I’ve been on this train since 91

this track only makes me happy.

Its light, poppy, crisp, snappy, you wanna move, the opening bass groove could go on forever in my head.

    🎵expecting perfection leaves a lot to ignore🎵

I was hearing "expecting perfection leaves a lot to endure" .  From what I've been reading it seems it's ignore.  Still like endure better.  Vedder - hit me up the next time you are writing.  I can add a word change here or there.

It seems, at least for some, that this is not for you ;)

I'm guessing those not so thrilled are either not TH or Bowie fans, or don't like their jam mixed with stardust and heads.

I love Bowie, TH and Radiohead is one of my absolute favorites.

In all those cases, the vocal fits perfect with the style. IMO the grizzly baritone we've come to love simply does not.

The guitar work at the beginning of DotC is very good. Other than that, the tune seems forced, the chorus is one  of the worst lyrics I have ever read and the last minute is total filler.
I think Ed's vocals fit very well here. One of the best parts. The chorus has bad lyrics? These lyrics are better than most of LB and BS and at least aren't cringe worthy IMO.

The only lyric I still don't know how to feel about is the "boys wanna grow their dicks and fix and fire things". I think Ed's delivery makes it work though. As for that last lyric, I've heard people say file instead of fire. Upon first listen I thought it was fire. Made more sense with the implication that men in power are all about how big their dick is, what they can fix and shooting things. File things doesn't fit.Do we know for sure if it's file or fire?
    It's a hopeless situation...

Excellent song after 5 listens. Love how people will complain about no new music in 7+ years and now we get something the band wanted to do plus enjoys ... and here come the complaints. I'm not one to always get behind everything thing they (for the record) .. However, the fact they are putting out NEW music and touring is great. Sorry to those who wanted it to sound like the hits but come on!

Some of us embrace Tool, a complex band with a complex sound.

Tool went in the direction of further exploring their sound in deep and meaningful ways. Some criticized that as a retread.

A lot of fans are misusing the word evolution with DotC. This is in no way a gradual departure. Its bold departure and not for everyone.

Finding it ironic that as I'm hearing more and more early PJ influence from up and coming artists, the band has decided to switch it up this much on us.

Surprisingly it is everything I feared but I love it.  This is not old music.  This is the current industry. Dance.  Everyone shifting to get younger people to listen.  I don’t think this will grab the young people but love that it is different for Pearl Jam.

    Beck, Killers, QOTSA, Weezer, etc....

Is that how PJ did it in 1990? Figured out what the pop people liked and modified their soulful music to that style?

Jeff Ament had this to say about the single:

"I can’t tell you how proud I am about this group of songs. As you know, we took our time and that benefited us taking more chances. 'Dance' was a perfect storm of experimentation and real collaboration, mixing up the instrumentation and building a great song, and Ed writing some of my favorite words yet, around Matt’s killer drum pattern. Did I mention Mike’s insane guitar part and that Stone is playing bass on this one? We’ve opened some new doors creatively and that’s exciting."

I find it interesting you reference Tool because I am a huge fan of their music and was not impressed with their recent release. It seemed like the same rehashed riffs they've been doing since Lateralus with less punch. To each their own.

I love this song ... but I'm not sure I want it to be Pearl Jam song ... not sure if that makes sense.  I love pizza and I love chinese food, but I don't want a chinese food pizza.

How is everyone creaming their pants over this Flock of Seagulls shit?
It has shades of You Are and Bushleaguer that I like, but that fucking synthesizer fucking ruins it.

    @northerndragon That's no synth, that's a guitar.

I'm really not liking this sound.  I get what they are going for, but for me, this is one of the few styles of music I truly detest.  This belongs in the 80's prog rock discount bin.  Hopefully this isn't an indication of the overall record.  Maybe they can salvage this one with an extended jam or something live.
I didn't care for it either. Its not going to be everyone's cup of tea. I think this will be the type of album where you either love it or you hate it.

Based on what they've said, the whole album is a departure.

I'm very hesitant to work very much to fight to get MSG tix. So good news for the fanbase.

Yep, the live shows are ruined now that they're going to play...... 3 songs (?) from the new album on top of the other 20something classic songs.

Love the song. Has a great Groove. First time I heard it, it sounded interesting but after 5 listens it clicks. Very impressed. Had no idea Stone is on bass and not Jeff.

"I know the girls wanna dance
    Fall away their circumstance
I know the boys wanna grow
Their dicks, and fix and file things"

    Great lyrics
Pretty sure it's FIRE things, not file things

I thought it was finer things.

Pretty sure they have never tried to fit in with current styles. It could be that they really like this sound and it reflects their musical tastes and influences. I think they put more genuine effort in to this song then the last few singles. This song has depth to it as well.

I haven't been surprised by a Pearl Jam song in a while. This thing is excellent. A song like Can't Deny Me - which I really dig live - is good, but it feels like something they can bang out in their sleep. I hope the whole album is weird.

God that is dire - MOR elevator muzak.

If  rest of the album is in this vein then it will be getting used as a coffee mug coaster.
If the rest of the album is in this vein then please feel free to send me your copy so instead of being used as a coaster, the amazing jams in it will be cherished and enjoyed ;)

Sorry - but sometimes the emperor is just naked.
Well in that case, maybe the emperor is naked because he is busy showing off his abs in 2020 by dancing with the clairvoyants

Pearl Jam ringing in the New Year in a big and strong way, this is the most stoked I have been for a new PJ album in a long while, I am loving this single so far
I can see why tickets went on sale before this was released ..

I've shared that thought about a zillion times this morning
That's about the stupidest statement to make. What does this one song have to do with ticket sales? Half of the fans on this forum don't want to hear anything post Yield anyway when they go to a concert. They'll play 27 other songs besides this one. You don't have to like it, but making asinine comments isn't necessary either.

It's a joke. And yes I've honestly had that funny thought as did the commenter I was responding to.

Do you want me to call your comments stupid and asinine, because personally attacking another fan on an opinion forum is stupid and asinine.

BTW I love Binaural, Riot Act, Bowie, TH and Radiohead if that matters.

Fuckin insane. This dude spends every minute on this forum , arguing with people , paragraphs at a time. Posting definitions ,  now doesn’t want to try fir an msg ticket because of the new single. Maybe should have saved time complaining about how low east coast odds would be and saying they shouldn’t have toured other places where odds were 99% until he heard the single.

Also, I get why someone wouldn't dig it. Different strokes, etc. By all means register your distaste or critique. But don't be one of these dudes crusading against it. Go listen to something else for a few days and let people enjoy themselves.

Interesting. 1st listen, 80's groove. Will the whole album be just like this - NO. Getting the impression,  with all the time spent, that Gigaton will be a variety of different musical types.  Last time they did that, No Code, produced the most well rounded album of them all. Bring on No Code part deuce.

There is a cultural bizarreness where women are allowed to use the d word and men cannot use the c word in America, but not in other English speaking countries. Me too taking over the world.

To have that lazy visual in a song chorus reminds me of LDR and if you really want to go there as an artist there's something that works very well...metaphor.
