Stone is the hip hop guy.

I don't have a record player so I can't listen to it but I do like the "Shattered" cover, which I heard on YouTube.

  • Stone is the hip hop guy. But that was in the early 90s. Hip hop is so common place not, it wouldn't surprise me if they all enjoy it to some degree.

But I suspect the real push back on this release is because many posters here don't really branch out in their musical tastes beyond some version of white dude with guitar music.

Your suspicions would be incorrect. I don't personally like hip hop, but many 10 club members do. A band who has paying members of their fan club have an obligation to deliver a product that the majority of their members will appreciate. This shouldn't be a vehicle for their own personal jollies.

Will we ever get a new original unreleased song again?

would be nice. this release is kind of a waste of valuable plastic. i hate to say it, but i could give a shit less about just about every holiday single i've received over the last 10+ years. but i guess i'm the sucker paying $40/year for this and some stickers. hate to bitch but this came to me suddenly. Part of the allure for Pearl Jam used to be to expect the unexpected. Now we just get rehashed crappy live performances that have been available on the internet for months or even years.

I'd like to see an original song on the Xmas single again too.

This is the big problem. In regards to the x-mas single, they're phoning it in. They're asking us to pay $10 dollars for yesterday's news.

Other ways to deliver a quality/interesting single without spending time in the studio:
Have other bands do studio covers of Pearl Jam songs - If POS did a studio cover of Why Go people wouldn't be complaining compared to 99 Problems.
Release a B-side - We haven't heard one of these since Riot Act
Release a Demo that varies greatly from the final product
Backstage before or after a show the band could set up a 4 track recorder backstage and so some one-off cover or improv.
    Do a Ramblings

And/or: re-record all the Bad Radio stuff.

Incidentally, I don't mind a good bit of hip hop/rap; I just don't think Jay Z is very good at it.

Just listened to the download of "99 Problems". The bass line of "WMA" doesn't help it—it only makes the bass line sound annoying.

yeah, i get the feeling that PJ just doesn't care about the holiday single anymore. Its almost like the band and the Ten Club aren't even one in the same. I'm sure that isn't really the case, but would be so hard to give us just a little something fresh and new? I know I'm being critical, but I'm also one of the biggest supporters of this band. I won't get into how much money i've poured into this band over the years. Thats my own choice. But, I just expect more from these guys. I know if Eddie or any of the band members were reading this, things might be different in the future. Thats all I'm asking for. a little change.

Just listened to 99 Problems for the first time now and... I'm not gonna do this again. The bass line? Yeah... well :)
Shattered? It is quite funny and cute when I watch a video of it. When I only listen to it... I don't quite get it.

I didn't get it in the mail yet but I'm not really waiting for it now. Let's just hope next year's single will be... something we'll all like :)

I didn't say all or most 10Cers don't like hip-hop, I said some and then you go on to prove my point. And I'm guessing many of those complaining about this 7" don't like it.

But I don't think the band has the obligation to give you what you want. I don't think these singles have always done that. I don't think either of these songs are throwaways like a Ramblings would be. This is just supposed to be a nice gift, a keep sake from the band, not the the next great single that people start threads requesting.

People have been asking for MIA, this A side proves a recording was done and its possible it could be released in the future. This is a great taster.
  • Having been at MIA and still holding out hope for a boot, 99 Problems was cool to see on the release. I won't listen to it too often though, at the end of the day I don't think it's a very good version of the song. I don't hate Jay Z or hip hop, I just don't think this is a great recording. (the Cypress Hill collaboration was WAY better IMHO) It was fun to see 99 live, but it was 1000 times better when it was preceded by WMA and they played the songs back to back. Like many have already said here, the single would be infinitely better if they had both tunes on it.

Shattered was meh. I probably will never listen to it again.

Bottom line for me, the Christmas single isn't the reason I'm in the 10c. Maybe the other stuff I get doesn't justify the extra $20 a year for the Analog membership, but I still like getting the physical magazine if nothing else.

People have a right to their opinions, especially in a thread titled 'Opinions'.

i agree with you,and i think almost every year at one show they playing a improv,,
now, what we saw here.1st they didnt add anything from wrigley or london 13..means they will do something with that
second, they put a song from the festival, they didnt release as bootleg, seems we wil not get anything from that show..
again, eddie solo work, not other band memebrs..is like the tickets, they dont selll 10c tickets to any side project, only to eddie shows..
as for B-sides,maybe in the future will make a new lost dogs???
im pretty sure they have so many7 recordings at their practice space, and many gems we will never see the light

    This.

And even if people on a Pearl Jam message board don't like hip hop, so what? I can make the same argument and denigrate lack of musical taste if someone doesn't like eastern Ghazal music.

Here's my thought on what would have been a better song combo for this year's xmas single, just to keep with the collaborative theme they had going this year:

Side A: Comfortably Numb from the 12-12-12 benefit concert

Side B: 99 Problems with Jay-Z (with the full W.M.A)

I understand that Jay-Z is relevant in the current music scene. I don't have a problem with that. But make that the B-side to the chilling version of Comfortably Numb with Roger Waters from 12-12-12.

He doesn't mean copyrights to the song. This particular performance might be copyrighted because it was released on a Benefit CD for Sandy Relief.

The decision maker on this one has some explaining to do. Worst Christmas vinyl they've ever released.

  • I'm so disgusted I have to have anything with Jay-Z in my collection or even in my home for that matter. He is just the epitome of greed & capitalism. Didn't he retire?? You can't understand a thing he's saying/rapping except for the chorus...

What's next year's Xmas single gonna be? A selection from his wife's "accidental" $1 million payday concert for Muammar Gaddafi??

Again, the past several X-Mas singles have sucked, another reason to go digital.
And so you see, I have come to doubt

Yes, they have sucked hard. But they don't have to! Please pearl jam, make this right next year!
