Family/friends that are Tr*mp supporters?

There’s no one in my life who’s consumed by politics. It’s a conversation that never comes up. And I couldn’t be happier. It’s literally the most divisive thing. Even religions have more than two options. Both sides intent is to make you despise the other so much that it motivates you to go vote. I’m good on all that. Life is too short.Gern Blansten said:

Sorry to hear that. But like I said, the thread says Trump supporters. I don’t know anyone who turned into that kind of person in 2016, luckily. People who speak like that were already like that imo.Gern Blansten said:
My brother in law said that to me...I was giving you an example as to why someone might not want to speak to a family member.nicknyr15 said:
I don’t know anyone like that. No republicans that I know speak like that. That type of person sounds like someone I wouldn’t have liked in the first place. You don’t become like that over the course of one election.Gern Blansten said:
What if they make normal conversation impossible? What if that brother in law had said to you "the only reason Obama was elected was because of all the niggers"? Would that change your attitude?nicknyr15 said:

There is a big difference between people who are misinformed but are generally decent people, and people who are unstable or racist or nihilistic or selfish, narcissistic, etc.In the case of this particular candidate, the cruelty is the point and he has emboldened too many of his followers to be their worst selves. I never liked holiday get-togethers where racist jokes were the prime diversion. I ditched people who screamed -- literally, screamed, red faced, veins bulging, spittle flying -- about Benghazi or Obama's birth certificate; having a conversation is impossible in that situation. The people I no longer speak to just weren't good people in very basic ways. That's hardly the same as "they don't share my views, so to hell with them."

Yeah he gives his supporters ammo to bring out the worst in themselves. Racism being the top characteristic.curmudgeoness said:nicknyr15 said:

I just realized they blurred out Trumps name in the title. He's not like Beetlejuice and u say it three times he pops up, lol. It's ok to print his name, I promise. Trump, see? Oh and eBay. You can write that too. It's ok. It's ok.0

People do that so it doesn’t show up in google searches. Xtian is the new way for atheists to write “christian”, for example. People on Twitter have stopped using the words “died” or “death” and switched to “ unalived” for some strange reason I’m still not clear on.tempo_n_groove said:I just realized they blurred out Trumps name in the title. It was my mistake to let politics trigger me at their home I should have know better not sure I can patch up this situation! My sister called me this morning and told me I’m dead to them even though she’s the one who brought up politics in her house, I could of handled it better but it’s done at some point I’ll try to reach out to them and see if they are willing to forgive my mistake! It doesn't even have to be as extreme as the example Gern cited.
I have a family member on my wife's side that blames almost every problem in her life on the immigrants. It's racist because she's definitely not talking about the European immigrants and it's nauseating. She never did this before trump
I agree with you that we need to live peacefully with people on the other side, but in some cases it is extremely difficult, and Trump magnified a problem that before him was easy to sweep under the rug0 -

I feel awful confessing this but I can’t be around my MIA anymore. She’s 95, no dementia, pretty healthy for her age. Her use of the words boon, coon, etc. is unacceptable to me so I see her at large gatherings, say hello, then avoid further conversation. I really have no respect for elders who still behave this way when there’s no physical issues involved.nicknyr15 said:

I agree with Nicky - "i could never NOT speak to family because of which clown is in office"
As for the comments Gern is mentioning - yeah that would be an issue regardless and if you have ppl around you that are like that I would think all of us would remove ourselves from associating in the future.
These threads are tiring at how it's "if you vote republican you're a bad person" In general, people have to quit that narrative on both sides. It's exhausting. No party is 100% right...ever.
You're a die hard Pearl Jam fan right? Go listed to EV's speech on 9/11/22.

OMG that’s awful! I’m so sorry. If you eventually reach out and nothing changes don’t feel guilty moving forward. I just wouldn’t wait a whole lotta time. It gets easier and easier not to have to deal with that stuff in your life. Haven’t spoken to my brother in 23 years. Things change dramatically in a family when a child dies before the parents. But it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. He was ten years older and the exact opposite of who I am. I’m sure his life is less aggravating as well. We were both at fault. I still sneak talk to my SIL, nephews, nieces tho.josevolution said:It was my mistake to let politics trigger me at their home I should have know better not sure I can patch up this situation! Not necessary. You seem to agree with me that associating with someone who would say that should be avoided. Nicky had said that he could never disassociate with a family member...but that type of family member changes things doesn't it?PJ5a1 said:
And that could work the same way on the other side of the coin.Gern Blansten said:
My brother in law said that to me...I was giving you an example as to why someone might not want to speak to a family member. It doesn't have anything to do with who they vote for...it has everything to do with the type of person they are.nicknyr15 said:
I don’t know anyone like that. No republicans that I know speak like that. That type of person sounds like someone I wouldn’t have liked in the first place. You don’t become like that over the course of one election.Gern Blansten said:
What if they make normal conversation impossible? What if that brother in law had said to you "the only reason Obama was elected was because of all the niggers"? Would that change your attitude?nicknyr15 said:
There’s nothing funny about friends and family ripped apart by something as dumb as politics. I’m sorry, I could never not speak to family because of which clown show they vote for. Life is too short…. Fuck that.Lerxst1992 said:teskeinc said:

That’s the moment I realized my brother in law is a MAGA idiot the convo got heated we ate I said goodbye to her he was in the living room and we didn’t say anything to each other plus my brother is also a MAGA idiot, so in one fell swoop I will no longer socialize with them I’m totally ok with this! It’s funny your politics bro rips people apart with his hateful rhetoric ?
I agree with Nicky - "i could never NOT speak to family because of which clown is in office"
As for the comments Gern is mentioning - yeah that would be an issue regardless and if you have ppl around you that are like that I would think all of us would remove themselves from associated with in the future.
These threads are tiring at how it's "if you vote republican your a bad person" In general, people have to quit that narrative. It's exhausting.
