I would take any arena or stadium within an 8 hour flight over the Sphere.
Same. Would be an easy pass for me…
if I’m going all the way there, I’m going for a band that makes sense to play there. Those graphics are not sphere ready. Unless they look worse because they’ve been condensed on a smaller screen for the tours. Could list 50 bands I’d think make sense for the Sphere over PJ.
I would actually prefer to watch a recorded PJ concert at the Sphere, optimized for the screens.  It’s not a great live venue imho.
Different strokes for different folks. The GA experience I had for U2 was fantastic. One of the best reasons was even though I was at the front there weren’t amps and speakers firing right at you. The sound was crystal clear and superb without the loudness.

And since there's no derailing this thread (already derailed), what was the deal with Olé?  I'm sure there's a whole thread somewhere, but if someone could give an abbreviated version I would appreciate it.  That song was always a wtf for me.
Not sure why/what they were in the studio for but it was released as a precursor to a tour I think?? Perhaps a South American tour?

The 2013 SiriusXM Town Hall Lightning Bolt release popped up on my app yesterday, so I re-listened to it.  One of the questions from the audience was "Where do you see yourselves in 10 years?".  Stone jumped in with "Not doing a Las Vegas residency".  I bet 12-13 years after he'll be fine with it :)

The $2+ Billion Sphere will eventually convince many big acts to do residencies to recoup the costs, whether the actual band members want to do it or not.

it was released just prior to the 2011 Canadian tour, and then they went to SA after that. Played a bunch of times on both legs.

Good note - as in 2011, didn’t they “try to get another record out quick” after Backspacer. First Lightning Bolt sessions were in 2011. Then reconvened in 2013

Yes! I think I read they had like 25 songs recorded for Avocado, and then got it down to 13. 2x4, Cold Confession, and Let it Ride being 3 of them.

totally agree with you!!! i did GA for U2 also.  Was one of the best LIVE concert experiences ive been to.  I'd love to see every band that i like give it a crack.  Some might hit, some might miss.. But it would be unforgettable either way.

I complete disagree.   The sphere had the best acoustics/sound I've ever hard at a concert.  It sounded amazing in there.  People thing about the visual, but that place is built for sound.   Most big concerts in North America are at Arena's and Stadiums and music events are the secondary function.   If the Sphere wasn't so far away, I'd see shows at the sphere over any Arena/Stadium shows.   There are some bars/theatre's and the Gorge that I like better, but only one of those is of comparable size.

100% That Holoplot system is incredible -- thousands of modules, completely steerable and independent rigs -- every speaker in the cab has its own amp. It is absolutely the cutting edge of live music. It puzzles me why people think the band, who are music nerds at heart, wouldn't want to experience that for themselves and the fans. I remember when Binaural came out and a lot of PJ fans were upset that the band had worked with Tchad Blake to use that technology...some people just don't like the experimentation I guess.

I know some people in the industry, including friends of mine, lament the environmental impact of it -- the power consumption needed to feed the system is substantial. And I think some may just not like the Vegas-ness of it all -- and I totally get that, Vegas isn't really my vibe either. But it really is an impressive innovation and I hope we get to experience our favorite band in that environment at least once.

I think most people associate the Sphere with the visual element more than the audio element, so that can drive who they think would be a fit to play it. We (myself included) are learning a lot more about the latter.

This is also a band that has had a punk ethos streak that extends to the fan base. While admirable in some ways it also tends toward grouchiness, rule-following, and minimalism. It's a contingent that will reflexively bristle when presented with something like the Sphere.

Ah, I think the power consumption answers a question I have.  I went to the First and Last U2 shows, amazing audio.  Then last NOV I went to Vegas for F1 and saw the V-U2 "Immersive Concert Film", audio was terrible.  They place a row of speaker stacks across the floor of where the stage would have been, and the audio seemed to just come from there instead of the 160,000 speakers in the ceiling.  Wondered why they did that.

Hopefully one good thing about this white elephant is local venues will spend to upgrade their sound systems, but…

It’s a carbon footprint disaster. It’s one thing for bands that have a huge following and decided they are about done touring, like new dead and the eagles. But for bands still touring, and this one that has challenges matching itinerary with routing with customer desire for shows, with visuals that are labor intensive and only usable at one location in the world, expecting fans to hop on a plane to a low population center, for a facility losing half a billion dollars a year, huge power consumption, all nutrition and hydration needing to be trucked into a dessert. Maybe it’s time they just say the whole liberal thing is just a fad and schedule the darn shows already!

I think the issue with this these days is that the tracks that didn't make a release were probably never actually finished as polished tracks like they were in the 90's when created for B sides etc, so most will remain demo's or recording studio cuts that were discarded when it was decided they wouldn't make the record. So in terms of releasable music that can be thrown together to create the b sides release version 2 there probably isnt a great deal of material in the finished format to throw out there.

I think a bit of mixing and mastering by a guy like Josh Evans (or B’OB) could turn a lot of that cache of “unpolished” songs into releasable tracks for a “Lost Dogs 2” compilation.

They realized that had achieved such a pinnacle of recorded music with "Olé" that it needed to stand alone. To surround it with other songs on an album that could only have been inferior to it would have been an injustice to those other songs.

Legend says someday the human species will be able to handle Ole and Can’t Deny Me on the same album…but the time is not now. Our minds would simply melt into a puddle of goo, too much power!
