Well tonight I was at my sisters for dinner and she says are you guys ready for a woman president me & my wife say yes she turns to her husband and says you see three against one! That’s the moment I realized my brother in law is a MAGA idiot the convo got heated we ate I said goodbye to her he was in the living room and we didn’t say anything to each other plus my brother is also a MAGA idiot, so in one fell swoop I will no longer socialize with them I’m totally ok with this!
    😂😂😂😂

It’s funny your politics bro rips people apart with his hateful rhetoric ?
There’s nothing funny about friends and family ripped apart by something as dumb as politics. I’m sorry, I could never not speak to family because of which clown show they vote for. Life is too short…. Fuck that.
What if they make normal conversation impossible? What if that brother in law had said to you "the only reason Obama was elected was because of all the niggers"? Would that change your attitude?
I don’t know anyone like that. No republicans that I know speak like that. That type of person sounds like someone I wouldn’t have liked in the first place. You don’t become like that over the course of one election.
    You don’t know enough republicans.

It was my mistake to let politics trigger me at their home I should have know better not sure I can patch up this situation! My sister called me this morning and told me I’m dead to them even though she’s the one who brought up politics in her house, I could of handled it better but it’s done at some point I’ll try to reach out to them and see if they are willing to forgive my mistake! For now I’ll let the temperature cool down.
Let me get this straight - she brought it up, said it's 3 against 1 (two I assume you and your wife, 3 being your sister, and the remainder your brother in law), and now she calls to say you're dead to her?

Yep that’s how it got started but at this point the finger pointing has to stop! I tried to apologize but she ended hanging up on me, I was wrong I should be better than this my behavior was childish and now I’ll have to mend the relationship it’ll take time and if they decide that I am dead to them I’ll have to accept that and move on!

It still happens to me as well. My BIL tends to not be around when we visit which is fine. He is the one that just can't resist a jab...the last time we were together is when he made some stupid comment out of the blue that Biden was outlawing individually wrapped cheese slices as if he was losing a constitutional right. I try to brush off those comments as much as possible. My SIL is good at just leaving politics out of the conversation. But as soon as politics comes up she says the most ridiculous shit you've ever heard.

I just realized they blurred out Trumps name in the title.  He's not like Beetlejuice and u say it three times he pops up, lol.  It's ok to print his name, I promise. Trump, see?  Oh and eBay.  You can write that too.  It's ok.  It's ok.
In the thread title? I did that on purpose.
Yeah why? Trump Trump Trump bawahahahaah!
  • Some updates:

    - I've seen the congressman cousin and the T*ump cousin (her daughter) multiple times over the past few months. They made jokes about me not talking to them anymore, I responded by joking that I'd talk to them if they got me Alina Habba's phone number. We didn't discuss politics after that, except that the younger cousin, who works for Habba, loves her job.

    - They were all at the MSG rally, in a suite.

    - The older cousin is posting on social media about voting Republican, and about how if you stop talking to someone because of how they vote, you're part of the problem, and it's all about respecting differences of opinion. Another cousin said virtually the same thing.

I really want to unload on them. Trying hard not to. Differences of opinion went out the window a looooooooong time ago. And again, I like to think they're smart enough to know that. Maybe they're not. Maybe I've given them too much credit, or I've thought too highly of them.

I go back and forth between dropping all of them. I love them all dearly. These cousins, and some of the others, are like brothers and sisters to me. Don't know what to do about it. Am I over-reacting?

I'd also love to get off social media in general. It's poison, evil, does more harm than good. Maybe I just follow my favorite bands and sports teams lol, although if he wins, I might get off it in totality, because I don't even want to think about how much worse it will get.

I voted last weekend, and got in and out quickly, but even in a sleepy little village 39 miles north of Manhattan, I was expecting the worst: people trying to disrupt the process, protesting, you name it. Thankfully, there was absolutely none of that. Nevertheless, I am fearful for immediate future.

May your days be long, til kingdom come.

I'd have a brief conversation, IN PERSON, about how you'd love to put it behind all of you, but you have one simple requirement: absolutely no political talk. No blaming. No this or that. Just "bury the hatchet", and talking politics would be considered digging up that hatchet again (even "jokes"). Just a thought.

But isn't social media "poison" because of them? Constantly posting fake shit and accepting it as gospel? Constantly being outraged about stupid shit that they were silent about when the orange fuckface was in office?

I agree that it's poison. It's a fucking cesspool of maga bullshit. Even innocent neighborhood pages get taken over by magamorons with dumbass comments on posts that have nothing to do with politics.

The right wing industry is outrage and all of these social media platforms feed it.

And yes I am aware that left wingers can post fake bullshit as well but it is nowhere near what the magats come up with based on what I see.

    Some updates:

I beg to differ. They will be plenty like him to come, that's one of the dangers of Trumpism. We have his mini me right here in Florida in DeSantis.  I guarantee you he will run again and again. DeSantis wants so BADLY to become President.  Trumps political behavior has opened the door for others to follow with the anything goes behavior/talk.

There's no point in arguing on the internet with people who are MAGA.  By now, what's the point?  No one is going to change their mind.  And if anyone is still "undecided", they are bigger problems than they realize.

Does this also apply if e.g. your friend or family is a neo nazi? Or a serial rapist?

And are you saying that e.g. Bernie Sanders's fight for public healthcare is not about caring about the people who would benefit by it, he just cares about the vote?

Looking for the boundries for what "family and friends über alles" entails, yes.

You getting all riled up when someone mentions that family and friends could be nazis or rapists? Weird.

Yeah sounds good but my brother in law is a magat and told me that Obama wouldn't have been elected "except for all of the niggers"... Does that change the equation?

My parents, especially my dad loves him. I live 15 minutes from them and only see them 5 or 6 times a year at this point. It’s sad they’re missing out on their granddaughters but they also voted against their rights so fuck them. I have no friends that voted for him.
This show, another show, a show here and a show there.
  • I can't not talk to people because they voted for him, but it's unacceptable to me. Having a lot of trouble with it. Is anyone else?

My brother, and my best friend on Earth and everywhere else (the mother of my Goddaughters), voted for Harris.

Almost everyone else of consequence in my orbit, family and friends, voted for him.

That includes my best friend from college, who I go to Vegas with every year, who I've taken to see the band twice. He is what I would have considered a traditional Republican. His exact words:

"Out of respect for you, I chose not to discuss it over the last several months."

Insulted that he doesn't think we can/could've had a respectful, adult discussion about it, but maybe I should have seen it coming over the past year, when I'd bring up something ridiculous that MTG or Boebert said, and he'd claim to not know who they were, or something that DeSantis did (he lives in Fl), and he'd play dumb.

I deleted literally everyone from my social media. Just following bands at the moment. Maybe I'll deactivate it at some point, maybe I'll just keep it super, super limited.

I made a strong effort to make amends with my brother in law and brother by apologizing for my rude behavior towards their choice to vote for him! I spoke to my brothers ex wife and she’s an immigrant she and her daughter voted for him! He literally went down to Chile and married her and brought her up here to NY! Last time I saw them they all acted really rude towards my wife like just a head nod as hello! I’m done with them I’ll keep it cordial but there’s no having Xmas or thanksgiving dinner with them!
jesus greets me looks just like me ....
