Well tonight I was at my sisters for dinner and she says are you guys ready for a woman president me & my wife say yes she turns to her husband and says you see three against one! That’s the moment I realized my brother in law is a MAGA idiot the convo got heated we ate I said goodbye to her he was in the living room and we didn’t say anything to each other plus my brother is also a MAGA idiot, so in one fell swoop I will no longer socialize with them I’m totally ok with this!

There’s nothing funny about friends and family ripped apart by something as dumb as politics. I’m sorry, I could never not speak to family because of which clown show they vote for. Life is too short…. Fuck that.

What if they make normal conversation impossible? What if that brother in law had said to you "the only reason Obama was elected was because of all the niggers"? Would that change your attitude?

I don’t know anyone like that. No republicans that I know speak like that. That type of person sounds like someone I wouldn’t have liked in the first place. You don’t become like that over the course of one election.

My brother in law said that to me...I was giving you an example as to why someone might not want to speak to a family member. It doesn't have anything to do with who they vote for...it has everything to do with the type of person they are.

This past weekend I came across something that made my heart a little sad.

20 years ago, my uncle's family welcomed triplets, after years of trying to conceive naturally and, ultimately, through IVF. The trio was born prematurely and spent their first 6mos in the hospital, and fortunately all made it through, now in their 3rd year of college.

My mom has a big family, and puts together a periodic family newsletter that everyone contributes to. My aunt put together a story of their first 3yrs, as they'd just started pre-school at that point (2007ish). One of the first paragraphs she wrote about how the trips were bringing all sorts of illnesses home, and "they were definitely going to get their flu shots early this year."

15 years later, we don't talk much any more. Aunt and uncle railed heavily against the covid vaccines, and now IVF. Uncle has renal amyloidosis, is on high-dose steroids and the wait list for a kidney transplant. Another aunt was an ER doc and tried talking to them about their folly, but some nuts you just can't crack.

It's the kids I worry about the most. Aunt tried to prevent them from going to the state university and isolate them in their rural 1000 person community, but two of them at least got out of her orbit and are getting an education.

Funny how the tables turn; I can precisely date when it happened. That's what a cult of personality does, and it never ends well for anyone - especially the personality themselves.

Sorry to hear that. But like I said, the thread says Trump supporters. I don’t know anyone who turned into that kind of person in 2016, luckily. People who speak like that were already like that imo.

The conversation came up because he is a massive tRump supporter. It relates.

I remember when Obama beat Romney for his second term. My BIL and SIL bet me that the economy would crash by the next Thanksgiving...of course it didn't but they had some excuse for that when I brought it up.

There’s no one in my life who’s consumed by politics. It’s a conversation that never comes up. And I couldn’t be happier. It’s literally the most divisive thing. Even religions have more than two options. Both sides intent is to make you despise the other so much that it motivates you to go vote. I’m good on all that. Life is too short.

Intentionally or unintentionally, You have made what I think is the key point. There is a big difference between people who are misinformed but are generally decent people, and people who are unstable or racist or nihilistic or selfish, narcissistic, etc.
In the case of this particular candidate, the cruelty is the point and he has emboldened too many of his followers to be their worst selves. I never liked holiday get-togethers where racist jokes were the prime diversion. I ditched people who screamed -- literally, screamed, red faced, veins bulging, spittle flying -- about Benghazi or Obama's birth certificate; having a conversation is impossible in that situation. The people I no longer speak to just weren't good people in very basic ways. That's hardly the same as "they don't share my views, so to hell with them."

All those who seek to destroy the liberties of a democratic nation ought to know that war is the surest and shortest means to accomplish it.

Yeah he gives his supporters ammo to bring out the worst in themselves. Racism being the top characteristic.

I just realized they blurred out Trumps name in the title.  He's not like Beetlejuice and u say it three times he pops up, lol.  It's ok to print his name, I promise. Trump, see?  Oh and eBay.  You can write that too.  It's ok.  It's ok.

People do that so it doesn’t show up in google searches. Xtian is the new way for atheists to write “christian”, for example. People on Twitter have stopped using the words “died” or “death” and switched to “ unalived” for some strange reason I’m still not clear on.

They do that on TikTok too...I assumed it was because TT searches for those terms but I don't think they do.

It was my mistake to let politics trigger me at their home I should have know better not sure I can patch up this situation! My sister called me this morning and told me I’m dead to them even though she’s the one who brought up politics in her house, I could of handled it better but it’s done at some point I’ll try to reach out to them and see if they are willing to forgive my mistake! For now I’ll let the temperature cool down.

It doesn't even have to be as extreme as the example Gern cited.

I have a family member on my wife's side that blames almost every problem in her life on the immigrants. It's racist because she's definitely not talking about the European immigrants and it's nauseating. She never did this before trump

I agree with you that we need to live peacefully with people on the other side, but in some cases it is extremely difficult, and Trump magnified a problem that before him was easy to sweep under the rug

For now I’ll let the temperature cool down.
yeah let it cool for a bit...once tRump is out of the picture it will go back to normal. He's a fucking orange anomaly.

Is there a distinction between Donald Trump supporters and people who still vote Republican in spite of Donald Trump?

yes...there are plenty of repubs that don't support tRump. My parents are in that group.

What about this guy?  Stay friends with him, or no?

    https://abcnews.go.com/US/arizona-man-guilty-threats-kill-fbi-agents-politicians/story?id=112852939

An Arizona man pleaded guilty to making threats against federal officials on Tuesday, having repeatedly urged fellow social media users to shoot FBI agents and attack politicians, authorities said.

    ...

Tomasi posted the graphic threats over a more than two-year period between May 2021 and November of 2023. primarily on the social media platform 'www.patriots.win', which describes itself as the “community of choice for President Donald J. Trump.”

I feel awful confessing this but I can’t be around my MIA anymore.  She’s 95, no dementia, pretty healthy for her age.  Her use of the words boon, coon, etc. is unacceptable to me so I see her at large gatherings, say hello, then avoid further conversation.  I really have no respect for elders who still behave this way when there’s no physical issues involved.

And that could work the same way on the other side of the coin.

I agree with Nicky - "i could never NOT speak to family because of which clown is in office"

As for the comments Gern is mentioning - yeah that would be an issue regardless and if you have ppl around you that are like that I would think all of us would remove ourselves from associating  in the future.

These threads are tiring at how it's "if you vote republican you're a bad person" In general, people have to quit that narrative on both sides. It's exhausting. No party is 100% right...ever.

You're a die hard Pearl Jam fan right? Go listed to EV's speech on 9/11/22.

OMG that’s awful!  I’m so sorry.  If you eventually reach out and nothing changes don’t feel guilty moving forward.  I just wouldn’t wait a whole lotta time.  It gets easier and easier not to have to deal with that stuff in your life.  Haven’t spoken to my brother in 23 years.  Things change dramatically in a family when a child dies before the parents.  But it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.  He was ten years older and the exact opposite of who I am.  I’m sure his life is less aggravating as well.  We were both at fault.  I still sneak talk to my SIL, nephews, nieces tho.

Not necessary. You seem to agree with me that associating with someone who would say that should be avoided. Nicky had said that he could never disassociate with a family member...but that type of family member changes things doesn't it?
