everyone has this perception of him that he has the golden touch. he is not jerry west, or some magical savior who can do no wrong. if his name was Steve Johnson, he would be fired by now

But if his name was Steve Phillips, he would be granted at least another 1-2 seasons to sink the team further towards the cellar. Mets ownership has a bad track record with managers on the field and in the front office, especially since the Wilpons got control of the operation.

Don't forget: we're still ahead of the Nationals! Omar has ground to make-up on Steve.

  • You could probably say the same thing about Jeff Wilpon, for that matter. Jeff Johnson, with the exact resume of Jeff Wilpon,he's probably not going to become COO. The same could be said for hank Johnson with the Yankees, and James Johnson of the Knicks/Rangers/Cablevision

nice of the mets to make the guy fly all the way to the west coast and then fire the guy.

  • Wow. can they do anything right? A 3:14 A.M. firing?!?! Omar and the Wilpons have managed to make Willie a victim in all of this. This move has been botched from the beginning. By Beginning, I mean last Sept/Oct when they left him hanging for a few days. They've actually won 3 out 4, and it would eb better than that if Wagner hadn't melted down. is it Willie's fault he brought in his $13 million per year closer to save a few games? It would be absolutely hilarious if now they went out and dropped 8 out of 10. And I'm not saying Willie is a great manager, or that he didn't deserve to be fired. They just botched this one completely.

    from Joel Sherman's blog:

If you are a Met fan this is a sad day. Not because of the removal of Randolph, booed heavily the last time he was seen at Shea. But because the organization for which you root does not seem to have any game plan -- and apparently has no heart, as well. They actually made Randolph plus coaches Rick Peterson and Tom Nieto fly the charter 3,000 miles to California on Sunday night simply to be removed on Monday. Met management had to know what it intended to do because the Mets won on Monday.

It was not as if some last straw was dropped. This made the people in charge of the Mets look aimless and petty. The least Randolph, Peterson and Nieto should have gotten was frequent flyer miles.

what a shitty move.... since they won, obviously they knew they were going to fire him before the game, so why wait until he flies 3000 miles, manages a game, and answers questions after the game? Really made the mets look bad and very spineless.

so when do they fire Omar? Obviously... the front office is the largest problem.

Wow. can they do anything right? A 3:14 A.M. firing?!?! .

I heard a story that yesterday somebody asked Tony Bernazard "is anyone was getting fired today" he said no, but when asked about it today, he said "they didn't get fired yesterday". what a fuck.

I heard that too. Disgraceful. This kind of stuff can and will make it difficult to bring in a top notch manager next year. Possibly even players. Now, money can make just about any issue go away. That said, they really look clueless over this, and that may hurt them like it hurt the Yankees in the late 80's/early 90's. Players would feign interest in the team to drive up the price, but would never actually come here.
  • Another Bernazard story. Willie is throwing battiing practice yesterday, and in the dugout, Bernazard is talking to Manuel, basically negotiating his deal to become manager.

Watching this presser, Omar is one shady fella.

Yes, it was terrible that the Mets released news of the firings in an email at 3.14 AM EDT. Yes, it is terrible that Omar seems to have very little in the way of a game-plan to right the ship and get the team back into the division race (they aren't THAT far behind). And yes, it seems terrible that the front office is a dysfunctional unit that will collapse underneath its own weight soon.

But I still can't wait to make my first trip to Shea on Monday. Let's Go (back to the drawing board) Mets!

  • I have to begrudgingly admit---that was a hell of a win last night. Nice temper tantrum by Reyes teh night before....
  • so this is the guy who is now in charge of the Mets. referring to reyes temper tantrum the other night

"I told him the next time you do it I'm going to get my blade out and cut you - right out there on the field," Manuel joked yesterday afternoon. "I'm a gangster now. You act gangster on me I'm going to have to get you."

Obviously it's a joke, but still............

also, reports say Willie's feels backstabbed by manuel

Randolph had spotted Manuel having a lengthy conversation on the field at Shea Stadium last week with Mets VP of player development Tony Bernazard, a known Randolph detractor. Randolph grew concerned Manuel was serving as a mole to the front office and he confronted Manuel about the meeting. Manuel denied anything nefarious in his face-to-face with Randolph.

  • hey Met fans, Jerry Manuel thinks are all one big pile of fertilizer. I'm guessing he's not talking about Weed N Feed

And on the Reyes/Gangster quote, how funny is it that The Drudge Report took the quote literally, and ran a story with this headline:

“New NYMets manager threatens to stab a star player.”

manuel also dropped this quote on Reyes, from the NY Post:

Manuel also invoked Bill Parcells' famous reference to Terry Glenn as "she" instead of "he" by doing the same thing to describe Reyes for his on-field fit.

"She acted up with me, and she had a day off," Manuel said of Reyes.

Though the record might have been worse, this has to be the lowest point of the mets season after being embarassed two games in a row at home by the worst team in baseball. Shake up shmake up ... i know what this team needs ... a good ole fashion brawl.

Maine could start it (he has plunked others in the past), and i could see batista retaliating to start the festivities.

  • looks like that home plate ump was way in the wrong last night. Beltran voiced his displeasure the right way, head down and not making the scene. No matter what he said, it ain't right for the ump to come out from behind the plate and make a scene. Then for him to bump manuel....if a manager gets a lengthy vacation for bumping an ump, then an ump should get suspended for bumping a manager. I'm curious to hear his side of things, but it looks like he was terribly wrong

The Amazins are at .500 and only 3.5 games out of first place in a weak National League.

I know it's been a tough half-season so far, but aren't any of us Mets fans the least bit hopeful after what they've done on the road in St. Louis and Philly?

I still believe. Let's Go Mets!

Three of four from the Phillies on the road. Yeah, the bullpen was terrible last night, but they had enough of a cushion to put the game away in the end.

2.5 games back with the Giants and Rockies coming to town before the Break.

Even though we won, last night really made me hate the Mets... or at least their bullpen... or maybe just Wagner.

Also, don't know if its been discussed yet, but I think after the altercation between Keith Hernandez and Jose Reyes last week, either Keith should be fired or suspended indefinitely.

Why should keith be suspended? because of what he said on TV?

after reyes slammed his glove to the ground during Sunday's game against the Yankees, he said: "Well, he's got to get over that. Enough babying going on now. He's a grown man, he's been around a long enough time. Take off the kid gloves." i would have to agree.

Maybe I read wrong, but I read that he approached Reyes personally and made some negative comments to his face, and I think that's inappropriate. Reyes is much more important right now to the Mets than Keith Hernandez.

It was Reyes who approached Hernandez on the charter flight ... he was irked by hearing keith's comments second hand by friends and family and confronted him about them.

  • harrymanback has it right. Hernandez did nothing wrong, and should be commended for having the balls to say what he did. Most hometeam announcers See No Evil, Speak No Evil, and hear No Evil. He was right, reyes is a baby.

Didn't Manuel refer to Jose Reyes as 'she' following the tantrum? Hernandez should've decked him hard. Put some of that '86 tough love on the kid.

I recently read "The Bad Guys Won" on our trip to New York for the Mets game and PJ concerts. Being 9 or 10 years old when they won that championship, I had no idea what a bunch of scumbags and trouble-makers those guys were. I still loved watching every one of them play, but what a messed-up crew they were!

1.5 games back and a big whipping of Lincecum and the Giants. Here's to the Phillies and Marlins continued stumbles and the Mets continued successes.

The Mets need to sweep either the Giants or Rockies (both would be nice) and take 2/3 from the other team.

    Pelf is awesome.

Three days ago I heard a report that the Mets definitely would NOT be in the market for a corner outfielder at the trading deadline. Seems like an absurd thought at this point, with Alou and Church both down for a long time.

Welcome back to Shea Stadium, Mr. Nady.
