To liven things up, what was this 'god's' design for the majority of the worlds population who either a) believe in naother god, or 2) none at all?

Are the Chinese, Indian, Moslem, Sikh, Buddhists, Satanists et al, all doomed, or merely mistaken?

What Im asking is, are the majority wrong?

    No, the Buddhists are right.

That's not a religion. That's the first place they're right.

...i believe what you see is what you get, specifically.

on a related note, i think it's pretty arrogant for anyone to say what they believe is fact. like the thread starter here "pitying" us poor atheists...smacks of hubris.

I agree that condescension is the "sin" in this thread.

You say:"i believe what you see is what you get, specifically."

You are saying that what we "get" is dependant on what we see!. What we "get" would therefore be a product of our own inner filters and the degree to which we can "see". As we grow and expand and learn to cleanse our filters, we will see more and more, correct?

I'm thrilled to SEE in my personal experience a sense of heaven on earth. I'm thrilled to use my eyes to lead me to create beautifully, responsibly, and aligned with natural life forces of life. It is so amazing to ENVISION and subsequently live a karma free existence by operating within an ethical standard that respects others as I wish to be respected. It's amazing to use my VISION, my inSIGHT and foreSIGHT to create all kinds of circumstances in my life that are about channeling my higher ideals into achievement and personally fulfilling accomplishment. It's amazing to paint my life with the vibrant colours of meaning, which allow the transcendant nature of Love to flow through me! I love to SEE the power of forgiveness in freeing myself from past hurts. I love to VIEW the unity of all life and all experiences, I'm thrilled to be able to use my IMAGE-MAKING facilities to IMAGINE my connection with others and to experience diversity and the myriad glory of life reflecting around me in each moment. Thank God, for the power of vision in creating what I "Get"!

ok, well if you see god, please snap a photo for us, ok?

you are projecting god onto what you see. that's fine. whatever floats yer boat.

Okay, lets go back to what you said: "i believe what you see is what you get, specifically."

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I respect exactly what you see, and I recognise that you are projecting that onto reality.

Do you recognise that for yourself--that you do the same? Do you realise that your perceptions, too, create what you see as real? Or do you merely project that onto me?

i realize you're confusing the fuck out of me right now. look, i'm not projecting anything onto reality...i'm accepting reality for what it is. at face value. i'm not examining who or what created the reality i see. i've gone through that examination, the search for the truth, and i've come to the conclusion that there is no creator. call me a follower of science, whatever, i just don't feel that there is a god. when you die yer dead. that sort of thing. now, if you want to believe, and you actually feel the spirit, more power to you. but if you are actually seeing god out there, may i suggest some medication?

I acknowledge that you are feeling confused.
look, i'm not projecting anything onto reality...i'm accepting reality for what it is. at face value.
If you are truly accepting reality at face value, does that mean you are factoring in your inner brain filters that interpret the reality you see?

If you notice that I am "projecting", and yet you don't own that your own impressions and interpretations are also "projecting" as per your own inner filters, there is a fundamental difference between your view and my view.

In my view, I am conscious of my own projections onto reality. It sounds like in your view, you are unconscious of your projections onto reality.

  • ok, what exactly are these filter, are they different from your filter, and how do i have control over these filters?

if i look at a blank sheet of white copier paper, and you look at that same sheet of paper, are we seeing two different things? huh?
You (representing atheists) have a filter over the possibility that others see of things/realms/dimensions/whatever existing beyond our world. Call it whatever you will.

Her filter (representing religious folk) is filtering out anything that doesn't agree with their sense of "religion" or "spirituality", which is why we have so many religious wars.. it's not important that someone has a belief, it's important that everyone have your beliefs.

I'm not trying to back you into one of those "pushing your beliefs on me" corners, but in a nutshell that's the way things generally are.

I used to be very, very pious, almost fanatical at times I think and my best friends are people who I met through church. No I don't believe in God anymore, and I think for a variety of reasons. I think I began to realise that the church was playing on mostly emotional appeals and found it to be a bit manipulative to the point where I began to question what was real and was was merely emotional manipulation to convince me that I was filled with the "spirit".

Secondly as I got older I started to question things like the rationality and accuracy of the bible. I also learned much more about science and the more I learned at school, the more things made sense to me. I wasn't necessarily abandoning God at this point, but I found I had no answers from the bible or from the church, except I had to have faith, but nothing was given to ground me in it.

I really wish I could believe in a God, but I can't and won't just so I can deceive myself in believing something I really don't. this probably doesn't make much sense to you, but it does to me. I guess I'm a skeptic and science provides me with more answers than God.
I really appreciate this post. It's a lot like I've been feeling and makes a lot of sense to me.

Honestly, I wish that God would disappear from everybody's consciousness and reliance. It would make the world a much simpler place I think, however that said, I have a lot of respect for the church. I cringe at the thought of what would happen if overnight the church would disappear. The church picks up the bulk of charitable drives, soup kitchens, and society needs the church right now if the gov't or atheists won't pick up the slack.

I think one thing that bugged me was that even if I were to accept Jesus as son of God, I think of him as vengeful like the God of the Old Testament, and I'm not cool with that. Although his message was love, and that he loved all of us, I can't imagine why he would still send us to eternal hell if we didn't believe even if we were good humans.
Great post, and I agree. I personally have no ill feelings toward any church because they do amazing things for communities. That, however, doesn't make them true.

One thing I've struggled with is the atonement. I've been taught that in order for God to be merciful and just, someone would have to pay for our sins, hence the atonement. Maybe someone should ask Jesus if God is just because that seems like a terrible injustice to me. And if God is all-powerful then why couldn't he just forgive the repentant? Why would he have to seek blood for sins? I've always struggled with the idea of a loving but seemingly vengeful God. The two characteristics seem quite contrary to me.
