Two HRs yesterday is a nice step in the right direction. He needs to improve that .265 BA, though.

Still waiting for Mike DiFelice to get hurt so that we can watch the amazing 41 y/o Sandy Alomar, Jr. catch for the big club. :(

Mets pitcher Tom Glavine made sports history last week when he became the first former NHL draft pick to win 300 games in Major League Baseball. On Saturday, Glavine was honored at Shea Stadium with Tom Glavine Day, and Rangers legend and Hockey Hall of Famer Rod Gilbert was on hand to join in the celebration.

In honor of the pitcher's remarkable achievement, Gilbert presented Glavine with a No. 47 Rangers jersey -- a reference to the career the 41-year-old Glavine might have enjoyed had he chosen hockey over baseball more than two decades ago.

Glavine's connection to hockey is strong. A fourth-round pick of the Los Angeles Kings in 1984, Glavine had starred at Billerica High School in Billerica, Mass., scoring 47 goals and 94 points in 23 games as a senior. He was named the winner of the Boston Bruins Carlton Award as the top high school player in the Boston area for 1983-84. The Bruins presented the award to him prior to a March 17, 1984, game against New Jersey.

A two-sport star, Glavine made the fateful choice to go with baseball after the Atlanta Braves made him a second-round pick in the 1984 MLB Draft. He had been considering a scholarship offer to play hockey at the University of Lowell, but could not resist the opportunity to pursue a baseball career and opted to enter the minor leagues in the same summer he was drafted.

Mets trade two minor league position players for 41 y/o utility player Jeff Conine today.

    What do we think?

With the injury to Easley, it helps to have another right-handed bat on the bench. But I just can't help wishing that Omar could've found some bullpen help for this team. Perhaps they're planning to see if Pedro can pitch out of the 'pen this fall?

Kudos to them for getting someone with playoff experience, but pitching is still a GLARING need for these guys.

Considering the ages of Glavine, El Duque, Alou, Valentin, and Alomar, Jr. the Mets aren't getting THAT much younger with Conine.

Willie defers way too much to the veterans, even when they're slumping.

I feel the same way. Old bench is not better than good arms in the pen. We need LOTS of pitching after this season.

I'm squarely in the Castillo camp, but I still reserve judgment on Beltran for the rest of the season. You never know when another injury is going to force him into another slump.

He's been coming up big since returning from his latest DL stint, though. Things are looking up (and the Braves are now 6 1/2 games back!).

Way to score 1 in the eighth and 2 in the ninth! I'm excited by this come-from-behind victory over a quality team!

You didn't do that in the AET League because I have him there. And, yes, he's been a welcomed starter in my OF since coming back.

Too bad the rest of my team is so weak.

Buddy of mine at work (Braves fan) asked me yesterday why no one is talking about the Mets. They've got the largest division lead in the majors, best record in NL, and have been one of the hottest teams over the last 10-12 games.

I told him I like it that way. If people aren't talking about the Mets, they're more likely to see their teams lose to the Mets.

How much longer 'til call-ups? I'm ready to see what Pedro's got.

Dumbass MOTA! WTF, Willie? Why'd you have to leave him in for the 7th?

If it wasn't obvious already, it is now--Mota's steroid use enhanced his pitching ability. He's been trash ever since coming off the suspension. I say Omar needs to find a way to get him his juice or find a way to get his ass off the roster.

    NOW!

Oh, and nice job leaving SEVEN men on-base tonight, Delgado. Is it so hard to get a hit once every five at-bats?

At least the Mets didn't lose any ground tonight.

    Frickin' MOTA!!!!

  • first off, yes fuck mota.

willie needed to leave him in ... the pen has been used a lot the last week, the score was already getting out of control, and the pitchers spot was due up the next inning.

i am waiting for them to release him outright ... the scary thing is that they gave him the contract after he was caught, not before, and they backloaded it (more next year) since he was suspeneded without pay for a 1/3 of the season; good job omar.

Ditto on pretty much everything you said. the only thing that made it easier to watch was the fact Atl. and Phi. were both losing all night as well.

But i mean, give me a break Mota. w/ his era now, its almost a givin' that if you bring him in, he will give up 1 run every inning he pitches.

and damn Big Stick Carlos Delgado...you should just stay on the bench if you can't get around on an inside fastball....

Millage too...looks like Cerano from Major League when he tries to hit a curve...it was embarrassing for him last night!

Thank God Beltran is soo hot right now! (but not losing ground when facing Peavy is a good thing!)

    Dear God:

Will you please make all the Mets starters able to throw complete-game shutouts for the rest of the season? We'd really appreciate it if we didn't have to watch the relievers throw one more pitch all year.
