pitchers Kevin Mulvey and Joe Smith.

BUILDING BLOCKS: Wilpon estimated 20% of the stadium construction is complete. Steel girders that provide the frame have started to be erected, beginning down the right-field line. Several of the concrete stair structures leading to what will be the main concourse are up, too. Wilpon said fans should see a steel outline of the first level of the stadium, from the right-field corner clockwise to partially up the third-base side, by Opening Day. By June, the brick exterior, with its granite base, should be visible. The team will debut a Web cam on mets.com next week so fans can see daily snapshots of stadium progress.

Don't think i'm completely over Beltran striking out looking in the seventh game. What made it worse is that you know, without a shadow of a doubt, that the Mets would have killed the Tigers!! Opportunities like that are fucking hard to come by..

As for this season, i'm optimistic as usual. The bats look fine, but the starting pitching is suspect. We'll see what happens with Perez and Sanchez..Park could be a good addition if he keeps his tae kwon do in check..

Oh, and I hope Zito fails miserably!! What a fucking prick...I'm glad we didn't get that asshole..

    Why?

Because you want to be reminded how the Mets swept the Dodgers out of the Playoffs in October?

It's a rite of spring. Teams invite guys who were decent a few years ago to camp to see if they can rediscover that magic. It almost never works, but it's worth a shot

oops, I just assumed it was a non roster invite. Wow, they gave him a guaranted contract. That's pretty bad.
