good question. I consider Pettitte to be a homegrown yankee, despite the 3 years in Houston, and despite the fact that he was signed as a free agent. It could easily be argued that he was a homegrown Yankee from 1995-2003, and is now just another free agent signee. I'm not sure if that answers your question. Did you mean pettitte, or someone more along the lines of a Mariano Rivera, who's been a Yankee his whole career, but this year hit the free agent market, and ultimately resigned with the yankees?

I was actually thinking more along the lines of Tom Glavine going back to the Braves, but I think that Pettite is another perfect example of what I was thinking about. I'm not sure how I would look at them, not that it really makes a big difference as long as the fans except that player.

I'd definitely consider Mo to be a homegrown Yankee considering he never pitched anywhere else.

I wouldn't count on it. i'm a big Yankees fan, one who loves seeing the Mets suffer. But there's no chance of them not making the playoffs when you take last years team, drop Loduca and Milledge and add Johan Santana. The Phillies will still be good, and it will still be a good divisional race, but the only scenario where the Mets miss the playoffs is if Santana blows out his arm, or Maine, Perez and Pedro all suck and/or get hurt

Or if the entire offense decides not to hit, ever.

He's a great pitcher, but not for that cash. His arm has already begun to fall off. only 15 wins last year, you guys OVERPAID BIGTIME and i hope it sets your franchise back 10years. He better hit 500 for that salary

You're totally wrong. You have to think in more than just wins. He had 15 wins, for the Twins. If you put him on a team with better offense, in a pitcher friendly park, in the NL, that can easily translate into 3-5 more wins, with a lower ERA. This guy is arguably (a very good argument) the best pitcher in baseball right now.

If you look at his numbers, even with a 15-13 record he was still 5th in the Cy Young voting, clearly he's putting up much better numbers than his win/loss record, but playing for a lousy team. He will thrive for the Mets.

And even if he only does it for as the best pitcher in baseball for 3-4 years, he will still be a very good pitcher , one of the best,(barring injury) for the remainder of his contract. Of course offering a pitcher that many years (and that much money for anyone who plays a sport) is too much. But for what it does to this team for the next 4 years, its totally worth it.

I don't think there is an argument. He is the best pitcher in baseball, and there is not a close second. he's light years beyond therest of the league. He had what most consider to be a bad year for him last year. Won 15 games, with 235 K's and a 3.33 ERA in the AL. I'd take 5 guys who put up those numbers. Now translate those numbers into the weaker NL, and I see 23 wins, 280 K's. The only concern I would have as a Met fan would be that you can't get insurance on a contract like that anymore. The most that can be insured is 3 years and $39 million. If he blows out his arm, than the Mets are on the hook for the rest of his deal. That could cripple the Mets, if it were to ever happen.

Agree with all you said about Johan's superiority right now. The one number that concerns lots of people is his HR allowed. It's gone up recently.

But I think that's more a function of pitching in a power-hitter/DH league than a sign of his weakening skill. I mean, if you had to take the mound against Anaheim, Boston, Cleveland, Detriot, and New York several times a year you'd see a rise in your HR allowed too.

By the way, he passed the physical and a presser is scheduled for Wednesday.

he's a fly ball pitcher and that's gonna happen, just gotta hope no one's on base. I don't think he'll enjoy pitching at the Bank. Shea should help him out, it's a pretty big ballpark. What are the dimension's for the Mets new feild?

    CitiField overview from http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/nym/ballpark/citifield_overview.jsp :

Field Orientation: The four-acre natural turf field will expand from home in a northeasterly direction with the leftfield line stretching northward, and the rightfield line extending eastward.

Right Field Porch: In rightfield there will be a singular deck that will be situated to extend into and over fair territory by eight feet.

Pitcher Friendly: Distinctive asymmetrical outfield walls, along with generous dimensions (LF - 335'; LC - 379'; CF - 408'; RC - 383'; RF - 330') make for a traditional pitcher's park.

    Shea Stadium
    Left Field - 338
    Left Center - 371
    Center - 410
    Right Center - 371
    Right Field - 338

Yeah, I'm excited they're building it.

Oddly though, I live in Florida and have never been to Shea. Can't decide whether I should try to go this year just to say I've been. If not this year, I'd definitely go next year to see the new stadium in-play.

I'm also glad to see that the dimensions haven't changed significantly. I like the Mets playing in a pitcher's park.

And rhinomagic, you should go this year. Just to be where their championships took place.

And to see a pretty ugly ballpark.

You going to be there to share a dog and a beer with a fellow PJ fan and his wife? Maybe we can have a PJ/Mets Fans hang-out to celebrate the occasion.

I know Shea is ugly, but I kinda want to see the dump in person. I've watched countless games on tv the last 23 seasons. I guess I should start making plans.

Hell yea. I would be totally down to a PJ/Mets fan hang out at a game. I only made it to four games last summer, which is a down year for me. But I hope to make it to many more.

And yea, it is a dump, but its our dump and so ya' gotta love it.

    OK. Which game?

Mrs. Rhinomagic and I are interested in seeing Shea, Yankee, and Fenway all in one trip. We'd have to pick a week or weekend in which all three are playing home games.

And we have to schedule around Bonnaroo now, apparently.

You ever go to Spring Training in Port St. Lucie? Great Mets atmosphere there.

Any date that works well for you that I'm around for I'd be more than happy to go to. I'll also pm Metsy to see what he thinks. I'd love to be able to see you Johan pitch, but I'd also just be happy to go to a game.

Mets press conference introduced Santana to day. God, I can't believe how excited I was just to see him wearing the jersey and that hat.

NL East has three tough teams. It should be interesting.

Rhino, I've been talking to Metsy and he's definitely in too. I think when you figure out what works best for you we should definitely make a post about a Mets fan/PJ fan meet up at a game, and maybe go out afterwards.
