Well, I'm glad he said that. That gives me more confidence in Willie. And to an extent I totally agree with David. It is the job of the guys on the field to play and win. But, the job of the manager in baseball, since there aren't plays to call in the same way there are in other sports, is to get the fire started. We had the talent, we didn't have the motivation. And that is Willie's job, and he failed.

he did, but it's also the failings of the GM. if he assembled a team that plays half-assed baseball for four months then you have to wonder. especially for a manager such as randolph who always (whether you agree or disagree with it) defends his guys.

If a player can't play for a guy who is willing to defend him no matter what then that player has to look in the mirror.

i agree alou should come back as green to.maybe have green at 1st.i think when ya have veteran team i really dont think they should have to have motivation.they know there job and knew what was on the line. they failed us and failed willie and threw him under the bus.

Oh, I totally agree. I certainly don't think anyone who's part of this team is free from blame. Well, except maybe Wright or Alou. And I think that Willie can't take all the responsibility and Omar made a huge mistake not trying to boost the bullpen and didn't try hard enough to get some other starters at the beginning of the season. But, this team no matter what should have made the playoffs. And I think that Randolph is the person who bears the most, responsibility. But certainly far from all.

here's who not to blame and who to blame:

delgado - yes and no, he stinks defensively but he's also on the wrong side of 30.

castillo - i can't blame him, he hit and fielded decently

reyes - had his head in his ass the entire second half, perhaps he's not as good as made out to be or sometimes a player that's really good goes through stretches like he did. how he comes back in spring training will be a real test of his character

wright - can't blame him, he can only do so much

alou - injuries always a factor

beltran - yes, he did go down looking last year in game seven but every really or very good player has a moment like that. he also played well the final two months.

green - old bat, nothing doing here

milledge - has the potential but i still wonder about his matrurity and timing of comments like this:

"We've been in first place forever," Milledge said. "We were
the best team in the National League East. We're still the best
team in the National League East. But we still have to keep
    grinding."

he said that on sept 7 and at the time he was right, but you will never hear more experienced players say that

lo duca - i've seen enough of him, another old guy

martinez - no way can you blame pedro martinez for even coming back from major surgery like he did.

glavine - those last three starts were awful

hernandez - good numbers but always hurt

maine and perez - still too young to get rid of, may not become number ones but one-plus seasons for both is still to small of a sample

bullpen - the whole group, including billy wagner

bottom line there's too many guys who took the NL east for granted. fans can do it because they don't have to play but players should never do it.

heres my thoughts. id really like to see gomez and lastings in the of and maybe have alou share time in lf with whomever is in lf.id also like to see green comeback maybe as a bench player, but it wouldnt bother me if he wasnt back.i think lo duca is gone and rightfully so.i think all of the old guys are gone and are somewhat to blame.i think reyes is the real deal just that maybe it wasnt a good idea to bring ricky back into the fold. the bullpen needs a major overhaul.pitching staff is gonna have some rough times with pedro, humber, maine, ollie and pelfrey. all in all i think this group has had its run, now its time to get younger and faster.

makes sense to me, i'd really like to see more of gomez and milledge from opening day, although i'd consider moving milledge should a younger expericenced starting pitcher become available.

there's no way rickey can come back. i think reyes is for real, like i said the type of shape and focus he comes to spring training with will go a long way in dicating what type of career he has.

roberts would be good, i don't see the orioles moving him, they just signed him to a two-year extension this spring. i'd bring back castillo or go after marcus giles for second base.

Shockingly, last year the Orioles GM (Jim Duquette, the same mope who traded Scott kazmir for Victor zambrano) wanted to trade Roberts to Atlanta for Adam laroche. Peter Angelos, the owner, nixed the deal. that may the one and only good move Angelos has made with the O's. What a horrible deal that would have been

It will be an interesting off season. Lo Duca is gone, along with Green, Glavine, hopefully Delgado, Willie and the entire bullpen including Wagner.
    Who do you want out?
Somehow Beltran become my favorite player this year..

put on a slow, dumb show for you
    and crack you up
so you can put a blue ribbon on my brain

    and I'll overdo it'
  • I hate to blame willie because he had to deal with pitchers who wouldn;t go deep and had to pick them up with a thin pen, but mentally they played themselves out of the playoffs. a coach is reponsible for the X's and O's, but in baseball, their biggest role comes in keeping the team's head on straight for the long 162 game season, and that is where the mets failed. besides the baserunning and other mental errors, you have jose reyes and others giving a team whose season is over, a reason to compete in game 162. from the first inning through the whole game, the marlins played and coached the game like it was game 7 of the WS, and the mets took it like a B game in the preseason.

in 08, fuck the slogans, fuck the dancing, fuck the singing, fuck everything, and go out there and win the fucking game. the man to do that, Frank Robinson. He won;t take shit from the players, and won;t take shit from Omar.
I don't want to be hostile. I don't want to be dismal. But I don't want to rot in an apathetic existance either.
