  • I wonder if Ed knows that very few fans enjoy the sappy mushy songs. He probably doesn't care, but I get the impression Watt wants to get the band rocking and having less adult contemporary dad rock.

Also, hopefully no vedder "heeeeeeee heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"s to compensate for actual singing.

Love ya, Ed, but there's still some fire in your belly.

Let Mikey rip some solos, please.

  • With respect to the jaw movement thing people are talking about, that's the vocal affectation that I've mentioned a lot on this board that makes him add syllables to words by aspirating in the middle of them. Think of "low-hoe light

This . It may help him sing but the low hoe light example is perfect. It's awful. Along with eeeeeeee hheeee

I think 'the waiting drove me mah-had...' is the worst offender! That with the new extended bit in the middle of Corduroy makes me skip this every time on recent bootlegs.

  • Opera Man should just take over lead vocals at this point.

I wonder if Ed knows that some fans believe that very fans enjoy the "sappy mushy songs" when they historically are the ones that have connected with people and gotten airplay.

I personally love how the shows start now. The more slow, mid-tempo songs the better! I enjoy the rockers too, but I do prefer the slow stuff.
words seem so out of place.

EDIT: To be clear, I want Pearl Jam songs, whether they be fast or slow. The problem with "Just Breathe" and "The End," to the extent there is one, is that most of Pearl Jam doesn't do much on them. Save the solo songs for the solo records. (Although I think "Comes Then Goes" is just Ed and that song works well on Gigaton, so these are not hard and fast rules.)
I don't think a song of "a band" has to have everyone throwing everything at it. Every song doesn't need to have a guitar solo to fill up some "lead guitarist! quota etc.  The problem with The End is that it is banal. You can't deny the "power" of Just Breathe though, even with it being an Into the Wild-song repurposed into a Pearl Jam-number.

  • There are slow them there are lame live.
HTI . Oceans. Footsteps.of the girl all fit great into the nice slow start.

The end. Just breathe and some of the ed songs that should be his solo stuff don't work there.

To me? I think just breathe sounds like a country and Western song and I think lyrics are more my kind of lyrics on off he goes.

Ha!  Yeah, Pearl Jam fans are a funny bunch.  30+ years in, 11 albums... I'm thankful they haven't taken the AC/DC approach and become predictable.  I know not everybody is on board with Gigaton, but what I really enjoyed about that album is that it was different!  It didn't sound like the Brendan O'Brien-produced Backspacer / Lightning Bolt (I liked these two albums, thought they were well-produced, but they had a similar feel for me).  I thought Gigaton was very well produced and had a lot of moments unique to PJ on there.

Watt is a superfan... I think he can produce an album where, as Ed and Mike have said, he pushes them a bit and gets some great, energetic stuff on to a record.  It won't be 1992, however!  They're all around 60 years old.  Enjoy the ride.  Enjoy the change.

I do agree with a number of comments in this thread... people mentioned Ed's vocal mannerisms.  I do wish, pertaining to performing live, they would play to their strengths.  If that means losing a bunch of songs, so be it.  Do we want to see Ed trying to belt out "Blood" when he's 65 (a mere 6 years from now)??  He built up "Gods' Dice" in Chicago like it was going to be a great rarity that they were courageous enough to attempt... it sucked, he butchered the lyrics and a lot of fans think the song is mediocre anyways... let alone the casual fan... get rid of that shit.  If you're going to play 24 songs a night, I with they'd play 24 that they're still incredible at performing.

Just Breathe. it's not as evident in this song as others, but it was the one I found the fastest.

One thing about Gigaton, love it or hate it, they did things on that record they had never done before. Not every band does that after 30 years, I respect  the heck out of that.

What did they do? Base a song off a synth?

Spirtual Chaos clearly not feeling any positive things being said about Gigaton.  I think "DOTC", "Alright", "Seven O'Clock", "Buckle Up", "Retrograde", "Quick Escape" and "River Cross" were all pretty unique tracks compared to rest of the PJ catalog.  To each their own whether or not you did it or not.  I think it's a very solid album.  I guess I differ from a lot of people, I even enjoy "Buckle Up".  In comparison, I think Backspacer and Lightning Bolt broke very little new ground.

I agree, loved the sound of Seven O’Clock, Alright and the end of Retrograde. They’re all connected in my mind and I was hoping they’d stick with Josh to explore this further.
