A lot of times they don't live up to the hype as the hype is way too high.  To help your cause, in all seriousness, I don't think the difference between seeing PJ at MSG or Nashville (for example) is that much at this point.  Years ago when they were playing 33 songs, it could be a different story.  But even the 2008 shows, and 2016 shows, weren't all that special comparatively.  Quebec City 2016 blew MSG out of the water that year.

Granted, I've only seen four shows at MSG (2008 and 2016), and missed the legendary 2003 and 2010 shows.  But unless PJ starts playing 33 songs again vs. 23 songs, I'm not making any special effort to get to MSG.
The point is to make MSG easier for tickets by telling you all it’s overrated 🤣 . You answered your own question, you missed 1998, 2003, 2010, and 2022. You saw the bottom third of MSG shows. That said, the first night of 2016 has one of the best main sets I’ve ever seen…with a killer version of Whipping and Crown.

The only MSG shows I’ve missed are ‘98. It is the best arena to see any band, especially this band. If they played all of Vs. at MSG night 2 in 2016 instead of Greenville, you’d feel different.

Of the 52 shows I’ve seen in 14 states and 6 countries, there are 4 MSG shows in my top 10 with no bias as a New Yorker. 2022 was all about the crowd, and that’s not a bad thing!

I may be in the minority on this, but I thought Night 1 ‘08 @ MSG was incredible.

The entire point of my post was to help the locals be able to get tickets easier because I 100% believe that while MSG shows are likely to be more memorable, I don't think it is a big enough difference from other typical shows at this point in their touring cycle.

My point was that there is no guarantee that MSG will be one for the record books. It has better odds for sure, but there is more parity when only 23 songs are played and so going forward I especially don't think MSG is something to stress over about going to.  I've seen 117 shows and 4 of them were MSG.  Those four MSG would be in the bottom 30% of my list.  I never think about those shows when I think back.  Charlottesville 2013, Quebec City 2016, MOline 2014, Leeds 2014, Krakow 2018, etc... are all great examples that legendary shows can show up in random spots.

Honestly though, at 23 songs, I don't think we'll see any more legendary shows as you just can't compare to some of the shows in the past.  Maybe a club show like the Vic, or an album show, or special guests.  Unless they play a ton of rarities, you'll look at the setlist and find a show in 2013 or 2016 where they played those songs plus 10 more.
  • Chicago 2 2023
    FW 2 2023
    MSG 2022

All “epic” in my book, but yes with less songs they don’t top Krakow 2018, Gorge 2005, Philly 3 2009 or MSG 2003/2010 for me.

There are legendary shows from 1994-2000 that have the set lengths of 23-27 songs.

I ve Been to every msg show except 2022 (I had Covid).   Three of those shows from opening to closing song were legendary imo (night 2, 98, night one ‘03, and night 2, 2010).   The main set at 2016 night one was the best opening set I ve ever seen pj play however the encores were a bit of a let down.

the rest of the shows were great (night 2, 03, night 1, 2010) and some of them were even as my teenage sons say, just “mid”.   Yeah I m looking at you 2008 both nights and night two in 2016.

With that said, I think it s tough to pin point where legendary shows are going to be played.  Some people go with the small town shows (Penn state 03, Charlottesville 13, moline) and other people like traveling to the tried and true places (Chicago, Philly, Boston).

At this point in their careers all the shows are great but none are going to be legendary due to the new format with regard to setlists.  Just my humble .02 cents.
I'll ride the wave where it takes me......

You DMB fans should think about the show in Bend. That venue is relatively small, and Bend in late August is close to perfect in terms of weather and vibes.

Nice suggestion, but according to the rumors, i’ll be seeing PJ in Indy the day before, so no can do! I’ll be at Pine Knob and possibly Blossom for DMB though.

I think the real test will be seeing how many songs are played at Wrigley and Fenway for future hope of the occasional longer show.

They are great. I had a blast at FW 2 and Austin 2 in 2023.  And certainly there were legendary shows in the earlier years with short sets.   Old dogs, new tricks.  It's gonna be tough to eclipse the bar they set after 30 years.  The intensity of the early years is gone.   The marathon sets of the 2010's are gone.    Not saying these shows aren't awesome. I'll be trying to see 7 shows next year.

@a5pj - If I do that, then nobody will be able to keep up with tours for DMB, Foos festival dates, Extreme tours. Even more importantly, we won't all be able to accurately track exactly who is gutted!
Ha! Called that! Thanks for the tour dates today DMB.

100% Agree. Saw them at MSG, seen them in Chicago twice, went to PJ20. If I were to order my shows it is random city shows at the top. Ft. Worth, Nashville, Cincinnati, Miami, Kitchener. Throw a dart at a map and chances are I have fonder memories of that show than seeing them at MSG.

Agreed. I've seen eight PJ MSG shows, and I'm fascinated by the mythology that surrounds these shows. Per capita, Pearl Jam shows in San Diego and Phoenix that I've seen have been better than the ones at MSG.

That's a good question. Hopefully there's enough time to clean off the shit from the tour bus before we have to drive through.

Depends on what happens with Seattle being in flux. Otherwise I don't see any.
