Anyone else wondering where in the setlist this song will make sense? Opener?
    Somewhere in the 4-8 spot
hopefully on the cutting room floor...

After a dozen listens I gotta be honest... the lyrics make no sense, no connections to a theme or meaning...
just chanting nonsense and cliches... I guess it has a cool grove if you just learned how to play your instruments...or your drum machine.
I detect clear themes about the folly of presuming to know the future, and the trap of failing to learn from the past.

I also hear a commentary on gender politics and differences, with a nod to the #metoo movement.
yeh cause Ed's spent the last 7 years wearing a Pussy Hat, protesting with his wife and Watching Baseball...lol
Lyrics are very cliche and Ham Fisted like everything on Lightning Bolt...
Seems like you detest them more on principle than on their delivery.
They're my favorite band of all time but they've phoned in the last couple albums at the last minute, piecing together bits and pieces of demos that they all work on seperately and try to work into songs, and it comes off sounding like unfinished demos and b-sides.
What's weak is that Ed's preaching the same shit that we hear all day and night on TV, Movies, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram... I don't need to wait 7 years to hear what's being said every day, every where you look... maybe Lizzo will open up for them...lol
EV has been preaching since he wrote "Pro Choice" on his arm during MTV unplugged in 1992.  They have always been a political band. If you don't like it, don't listen to them.
yes they have, but Ed used to spend more than 10 minutes writing lyrics compared to the constant cliches he uses now... also I remember the MTV Unplugged show very well, because I was there... douche.
11 posts total, all of them so far used specifically to bash modern Ed and this specific song.  We get the gist, you aren't a fan of the tune lol

I made it through about 1/2 minute before moving on.   Sorry guys, but this sounds like a bad imitation of 80's new wave  with David Byrne with a scratchy throat. on vocals.
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
Variously credited to Mark Twain or Edward Abbey.

I love when bands take stands or sing about current events or fight for what’s right etc... In the 1960s political music was everywhere and it still holds up today. We need musicians to speak truth to power. Too many entertainers are just out to please everyone and make money. Not my thing. I hope this album is full of protest, rage, and clever lyrics.

I dislike the sound of this first track. It doesn’t sound real to me. Synth and drum machines aren’t my thing and have no true space around the instruments like a real drum in a real environment. This sounds like a plastic song to me.

I would’ve loved to hear more of Ed’s vocal range as well.

With respect to lyrics, it’s pretty cryptic. I think I can glean something from them but then again I don’t really know. It’s like reading tea leaves.

It’s art. I get it. Looking forward to the rest of the album and the show at MSG.

Can understand your points, but just so you know.... it's not a drum machine, it's "a real drum in a real environment".

You have the drummer that did Jesus Christ Pose.  This is like using Frank Thomas to bunt.

I think it is rather creative how this groove started off as a drum machine creation and Matt literally recreated the vibe with it purely with his own drumset and mixing choices in post.  Injecting a human element to an initial electronic creation, made to sound electronic.  That is pretty meta

To me real art is knowing when to pull back and lay down a groove.  Doing crazy fills and polyrhythmic stuff would not best service the song at hand.

yeh, and one of the greatest rhythm guitar players ever playing bass, greatest bass players playing keyboards, and greatest lead guitarist playing 3 notes over and over again... I think it was written yesterday, a few hours before release... 1st Take. LOL

First listen, I was like WTF. The intro sounds like porn music. After 3 listens, it is definitely growing on me.

I love the song. I had a drummer in a black metal band listen. He likes it. However he did say the drums are really a combination of little sensors on them that can really do almost anything when hooked to a computer. Even he has some and said that in concert it would be just a switch to get that sound.  So it is not technically a real environment.
Fyi,  I have met MFC and he kicks ass!

Your join date for 10C is 1998, I just think that is a shame that it takes hating a song to get certain people to become contributing posters.  And to further that, trolling as if 1998 was the birth date not the join date

The song is OK,  If they wanted to go this route they should have done it in the early 2000's. The song is only a PJ song because of the man singing it. You could have had the lead singer of AHA do it and it would sound like everything from the early to mid 80's. If you want to be creative make something fresh and new,  don't rehash something from 35 years ago.  At this point, stick to what you do, blister through it and tear the roof off the place.  I would have preferred if they went back to Ten and came full circle.  So lets see what the rest of the album has to offer.  So far in my book not a good start.  When I heard Mind Your Manners,  I thought they would have gone the full circle but the album was more pop/country/melodic.

I can see this song getting remixed for the clubs,  than it may have something.  In its current iteration.  Some bland 80's tune.

  • So, a question I get a lot about Pearl Jam is about their relevance in 2020. Well, I played the new song to my 11th grade Econ class. When it was over students were visibly excited, chatting about the song, and one student called out who was that? I said, I’m so glad you asked. That’s Pearl Jam’s new song.

i asked the class what they thought and overwhelmingly they thought it was great. One student later said they already added it on iTunes.

So, yea, they’re still fucking relevant! I was really happy they dug it.

(On a side note, I’m willing to admit they may have feigned excitement to get softer grading over the next week or so...)

@brianlux you need to give it a chance brother.  I thought I was gonna hate it after the first listen.  It has gotten better and better each listen and Im loving it now.

Up here so high I start to shake, Up here so high the sky I scrape, I've no fear but for falling down, So look out below I am falling now, Falling down,...not staying down, Could’ve held me up, rather tear me down, Drown in the river
  • How long can you argue about whether you like a song or not. 😂. In my entire life no one has ever talked me into liking music I don’t like or talked me out of liking music I did like.
There is not a single artist I can think of that I like every song they have released.  Not one. (Ok maybe the Sex Pistols but it’s only 1 album 😂)

Agreed. I listened to it on my phone at 6:30 am and thought ok... it’s good but wasn’t blown away.
Then it came on PJ Radio on Sirius as I was driving to a jobsite and cranked it... much better. I’m sure it will sound great on the turntable and live👍🤙

Cue the scene from A Charlie Brown Christmas where Charlie Brown is at Lucy's counseling booth and she keeps blathering on until he finally has had enough and yells, "That's it!" and she flies out of her chair backwards. You've made your point, let it go. Not sure what your goal is here besides trying to be a jackass at this point.

This is getting such a positive response. Happy for the band. Even people that aren’t into it seem to appreciate the fact that they’re at least trying something totally new.
when i first heard it, i was nervous coming here. i figured there'd be about 14 closed threads about how the band is done and the song is utter garbage. you're right, it's a very positive response, and i'm glad my assumption was incorrect.
You should have burned that assumption ;)

Also, if you're giving up after 30 seconds ... it's really at about the 2-minute mark where Mike slides in with the Prince-sounding guitar that things really start to get good.

Full disclosure, this really isn't my style of music. I wasn't a huge fan of 80s new wave when it was new. Probably I would have pulled the plug 30 seconds in on any other band. I kept with it and have re-listened because it's these guys. And it's fine. It's not my favorite track they've ever done, but there are definitely things about it I like. I will enjoy hearing it performed live.
