in my estimation, they've got to be one of the luckiest .500 teams in history. They've had losses where they gave up 22, 15 and 16. The bullpen is the worst in baseball and has two late-inning guys on the DL. Three starting position players are on the DL and one starting pitcher, who has 47 wins over the past three seasons is on the DL while two hired guns have yet to find their groove.

I have no idea what will happen when players start coming back, but considering everything so far, they're very lucky to be a .500 team that frankly even when at full strength and normal performance might not be better than the Red Sox.

It apparently doesn't get leave you very much money for a good bench, (nothing says rally time in the eighth when brett gardner pinch hitting in the eighth is your move) and a good bullpen, especially when you spent all that money putting a martini bar, a streakhouse and a hard rock cafe in your new stadium. But hey, at least I got a foul ball..

The last time the Yankees opened with five straight losses to the Red Sox was 1985. That was part of Yogi Berra's 6-10 start, which led to his firing and ushering in of Billy 4. I'm pretty sure that won't happen here since the Steinbrenner in charge doesn't fire people like a bodily function.

Like I've been telling my friends IT'S STILL EARLY but the Yankees and there half filled stadium look like elephant dung.

BTW who builds a new brand stadium where you can't see the entire field, do you get to only pay for 3/4 of the ticket price?

Not all the seats. Only a section in the bleachers where they put the sportsbar. I had bleacher seats for a game that wasn't on Sunday. And it looked like a better view than the old bleachers.

It's not girardi's fault. The team is just garbage. The entire bullpen is crap and has been crap for the past few years but cashman doesn't ever bother getting new relievers. They've become a team that just gets big names and they usually get burned for it. But then again they always bring in the money cause the fans keep paying so I guess why change the formula if it works? This team makes me so sad. oh well.

Rivera's velocity is diminished following the offseason shoulder surgery.

To show you how much they miss Rodriguez take a look at this telling comparsion

Evan Longoria, 10 home runs, 38 RBI
Yankee fill-in third baseman 0 home runs, 8 RBI

Another injury tonight, Jose Molina. They don't have another catcher on the 40-man roster, meaning that someone will have to be purchased from Triple-AAA. That could be either Kevin Cash or Chris Stewart (barring trade).

The last time Rivera gave up two home runs was 7/18/1998 at Toronto when Mike Stanley and Ed Sprgue connected.

Yankees are 6-for-43 with RISP the last five games and have fallen behind by three runs in each of the last four games. The last four games have seen them allow a combined 15 runs before they scored their first run.

Mike Lowell - 6 home runs, 28 RBIs

But tonight's were back to back ... and I don't think he's EVER given up back to back HRs ... has he?

Of course, THIS is the year I decide to roster him in two of my roto leagues. :?

right that was the first time. Good call on Lowell, as well. I just cited Longoria since they were playing Tampa Bay.

What also gets lost in this game is the run that Jose Veras gave up in the seventh. That made it 6-4 and if it stayed 5-4, Damon's home run would been the likely game-winner assuming Rivera closes it out.

i'm thinking of sending over my resume for middle relief. I think i can still hit about 78 on the radar guns.

Obviously the Orioles suck, and its 1 game........it was crazy to see him take the 1st pitch out on a ball with velocity on the inside half. The best part was that the Yankees looked like they were having fun again, they need to relax and wear out starting pitchers. Guys will be comin back as the season goes along, even though a lot of the youngers guys in the bullpen are not gettin it done, its good to take ur lumps early

and CC looked awesome...I'm not worried about him, last year he started slow

I've never been worried about CC. You do get concerned when A-Rod says it's 50-50 he will need another hip surgery though.

this article is in the NY post today. I think it is right on and have thought this for the past few years. I'd take 9 paul o'neils / scott brosious any day of the week.

btw,....do we have ANYBODY in the minors to look out for in near future that can be an impact player? Just jackson??

How great was it to see Girardi go nuts on Gardenhire Fri night. Damn, that even got me going. I guess the team too. We needed a little of that. The dude was shakin! Gardner inside park homer helped too.

Hopefully, the boys can hang on to this one with no Mo in the 9th. Not Pettitte's best outing, but good enough if Coke finishes.

On a side note, I'm glad I drafted Morneau for my fantasy team this year. Big series for him this weekend.

    Yankees are awful...

a team in the toughest division in baseball over 500 is aweful

not to mention 7 wins in a row. The players said it themselves they are capable of going on runs like this. Baseball is not football. don't be so quick to judge a team based on one, two or even 5 games.

It is a season. they play 162 not 16
