    I agree with metsy.

As long as they wear the Mets' Orange and Blue, it shouldn't matter the color of their skin or where they're from.

I cheer for them all--even the ones I don't like very much--as should any Mets fan!

I think you're putting words into Omar's mouth or misreading him somehow.

He's the same GM who signed Wright to a long-term deal in the middle of last season. He was willing to go after Glavine in an option year, though most signs pointed to his desire to return to Atlanta. He practically begged to get Shawn Green on the team. And he's been reluctant to trade Aaron Heilman, though most of us 'experts' would've given him away many, many months ago.

Don't mistake Omar's pride in his nationality/ethnicity for a supposed disdain for Anglos and their heritage. Yes, he heavily recruited Latino players, but not at the expense of bringing in solid players of all backgrounds.

    Why even think like that?

  • It is not me thinking that way, it is Omar.

Starting on the bench, we will start with the hiring of willie - we have learned over the past couple of years why he was passed over several times. then there was the firing of Rick Down.

around the horn, traded young jacobs for old delgado , who just the year before didn;t want to come to shea. then there was valentin, and replaced him with castillo. resigining wright and reyes were no brainers. gave an old alou a contract, over paid for beltran, and lets not forget the signing of julio franco.

on the the mound, he gave pedro all he wanted, resigned mota, traded benson and nady for jorge julio and roberto hernandez respectively.

as for glavin, not a hard decision (300 wins) and for heilman, he is a cheap effective set up man who would be a 4th starter for a bunch of teams.

half of the active roster is latin.

    just saying.

If you truly believe that, then I challenge you to read this: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/baseball/mlb/06/12/minaya0618/ .

I think if you give the article a chance, you might think a little differently about Omar. He strikes me as more of a catch-all--a guy who gets along with EVERYBODY. That's why his team looks like a UN summit.

  • just stating that history has shown that he has shown a tendancy to go after the latin player.

in march of '05, the first spring of minaya's term, latin players made up 27.5% of the roster. the team he formerly led, expos / nats, were 1st at 37.5%

looking at the mets roster now, it is up to about 50%.

ill see yas tonight at shea!
  • what makes one who points out something about race a racist. besides, not once have i said i didn't like the team he assembled. i have only questioned his moves when they were made, and made some valid points along the way. two other things i have not included that may also be a reason for his "moves" is to get an edge on the young latin talent (they are often free agent pick ups and not draft picks) and a NYC marketing angle.

as for being a met fan, i have been one for the past 30 years and will continue to be one for i hope to be a minimum of another 30 years, regardless of the make-up of the team.

btw, japs? that is nice language.

yes you have made vaild points but one would say that being a white person sorry if you arent and making those vaild points could be taken in a racist way this day in age. and thats fine he wants to get an edge cause all you have to do is look at our draft picks for the last 15 years and see they have given us shit, i have no problems with it.30 years huh, thats alot of heartbreaks

  • sorry i made this into a "moving train" thread. started as a joke, and when taken seriously, i thought i would make a debate out of it. that should be it ... if someone does not want me to get the last word, go ahead.

on to the baseball, and to his credit, what omar has done has made some great finds in the "throw-ins" to deals. case in point, maine was a throw in to the beson deal, and OP was a throw in when aquiring Roberto Hernandez last year.

and yes, 30 years ... not a lot of heartbreak, just a lot of misery. it will really hurt if my son grows to be a yankee fan. i always say: being a yankee fan is easy, being a met fan teaches you character.

    big game tonight.

im sorry for taking you seriously. in the past, met threads have gotten locked on here and i try to keep things to baseball only for that reason.yeah i understand the misery part. i cried after game 7 of the nlcs was over with last year and didnt go to college the next day.i'll disown my kid if he becomes a yanks fan, once i have one.i totally agree with the met character thing.

Why throw it anywhere close to the inside? It's where Frenchie was looking...

Let's not allow the bullpen to distract us from a pretty fine performance given by John Maine tonight. Wouldn't want that to go unnoticed, especially when he hasn't had great outings the last few weeks.

But, of course, the bullpen did cost him the win.

Strange thing is that Mota really hasn't been all that bad recently. He seems to pitch fairly effectively on the road. It's just at Shea where he's garbage. And the fans just let him have it.

Thanks for being specific. I guess what I was referring to was four of his last five outings (Sept 1, 3, 4, 7), three of them having been on the road.

Those numbers were much more akin to what you'd want to see out of him. Then he goes and lays an egg tonight.

Thanks to the Mets offense, Mota's probably going to be given a win for his efforts tonight.

Tonight's game was best case scenario.
we won..beat the braves....and mota came in to once again show he should never pitch a playoff inning...(and he BETTER not)

  • willie is giving mota every chance to prove himself and he continues to disapoint. he is such a hot head that when anyone gets on, he loses his head and tries to throw the ball around the field. the other problem is that i don;t think willie has anyone else.

starters are going to have to suck it up in the postseason and go at least 7.
I don't want to be hostile. I don't want to be dismal. But I don't want to rot in an apathetic existance either.
  • From ESPN.com

New York led 3-1 with two outs and nobody on in the eighth but Atlanta tied it on Jeff Francoeur's two-run single off much-maligned Guillermo Mota, booed by the crowd of 51,648 as he trotted to the mound with a 5.82 ERA.

"I'm going to keep going to him. He's got some of the best stuff in our bullpen," Mets manager Willie Randolph said.

Good thing the Mets pretty much wrapped this thing up already.

Also... I hate the Phillies but doesn't it make more sense to root for the Phillies to win the wild card? If they do we would face whoever wins the Central. Otherwise we will prolly end up facing San Diego and with their starting pitching in a short series it's not gonna be easy.

    You use good logic, TreeFrog.

But I won't stoop to the level of hoping Philly wins the Wild Card. The Mets played San Diego pretty well this season. Peavy is 1-1 against the Mets this year, as is Hoffman; Young has a no decision, but gave up 4 ER in 5 innings. Most of those games saw lots of runs scored, so I don't think the Mets are intimidated by the Padres' starting pitchers. That's an important stat, when you consider that Petco and Shea are noted pitchers' parks.

My best case scenario is to have the Cubs, Diamondbacks, and Padres join the Mets in the Playoffs. I'd welcome a Brewers appearance, but no way would I want to see the Rockies. In my best-case, Mets would have the second-best record in the NL and face the Cubs in the Division Series. Padres beat the Dbacks in the other DS, then the Mets have home field advantage against SD in the NLCS.

There's a good chance the Mets will have the #1 seed, though. In that case, they'd get San Diego and then the winner of AZ/CHC.

Whatever. It doesn't matter who the competition is. I'm just ready to see my team playing again in October!

That's the problem there Willie...he's got some of the best stuff...and he has an era close to 6.00! Its called Triple A Willie....they are called...the best pitchers on your Triple A team. Its called..."Call Up's"...that's when you bring them up as no one has seen their stuff yet. Remember John Maine...Yeah...he was from the farm system....
There has GOT to be someone who can pitch a scoreless inning better then 1/3 of the time....give me a break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I haven't slept in a long time so I may be missing something but it seems to me your best case scenario is not possible. If the D-backs win the division and the Padres get the wild card, then they cant face each other in the first round because they are in the same division. The same reason the Mets won't face the Phillies in the first round if they get the wild card. So the Mets would end up playing San Diego whether the have the best or second best record in the NL.
